@big_pb possibly, if it's a 3-loss team that lost their conference championship. I just can't find any logical way to put a 9-3 P4 team in over an 11-2 P4 team, regardless of conference, SOS, or whatever. If you can't even make it to your conference title game, you shouldn't be given a spot over a team who did. That's the whole concept of punishing teams for extra games, which is exactly what the committee said they wouldn't do, so SMU was in regardless. Love it or hate it, it still comes down to this: if you win your games, you're in. The teams that the committee chose helped set a good precedent: if you can win 10+ games and make your conference title, you're in. Even if you miss the conference title game, 10+ wins should get you close enough to make it, regardless of the conference. If you're a big-name program that's recruiting in the top 10 every year, that's honestly a low bar for the regular season, so if you can't even hit that, you shouldn't be rewarded for underachieving while other teams (like Indiana and SMU) are overachiveing.
So first we had split NCs due to having 3 "equal" teams but only 2 allowed in the BCS Game. We go to 4 team playoff and have issues of some conferences (SEC) feeling they should get more than one spot and leave other conferences out. So now we have a 12 team playoff to get to the NC game. This solves the issues of conference strength, leaving out a team that deserves/earned a spot, etc. So with this we get some teams in some years that are not competitive with the rest. We saw that wit the first round and may see more in the second round. If we want 'good bowl games" then we go back and not have clear Champions. Or just start watching when the field is down to 4 teams.
I think 12 is best every team should have control of their own destiny (of course the conferences could undo this due to a combination of mega sizing and bad scheduling, but I believe this is a different argument for a different comment). If teams are eliminated before the first snap of the season.... give me the Mythical Champions of years past and be just be honest about it.
@jefflane617 12 is a strange number to put into a bracket, and it doesn't really make sense that the top 4 Conference champions get a bye but the 5th doesn't even get a home game. It should have been 8 or 16 with nobody getting a bye, or maybe 14 with only the top 2 getting byes like the NFL.
I just can’t comprehend why some college football fans want less games in the playoff. If you don’t wanna watch a blowout switch to another game, stop trying to ruin something that every fan has wanted since the introduction of the 4 team playoff.
I do think people don't realize that this first round is designed to be the most lop-sided EVER. First of all, a huge percentage of previous playoff games are decided by 10+ points. And that was when 1 played either 2 or 4. Or 2 played 1 or 3. Now we have a match-up as bad as 5 and 12. And when you throw in home field advantage it tips the scales even more. Also, just because a team loses, even by a significant amount, it doesn't mean they didn't deserve to be there. But I'm also not saying that this playoff selection was perfect. But losing doesn't automatically disqualify. I think strength of record should matter more in the selection. And that these should probably be played at neutral sites. This should balance them better in my opinion.
Ever since the 4 team playoff I had been saying we needed 8 teams. But they skipped right over 8 teams to 12. And now it looks like 8 teams would have been better. 7 Power Conference teams and 1 Group of Five team. That's how I had imagined it all along and I still feel it would have been ideal.
you didn't watch any of the games then EDIT: I read what the comment is wrong, I read "they were the least competitive" what the comment says is correct
I think Clemson surprisingly was the only loss team that deserved to be in. If they scored that td at the 1 yd line they would have put up the e most points against Texas all year long which is 31
We still don't know much about Notre Dame tbh, considering both they and Indiana had Charmin soft schedules, and their (ND's) two top 25 wins are against the armed forces teams, which are better this year, but still not great. SMU, Indiana, and Notre Dame all had the same thing going for them, and that was soft schedules. And if Georgia beats ND, we won't know much about Georgia either.
