HISTORY OF THE COMMANDERY
Early History
Tradition has it that the building was founded as a hospital around 1085 by Saint Wulfstan, the then Bishop of Worcester. The hospital was built around a much earlier Saxon chapel dedicated to Saint Gudwal - which was located to the south of the present building.
Saint Wulfstan's hospital was a monastic institution located just outside the city walls beside the Sidbury gate. Here, at the junction of the main roads from London, Bath and Bristol, it could provide travellers with aid should they arrive after the closing of the gates at night.
The Construction of the Building
The Commandery has undergone many changes over the centuries, and is a complex patchwork of architectural styles as the structure was modified to suit the occupants of each period.
The original Saxon chapel was a substantial structure as suggested by the remnants of stone pillars used as decoration in The Commandery gardens. Saint Wulfstan's hospital assumed an 'H'-shape typical of its period, with the Great Hall forming the crossing point between two wings as it still does today.
The Great Hall
The Great Hall was, and still is, the principal room in the building, once functioning as a refectory for the monastic hospital. The hall shows many classic design features of a medieval open hall with moulded beams, curved timber braces and a fantastic hammerbeam ceiling. This type of ceiling is rarely found in timber-framed buildings - the weight usually requires brick-built walls, but The Commandery's is made of wattle and daub.
Light shines through the diamond-shaped panes of the fifteenth-century oriel window, which are painted with designs of birds, ears of wheat, and flowers.
The Painted Chamber
One of the most impressive surviving early rooms is the Painted Chamber once completely covered in medieval wall paintings dating from the fifteenth century. The Catholic paintings depicting various saints were covered with whitewash during the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII; ironically, this act protected them from damage and sunlight for the following centuries.
Discovered in 1935 by the Littlebury family, the paintings were conserved by Miss Matley-More of the Worcestershire Archaeological Society and fascinate The Commandery's visitors today
The Civil War
It was in the final battle of the war that The Commandery took a major role. On his way from Scotland to London, where he hoped to take the throne he believed was rightfully his, King Charles II arrived in Worcester.
He decided to make his stand here following the news that Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarian's army was quickly advancing. Fort Royal, which stood on the hill behind The Commandery, became one of the King's first lines of defence, and The Commandery itself was chosen as one of the headquarters for the Royalist army.
Unfortunately for Charles, it was the Battle of Worcester that proved to be the end of Royalist hopes, changing the governance of England forever.

Well done on the new intro 👏 like the history of the site as well.
Love it when Paranormal Teams go to beautiful buildings with history and they just don’t walk around Forests or woods because they don’t want to spend money. Nice one Mark and Paul X😊
How in the world did Paul keep a straight face with Mark wearing that crown? 😂😂😂
That's what I thought ! I was peeing myself 🤣
Absolutely great video guys. I love how you both investigate - calmly, quietly, with respect and don't jump to conclusions. Some definite activity there - paranormal ? not sure, but noises, taps etc. The location was gobsmacking. Am so proud of our UK history. This place was just awesome. Thanks for going out there guys and thanks to Haunted Houses Events too. Much appreciated xx
Thank you Tracey 😊 thanks for being such an awesome moderator 👍
I agree with Paul 🥰
Another belter lad's 👌 your channel just gets better and better 👏 thank you so much for all your hard work and time that goes into bringing us this fantastic channel
I always enjoy watching you both explore new locations. It's a big plus to learn about the history of a location before you get started. It must be relief to go into a place where you dont have to worry about falling through the floor or the roof caving in. Looking forward to the next one!
Paul, very serious, telling us the history...pans to Mark, very serious wearing the crown. 👑😂 That painted room...Stunning. Curious jingling. Thanks Haunted Houses!
Beautiful place with such rich history! Fortunate King Mark was there to assist😁
Enjoyed the historical intro, very atmospheric place, great crown!!!
Thanks for the awesome video, great location and investigation guys!! You did a great job again👍👍
Hello from Nova Scotia Canada 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
My local spook spot. Ive been banging on about The Worcester Commandery to The Oujia Brothers for years now.
(Its pronounced "Wooster" phonetically). The Cathedral is incredible too.
My buddy and I plan to spend some time on the fields where horses galloping and war cries can be heard at times. Weve been recently investing in some camera equipment to do so.
Stunning building! Loved the investigation. That jingling was strange. Thanks guy xx
Hey all! Watching from Georgia USA 👋
Brilliant! Nice one 👍 👍 👍
Tuning in from Bucknall, like the look of this location, steeped in history 😊
That crown .. Mark should wear that on all future investigations .. it give the whole channel a very regal air 🙂 The Commandery is a fascinating place which may or may not be haunted (as usual). Needless to say the investigation was carried out with your usual good humour (that crown, really ..) and with a logical and rational approach. As always keep up the good work.
