I own one a Petrol AWD Torres (we have an AWD top of the line variant in Australia) and I had it for almost 3 weeks before I had to fill it up. The sports mode is fun and the handling is great with the AWD but it does chew up the petrol. I did get about 400km in before I filled up and I still had a bit over a quarter of a tank left so I haven't found the fuel efficiency too bad. I have really been enjoying it and for the price it has everything I need and use and would recommend it.
Putting Ssangyong’s EXDI 2.2 engine in the Torres would likely bleed sales away from the Rexton, so they are unlikely to do that anytime soon. I have a Y450 Rexton Ultimate fitted with a TDI tuning box and EVC throttle controller and it is an absolute beast to drive for a lot less money than anything comparable, so I am very pleased that I looked beyond the brand perception, as Ssangyong build very solid vehicles.
Hey Mark, ah that makes sense, appreciate you sharing that with us. The car was great, so much going on and great tech. It just was very inefficient and after a while it just gets a bit annoying constantly having to fill it up. There has to be some in between they could do to help the mpg. Sounds like you have sorted your self out with a decent ride then. Thanks for the comment and chatting to us 🤗
@ Sadly KGM Ssangyong doesn’t have the internal resources yet to offer a wide range of engine options in its vehicles, so I can’t see them being in a position to offer a smaller capacity diesel engine, which would make the Torres a very compelling package imho. I regularly get returns of high 7’s to low 8 litres per 100 km on a distance run in my Rexton (around 35MPG) which is pretty respectable for a large SUV I reckon.
The looks look fab, when I had it for a week I had the same with people stopping to ask questions. The economy is absolutely shocking, I struggled to get over 25mpg. As you mentioned a diesel would be perfect, or even the hyundai 1.6 turbo hybrid and the 8spd auto would fit super well too. I found on a long journey the seats were quite firm. Great review gents
Hey Eddie; thanks for the comment. So interesting to hear your views on it , as well as hearing you struggled with the mpg too! Thanks for chatting leaving us a comment. Hope to see you at an event soon 🤗
You are wrong on many fronts. First, Torres is unibody and built on the same platform as the smaller Korando. Second KGM/Ssangyong has its own 2.2 diesel which is pretty good - I don't know why they are not offering it. I also hear the 1.5L turbo is thirsty and I think it is because it is overworked. What I find fascinating is that Ssangyong does have a 2.0L which they can use and that would do a much better job with a lighter boost turbo. Your off-road test is pathetic - even a Vauxhall Corsa would pull that off!