I think the lesson to be learned isn't "we need to change how we evaluate teams." I think the lesson is "we need to change how we SEED teams." Penn State was ranked #3. Instead of getting a first-round bye or even the no. 5 seed, they played the second-to-last team in the CFP so that the No. 9 and 12 teams got their byes. Now, if Boise and Az State prove to be better than Penn State and Texas (respectively), maybe that'll be a good thing. If not, it'll be fair to wonder if keeping the exact same playoff field and re-seeding the teams would've avoided some of the really bad blowouts. It's unlikely - I'd argue a laughable idea - that swapping in teams like Alabama or Ole Miss with stronger schedules would change anything since they've already demonstrated they aren't any better than Tennessee (with one losing to the Vols, and the other struggling to even beat bottom-feeders like Kentucky). As good as Ohio State is, there isn't a big gap between them and Pann State or Notre Dame, or at least one big enough to justify overlooking Tennessee's blowout loss. When you're ranked lower, but have a way better schedule, it's because you truly, royally screwed up. It's hard to trust a team that drops the ball (pun intended) that hard to replicate their best wins in the CFP.
Naw, forget the stupid auto bids. 8-12 Best teams are in. That's it. Consider SOS in that too. If you don't like that, I can tell you what's going to happen. It's going to revert to an auto seed where the SEC and Big 10 get 4 automatic seeds, big 12 gets 1, ACC 1-2, 1-2 at large bids (Including Notre Dame and the Pac-12). That's what's coming if people don't fix this. Otherwise shrink and be SEC and Big10 with 2 auto seeds, 1 seed from ACC, Big 12, and 2 at large bids. That's what's coming.
Tennessee is the most injured team in the country. They weren’t even at 60% healthy. When you’re having to start third string players on defense then obviously it’s gonna be hard to compete. That doesn’t mean they didn’t deserve to be in the playoff. They most definitely did. They just didn’t have the players to support a long run.
FSU missed out because of a QB being missing so in retrospect I think there’s an argument Tennessee should’ve been left out due to the standard set by the committee
It might take years before a big upset happens, and that’s OK. As a Utah fan, I wish our 06 and 09 team had this playoff - I genuinely believe both teams would’ve won
Nah I think PSU can contain jeanty. This is a playoff game remember, and penn state is team that certainly knows how to prepare. Also think about the other side of the ball. I’m sure Allar will have some fun with the Boise state defense
I tried watching five minutes of the Notre Dame game and didn't watch another one. Once I saw that blowout I knew they all were going to be blowouts. Idaho would of kept it closer against these teams.
I think having those “mid” teams are good because yes right now they struggled but now that it has become real they will start to gain experiences and also it gives a chance for truly random Cinderella teams to win
SMU also faced and beat Louisville at home. BYU was not their only significant game. The issue is that Defense in the ACC is terrible, so they weren't used to that.
No amount of evaluation tweaks will stop blowouts from happening. There will be at least one blowout next round, and most likely one in the semis. There is a decent chance the championship game will be a blowout. Just tthr way football is. Hell, the Super Bowl had a long run where the majority of games were blowouts.
Conference realignment. 6 20-team super conferences SEC, BIG10, Big 12, ACC, MW and MAC? Each team plays 8 games in conference and 1 game against a team in each of the other 5 conferences.
No we need smaller divisions with 8-10 teams. That way you have a true round robin thus end up with the most deserving team to represent that conference in a playoff If your school can't make the cut in conference play GET BETTER
@@Michael-sb8jf I say conference sizes can't be prime numbers larger than 7. Scheduling becomes a crap shoot larger. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 16 (maybe 20 if rivalries are ignored) allow for the best scheduling.
Hey Isaac I have been watching you for a while and have been inspired by you a lot 😀.i have been making videos but I have not been getting views,do you have any tips
I feel like some people don't realize the talent disparity between a top 5 team and a top 15 team I fully believe the committee got it right, unlike last year. Tennessee belonged there, Indiana Belonged there, SMU belonged there, and Clemson belonged there and deserved to be rewarded for the seasons they had regardless of SOS. The playoff was made to reward seasons like these. Bama fans can complain all they want but maybe you should not lose by 21 points to an unranked team.