Hello from Ohio USA. Love your show.

Great location. Enjoyed hearing the history of the building. It seemed like the noises become more strange the longer you were in there.💯
Hi Paul and Mark. Great investigation and stunning location you did get some noises through out the investigation brilliant really enjoyed it just for the history of the place ❤
Thank you Paul and Mark, wonderful investigation ✌🏼🍻. Lovely dress, too😁
I missed the premiere. I have had some unimaginable sadness in the last week. My lovely big brother passed away suddenly and I have been with family trying to make sense of things. I will probably pop in and out over the next while because watching you guys and talking nonsense in our wee community lightens the heart. ❤
So sorry for your loss 😔 sending love to you and your family at this sad time 🙏
So sorry to hear of your bereavement. Sending love and light.
Such a beautiful location to explore! The noises you guys captured were interesting and creepy. The atmosphere inside was thick with history. Thanks, Paul and Mark, for another genuine adventure!
Thanks!
Thank you so much Kristy 🙌 really appreciate it
Oddly enough, I'm looking into a gentleman called William Blythe, a Captain (Parliamentary forces) during the ECW of 1644. So this is of great interest to me. 👍
Very good video guys. Thank-you👍

Hello Paul and Mark, just wanted you to know that I really enjoyed your investigation, the venue was incredible you both seemed very relaxed, instead of being on the edge of your wits worrying about being interrupted. The Intro was professionally filmed and the narrators voice was brilliant. Well done Paul and Mark. Have a great week both of you
@31:33 I listened over and over and it sounded like a ceramic bell. I used to get them as wedding souvenirs.
looking forward to this awesome treat
Proper good one that! Such a great place, rich with history. I bet it was SO atmospheric. See you again for the next one, night guys!
Brilliant investigation lads! What an amazing place thank you 💙😍
Enjoyed this one, the building brought to mind Shibden Hall in Halifax, they do Ghost Hunts there too if you ever fancy coming to Yorkshire. I went a couple of years ago just to see the house it's about 30 miles from where I live, anyway I can't put my finger on it exactly, but there is definitely something there, certain areas just felt different like a change in the temperature and atmosphere and like you're being watched. Anyway keep up the fantastic work guys, no faking just real good old fashioned ghost hunting, love it! ♥
Looks like a brilliant location. Really looking forward to it. Thanks for getting out there guys, ❤
Another awesome video I heard the creaks our floors d that at our house especially when the weather changes the floors swell and release pressure we have wood floors
King Mark on his chaise longue Throne 😅😅😅
Excited to see this one. I've got a thing about the civil war 👍 👍 👍 👍
Same here👍
Fascinating period in our history
HI TY! Can't wait till next time. Take care!
Guys great episode, the place looks amazing and what I love is you talking about the history of a place, maybe go back and stay overnight 😱, the UK has some wonderful places and so much history, keep up the good work guys xx
Thank you Paul and Mark ... really enjoyed this ... I loved the olde cartoons on the walls taking the mickey.
I love this place! Used to live nearby and used to go there quite a bit. Lovely building, bit of a spooky atmosphere but was that just because it was very old?? Maybe I’ll find out by watching this video!
Definitely an interesting one guys especially the jingling as it didn't sound like the door handle. Could some of the creaks/taps be the floor settling? It always makes me think it's as if the spirits know there is recording going on and don't like doing anything on camera as a lot of things happen when no one is recording or you aren't really paying attention. Another good investigation though! Also is anyone else not getting notified of the videos as had no notification again tonight which is annoying.
Great investigation
Watching now, cool intro✌🏼🍻
What a beautiful place.
Thanks Mark and Paul another great paranormal investigation. Big up guys 🫶👍❤️💯
Will be watching tomorrow lads as always!
I've said it before; but when you have a channel that is legit in all they do and have ever done have something like the sound of jinglelling of keys or door handle occur with no explanation, it becomes more terrifying than anything you would ever see on any fake over the top channel and that happens becaues regardless if it really was paranormal or not; you know it was 100% real.
That's a whole other level of spooky. A real level.
