I'm surprised no BJJ folks are on here saying that it won't work on the streets.

This is why when Westerners first observed Far Eastern martial arts in the early 20th century they described it as, "dirty fighting". This WW2 British combatives lesson no doubt derived directly from William E. Fairbairn's, "Defendu", whuch he described as, 'gutter fighting'. The proof this is Defendu came when the British officer instructor mentioned there are no blocks in the instruction, which is how Fairbairn characterized Defendu. It presumed you were the target of surprise attack. You had no time, no chance to block attacks.

I believe at least of those methods of "hog tying" will result in brain damage and coma (due to blood flow restriction) if left for too long. I happened here in Denmark to a young guy demonstrating in the 90's.

seems that submission techniques were not yet introduced from asian martial arts and jiujitsu. i have no idea exactly when the film was taken but wonder if it was around 1950s.

William Fairbairn was well versed in jujutsu and judo, having studied at the Kodokan. He, along with Sykes, Applegate, O'Neill, and others thought that grappling required far too long to teach well, and wasn't lethal enough in the free for all of cqb. The goal was to make the men lethal quickly, and to end all encounters quickly and decisively. Attack, and attack some more, as the film points out.