I understand the argument for bama and ole miss and they are prob better then smu and Indiana but they dint DESERVE to be if you wanna make it then don’t lose to vandy Kentucky and Kentucky
IMHO, no conference should have more than 3 teams in the CFP. Maybe have the conferences decide which ones. Or the conferences need to me more careful about their scheduling. Otherwise, Indiana would have been in over Ohio State. Frankly, that's a B1G problem. Isaac, you nailed it with the comment about 'Bama and Ole' Miss winning ever single hypothetical matchup ever. If you can't be in the top 3 of your own conference, you shouldn't be in the tourney. Only having 1 BigXII team in the CFP is not cool.
they should get rid of the "conference champs get byes" thing. Give the top 4 teams byes, regardless of conference. The would have had Boise and ASU playing this past weekend and, who knows, maybe it gives us some watchable games.
Personally, for OSU, I feel like either two things happened against Michigan: They threw the game on purpose (unlikely) Chip Kelly got petty with the run game cuz Michigan outran his offense (likely) He knows what to do and the game against Tenessee proves it, he just needs to not be petty when something isn't working
Kelly can be very stubborn... Learned that when he was at Oregon. He couldn't adjust against teams that had their offense figured out. It's why he failed in the NFL too with Philly.
They shouldnt have gave the top 4 conference winners byes, they should've just gave them a playoff berth and seeded them based off of the top 25. If that was the case Oregon would be playing either boise state or Indiana in the 2nd rd
Saying it’s mid teams vrs low teams is objectively wrong because two of the “high teams” in the top 4 would probably be mid or low anyways and some other teams like Ohio state, texas, and penn state had close games with Oregon or Georgia. And so then when you give them a home field advantage they are obviously going to win by a lot the majority of the time when you compare them to bubble teams that were fighting to get in because the gap between them and any other teams is so large
I think you get rid of on campus playoff games. It is way too difficult to go on the road and win these games. They need to add in other bowl games like the Citrus Bowl and Sun Bowl in the first round and have teams play there
Eh, blowouts have happened since the dawn of time, and they will happen in a bracket that's designed to put lower seeds against higher seeds to give them an easier path to the later rounds. 12 teams is fine, I just think the auto-byes need to go. Give the top 5 conference champs auto-bids instead, and then seed based on CFP rank. That way we may have had a more interesting 8v9 or 7v10 game at least.
Look, it comes down to this. If you want confrence championships to matter then the playoff has to be 12-14 teams. The other. option is going to 8 teams and not having conference championships and taking the top 8 after the end of the regular season. You might get more competative games but not by much. In this scenario, Indiana woudve played oregon in round 1. Also it would be exclusively sec and big 10. Thoughts on this: 14 team playoff. 4 highest ranked conference champions get auto bids. The 2 highest ranked conference champions get 1st round byes. Now go back and apply that too the week 15 cfp rankings.
Counterpoint to your Notre Dame concerns: Georgia doesn't have their starting QB, has been bad on offense all year even with Beck, and are running into a buzzsaw ND defense. It'll be an ugly game for sure but I'm confident ND wins.
I think they got everybody right. Maybe some of the games will be closer in the future just didn't play out like it did yeah the NCAA committee did get the the right teams in

If you didnt make the playoffs in a 12 team playoffs i dont feel bad. You can make a case of how you do the seeding so there isnt lop sided way of going through playoffs but even that play who is in front of you i have no sympathy theres 12 teams
SOS MATTERS. At least play good teams and beat them. UI playing in the Big10 is like watching a MAC team make it. Play good teams or put in the default 9-3 SEC team. Easy fix
I think people need to realize college teams just aren't consistent. Especially when you add in the hostile environment and playing in the biggest game of their life. I think if we give it time it could balance out as more teams get experience.
There were a clear gap between the top 6 seeds and the rest. And let's not be surprised by the blowouts. Texas and Penn State should of had byes. OSU is not an 8 seed, but because of the Michigan loss they got a lower seed. And ND is really good. The gap between OSU and Tennessee is HUGE, I'm not surprised by the 4 blow outs.