Great and interesting content. I love it. 👍👍👍😍😍😍
Beautiful building, thanks to Paul and Mark for the tour ❤️ I believe a lot of paranormal activity is possibly residual, therefore it's a case of being there at the right time to catch it. I also believe that there are only some people able to see spirit, and if you don't have that gift, then you will never see an apparition. There are also those who claim to have caught activity 😂 for entertainment purposes and to get views. This is just my opinion. I love watching you both as I know anything you get is fact and not just for entertainment x
👏👏👏👏👏 well done guys
Another brilliant investigation, Paul and Mark. beautiful place and loved the history of the place too ❤️. Perfect intro, as always Paul. We see ya on the next one. Take care ☺️
I agree, it was very interesting. I never knew you guys had a civil war as well. Lol
Yeah. Sounded like keys to me too. Someone fiddling in their pockets or getting ready to use one on a keyring? Or ... coins? The second time? What an interesting place. Definitely something there. Can "feel" it from here. Nothing feels bad, but it wasn't wanting to "really" play. How frustrating. hahahaha. Oh Paul, that dress was really "you". 😆 Beautiful place, great investigation. Thanks, guys! 🧡
Nice Gents .. Looks interesting.. Looking forward to you eppy as always.. Thank you guys cheers :)
I think we can all agree, the hat was the main attraction of this episode.
Great crown mark.
I love to hear the history and the stories relating to the place. Mark did make me laugh when he appeared wearing a crown 😂. I heard a few knocks, but can't tell if it's paranormal or not.Amazing building boy's and always enjoy your content good or bad.😊 🥰 xx
Loved the video, and just loved that dress 👗 it was definitely you!😲😅
It did actually sound like keys? but the creeks i'm not so sure, very old building constantly making noise.
It's frustrating everything being so quiet but trust me one day you'll get the reward, it's very much real. 👍😊
Well done paul and king mark 👑 great video great place.👍
Doors open ,but no one in beautiful place tho .Many Thanks guys 😱
I like the way you do the way you do the investigations, you are polite and introduce youself. You is a visitor in their mind. I was living in a appartment in a very old house and in the appartment beliw me an elderly woman was living but she passed away and two weeks later I could see doors opening and drawers opening and closing. But I understood who it was and could even ask her to open the door for me. She died in her sleep and didn't know she was dead. I was the only person in the house she would talk to and she trusted me so I helped her to cross over. After that everything was back to normal. So don't loose your beliefe even if you don't find anything. It's only the fakers that gets things thrown after them by pulling strings and use gadgets that gives them false "positive" spirits. I use only an old digital recorder to se if I can get any EVP. NOT Panasonic DR 60. Greetings from Norway. (my mother was from the UK).
Love the new intro but Interesting history but the fellow at the start🤔but ya man this was an interesting investigation boys i like then noises and squeak and the jingle sound but boys keep up the honest investigation👍
King Mark it suits you!!
@29:23 there was a little mmm there. It sounded like a kid or maybe the wood flooring. Dunno. But creepy thru the 🎧
i feel there is no one there to answer your request
one day maybe
Should be an interesting explore boy's 😊 xx
Hey guys, immediately after one of you breathes at 21:26 there’s a man’s voice. You need headphones, it’s really clear!
Also, what was the noise and knock at 29:22?
No longer live 😞
YOO YOOOOOOOOOOO Trent Dudez👋🥸...
29:22
there is either a womans voice here or a childs voice an i think its saying "who" ... and immediatly after, there sounds like a knock..
it sounds like its in the room your in an not an EVP ...
42:38
LMFAOOO @ Marks calm response to that question... he thinks you're possessed now Paul... lmaooo 🤣🤣🤣🤣...
You know what that sounded like to me.. it sounded like a belt on one of those dresses...
and Mark ... not all cows have horns, you were supposed to say "why do Bulls wear bells"... lmaooo
ANYHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
see you GentsonTrent on the next one an stay safe out there..
Buh Bye from Central Canada 👋🤓
It would appear the spirits taken leave of absense gentlemen.
ANOTHER GREAT INVESTIGATION GUYS Not Much GOING ON. 👍👍👍👍😊
👍💯
Sorry me Again...hamilton room, great hall and second floor at the back is haunted
King Mark I
It's there day off
Nice one guys, Its not us, its you, if you wernt tru,e we would not follow you,
Thanks Paul & Mark! What a beautiful bldg & paintings. Maybe just stick to men’s clothes Paul, lol. You make a good looking man, but not so much as a woman (sorry for being honest, lol).❤
Your head a made for a crown 😂😂
At about 13.30 their was a moan
And.in the painted room nothing paranormal has been found
@GhostsOnTrent Would loved to have clearly heard the historians potted history at the beginning but the ridiculously loud music was drowning his delivery out !
It didn't drown it out. He was loud and clear. I know this because I spent 2 hours on the audio to get it right 👍
