  • Dad woke up OK. I went on a Walk and when I got back, Danielle said he was having a really hard time. This is my attempt to calm and reassure him.

It doesn’t happen to this degree every single day with Ed. My mom is 92 as well and with dementia. She lives with me. They do have hard days, mostly hard hours as those moments pass. Dan is handling it in the most loving and clear way a caregiver could. This disease is the cruelest. Side note; My mom LOVES watching Dr Salinger. She commented one day, “ he makes me feel ok and not so alone in this.” :’) God bless us all.

@@robincosta7247 Robin, I’m so deeply sorry, and I apologize as this is going to be a very very long reply.
Your simple sentence hit incredibly hard, “seeing her empty room“ 😔 Sending you the strongest of comforting hugs.
All too soon, I will be where you’re standing right now. We caregivers run so ragged every day and night, I can only imagine what a horribly sad, disorienting and abrupt stop that feels like. I wish I could find the proper words instead of rambling…
As your weary mind, body and soul begin the journey of healing, may you only remember the person she was before that cruel disease; Brilliant, the sharpest of minds, her laughter and the strong, confident person she was.
She’s free and she’s whole again.
And now, as you’re slowly finding your new normal, your broken pieces will come back together and you’ll live again. She wants this for you and for all your family.
God bless you, heal you, and breathe new life into you. ❤️‍🩹💐✨

Dan you know food is a way that Ed keeps account of his daily routine. That’s a sense of security to him. So always reassuring him of when he will have his next meal is a good way to keep him grounded. Lots of decaf in front of the tv when there are no other plans for the day. My mother always loved the gossip magazines about the stars….so I always indulged her with tons of them. (We even buried her with some under her pillow.) Take whatever his interests are and provide him with something to look at, like car magazines, etc. TV is so progressive today, he can be exposed to so many cultures and things he may enjoy. You and Danielle are doing a wonderful job with Pop, that so many other grown adult children could only wish to live up to with their aging parents. Great job to the both of you, and much love to Pop!❤

In my experience people with dementia or alzheimer's do not like taking showers. Grandpa Ed has tried to get out of taking a shower many times in these video's. Also other channels on elderly parents/grandparents show similar issues. Sometimes they are afraid of the water, other times it is modesty issue, many reasons. This is easy to search. I am going to assume that you may be a general practitioner, not a certified dementia practitioner. Dan and Danielle have been Ed's care giver for years now. Believe me they, and other caregivers, would have their loved one looking like a wrinkled prune if a shower did all the things you have listed for the patient. Also, there is hardly anything works every time for dementia or alzheimer's patients. Dan and Danielle are doing a fantastic job!

No! Not a shower when he’s anxious already. There is no clear answer what to do for him at any given time. What worked yesterday, may not work today. Dan and Danielle are doing an awesome job! It’s tough sometimes!

@@slavasheynin486 You are so correct. I was trying to break it to the "practitioner" that he clearly is not. So off base it'd be funny but for the fact inexperienced care givers might believe this. They could cause all sorts of trust issues with their patient.

We all go through our own ups and downs Dan. That assurance, support, care and love you show and give him are sufficient. Sometimes we need a little push from our kins and that’s what exactly you are doing. Keep on keeping on the two of you, you are one of the most beautiful and amazing people I admire on social platforms. Blessings to you.

You are a wonderful son who is taking care of his father which is something most children no longer do in this day and age, they will stick them in a nursing home instead. Good bless you for all you are doing for your dad! ❤️❤️❤️👍😊