The national championship should have representation from the best teams from all conferences. I don't care if SEC teams get left out, we have a championship game deciding the best team in the SEC, that's the SEC championship. The CFP should be all-conference champions and the best teams from each conference, if there are blowouts than that will help determine which conferences have more strength. I am just so done with all this SEC is great bias because this is college football, any team can win or lose on any day.
Yup. Canada figured this out in the 1960s. We have 4 conferences to deal with, and we take the 4 conference champions and put them in 2 semi-final games. Since the FBS has 9 or 10 conferences that stage a championship game, all the conference champions deserve a shot. If you want to preserve the 12-team format, I think that is fine, but give all conference champions a shot at the national title.
The problem is the way they are obligated to give byes to certain teams which pushes other teams into the first round. Give Texas and PSU byes and you solve half the problems here. Another issue is massive conferences like big10. When you have a conference that big you can have a team from the conference have a weak schedule even though the conference has some of the best teams in college football.
Do you all not know this is how sports work??? were you all really expecting the underdogs to win over the favorites? have you all not watched any playoffs ?? the underdog or higher seed usually never wins. yes they have won sometimes but to expect SMU, Indiana, clemson, and Tennessee to beat Norte dame, Texas, Penn state, Ohio state is wild. I want what you guys are smoking on.
The blowouts resulted from poor formatting. Winning a conference championship shouldn't guarantee a bye. Instead, 12 teams (5 champs + 7 committee picks) should be ranked 1-12, with the top 4 receiving byes. In the second round, the 1 seed plays the lowest-ranked seed, and so on. This way, a team like Oregon, which went undefeated and won its conference, won't have to face a top 5 team due to bad seeding.
We didn’t learn anything about the playoffs. Yes there were blowouts, but I’d need to see a few iterations of the playoff before I’m convinced that this format is broken
I feel like people don't even remember that even with a 4 team playoff we got absolute blow outs as well.

Playoff games at the school's home stadium will be almost a gimme
The first round byes should be reserved for the four best teams while the other 8 should be conference champions and wildcard spots
Clemson vs Texas was at least competitive.
you didn't watch any of the games then
EDIT: I read what the comment is wrong, I read "they were the least competitive" what the comment says is correct
@@IsaacPuntsClemson started to comeback but then just let Texas just run through them
We were so close to actually winning, but our coordinators on both sides of the ball cost us the game.
I think Clemson surprisingly was the only loss team that deserved to be in. If they scored that td at the 1 yd line they would have put up the e most points against Texas all year long which is 31
The SMU game could have been a lot better if the QB didn’t choke
Couldn’t agree more. Defense held up great. Game easily could’ve been 14 to 0 SMU at half
@@tcgsarahkris would have...should have..... DIDN'T!!!!
“Might be the 5th best team now that ole Miss and Alabama got to rack up some hypothetical wins” pure solid comedic gold!!!!
I think the lesson to be learned isn't "we need to change how we evaluate teams." I think the lesson is "we need to change how we SEED teams."
Penn State was ranked #3.
I love the Penn State throwbacks
It might take years before a big upset happens, and that’s OK. As a Utah fan, I wish our 06 and 09 team had this playoff - I genuinely believe both teams would’ve won
Playing at home is good.
Excited for the Boise state game, I’m a fan, and I think a lot of people will be afterwards if they’re not already, enjoy the show
Nah I think PSU can contain jeanty.
I gotta say, this was fun. I'm an old dude who never liked the obsession with #1 .. but I am totally down for more of this.
No different then watching TCU get crushed in the National Championship
Completely different, because this is not the National Championship lol.
The top 12 was perfect it’s just home field advantage
I agree experience matters that’s how Clemson made it and was competitive
That way you have a true round robin thus end up with the most deserving team to represent that conference in a playoff
If your school can't make the cut in conference play GET BETTER
@@Michael-sb8jf I say conference sizes can't be prime numbers larger than 7. Scheduling becomes a crap shoot larger. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 16 (maybe 20 if rivalries are ignored) allow for the best scheduling.
Hey Isaac I have been watching you for a while and have been inspired by you a lot 😀.i have been making videos but I have not been getting views,do you have any tips
I feel like some people don't realize the talent disparity between a top 5 team and a top 15 team
I fully believe the committee got it right, unlike last year.
The 12th team playoff is an extended round to see who makes the 8-Team playoff
Only game i was REALLY dammed about was SMU. I expected more but, anything can happen ig. Especially bc i kept being told they were a good contender.
there are so many competetive teams with talented athletes and coaches. it would be good busines and exposure for at least 18 seeds
Just need to re rank the bracket after the first round. Would make things a lot less cheesy for Oregon.
Oregon, Arizona State, Boise State and Notre Dame advance.
You gotta make a video about the absolutely abysmal special team performances in the Idaho Potato Bowl
why do I keep watching the games, they almost always end in blowouts
Hold on, you think Boise beats Penn State? Naw. and I'm a Texas fan, don't care, but think you're way off.
I understand the argument for bama and ole miss and they are prob better then smu and Indiana but they dint DESERVE to be if you wanna make it then don’t lose to vandy Kentucky and Kentucky
No but having 0 relevant wins gets you to the playoffs.
Smaller teams got the benefit of the doubt this year, won't be so easy next year
IMHO, no conference should have more than 3 teams in the CFP.
Boise State's offense isn't gonna do anything crazy. UNLV held them to 21 points, what do you think Penn State's defense is gonna do?
And how many against Wyoming?
Personally, for OSU, I feel like either two things happened against Michigan:
They threw the game on purpose (unlikely)
Chip Kelly got petty with the run game cuz Michigan outran his offense (likely)
He knows what to do and the game against Tenessee proves it, he just needs to not be petty when something isn't working
Kelly can be very stubborn... Learned that when he was at Oregon. He couldn't adjust against teams that had their offense figured out. It's why he failed in the NFL too with Philly.
The fact some teams domt have a specialist coach is baffling to me as a OC lmfao
0:17 torching bad teams, the only ranked team they played all year was Ohio State and which they got blew out 38-15
They shouldnt have gave the top 4 conference winners byes, they should've just gave them a playoff berth and seeded them based off of the top 25.
1:29 it will be a neutral site
Against Georgia, in Atlanta… about the least neutral a neutral site can be
maybe we shouldn’t seed conference champs with an auto bye. That might help out
I think you get rid of on campus playoff games.
I’ve heard it all
“Cam Skabedo”
Also, Isaac, familiarize yourself with Sam Leavitt please
Look, it comes down to this. If you want confrence championships to matter then the playoff has to be 12-14 teams. The other. option is going to 8 teams and not having conference championships and taking the top 8 after the end of the regular season. You might get more competative games but not by much. In this scenario, Indiana woudve played oregon in round 1. Also it would be exclusively sec and big 10. Thoughts on this: 14 team playoff. 4 highest ranked conference champions get auto bids. The 2 highest ranked conference champions get 1st round byes. Now go back and apply that too the week 15 cfp rankings.
Wait let me try....... SEC was the least competitive conference in the first round. What did I win?
Counterpoint to your Notre Dame concerns: Georgia doesn't have their starting QB, has been bad on offense all year even with Beck, and are running into a buzzsaw ND defense. It'll be an ugly game for sure but I'm confident ND wins.
The most competitive game was a three loss team versus an SEC team
Ohio State was the only team this weekend to use their backups. Indiana was just genuinely that bad
I think they got everybody right. Maybe some of the games will be closer in the future just didn't play out like it did yeah the NCAA committee did get the the right teams in
How about we don’t rethink anything just yet? This has been a weird year with conf realignment, surprise teams, and random upsets. Let’s let this format run for another season or 2 before declaring it broken
Eight is enough. That’s what I learned.
What we learned is what we already knew 😲😲😲😮😮🤯🤯🤯
I mean, what about TCU vs Georgia two years ago? Did they not deserve to make the playoffs?
We could say that about every national championship blowout.
Heck, there was a year Alabama got blown out in the natty.
@@BraveTarnished-l2q There was also a year back in the BCS when Notre Dame got blown out by alabama. The score was like 28-0 at halftime. That was probably the worst national championship I've ever seen.
@@deepfornoreasonx Largest margin of loss in the BCS was 2004 USC beating OU 55-19. That was also a year with 6 undefeated teams.....
It's best to just ignore all the complaints, for the most part. It doesn't matter what the format is, there will ALWAYS be complaining and whining. Some folks will never be satisfied.
Guys what we got is literally the 18 playoff. This first round is a test to see if there are any top eight frauds. Or any 9 to 12 underdogs. Every top a team passed the test.
What we learned is the ACC doesn't deserve a bid for winning their conference. Let alone multiple teams
I agree on the notre dame part, they have a weaker schedule than SMU and Indiana so I’m not convinced they’re on the level of Georgia
TN Tech, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, UMass, MS State, LOST to Ole Miss, boy that Georgia schedule lol
@@theassinthehatalabama, tennessee, texas twice?
@BozBoy101 Alabama aint good this year, Tennessee was shown to be a fraud this weekend. Yes they beat Texas twice but you can't possibly tell me they had a hard schedule when half the teams they played were roll overs
@@theassinthehat Name a team with a considerably tougher schedule then. Georgia is #1 in SOS
@@theassinthehat half of oregons schedule is rollovers but were not talking about them in bad light. also, tennessee isnt fraudulent, they just played osu, who if you payed attention, is a VERY GOOD TEAM. tennessee had no advantage over them. anywhere. georgia tech is not bad by any means, and kentucky and mississippi state have been competing in sec games all year.
That’s what happens when teams with very different tiers collide
Did bro really try and dismiss the last 90 seconds of a game as if you can't score points that win the game during those 90 seconds?
Ohio state is playing pissed, i'm excited for the oregon game
Ohio state Oregon will be peak
i agree
if they can do what they did last time, it will be. i doubt it will be as close though.
Yeah. Oregon is levels ahead of Tenne-trash
Hopefully this is a feature and not a bug, get the blow outs out of the way…hopefully
naw, these were the appropriate matchups and the expected outcomes. The home games were huge and a nice trade off from the Bowl games.
Most hostile environments? Well, in Ohio State's defense, they did chant "SEC" for a bit to try to make Tennessee feel welcome lol
Isaac please look up what cfp means. IT ALREADY HAS PLAYOFF IN THE NAME
GO BSU AHHHHHHHHH!
We learned it needs to be the top 8 teams instead of 12 or whatever because the bottom 4 did not deserve to be anywhere near the playoffs.
Those are both great points. I think they got the right 12 teams. They just seeded them way wrong
Boise is worse than SMU they will get rolled by PSU
What's messed up is that Ryan Day might not make it out of the hood even if Ohio State beats Oregon and plays in the semis LMAO
There was only one thing to learn: there are not 12 teams capable of winning the CFP.
If youre arguing about the 8-12 seeds then you probably didnt deserve to get in anyway
Do you all not know this is how sports work???
were you all really expecting the underdogs to win over the favorites?
have you all not watched any playoffs ?? the underdog or higher seed usually never wins. yes they have won sometimes but to expect
SMU, Indiana, clemson, and Tennessee to beat Norte dame, Texas, Penn state, Ohio state is wild.
We need to go down to 8 teams
Dear crying bama fans. Don't lose to Vanderbilt, and 24-3 to Oklahoma. Does not matter what you say. You have three losses.
BSU and ASU getting buys were simply DEI hires.
We didn’t learn anything about the playoffs. Yes there were blowouts, but I’d need to see a few iterations of the playoff before I’m convinced that this format is broken
I think the top 4 teams should get the bye round, not conference champions.
