Let other people have cats and dogs! Jungle Bob is here to show you that owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as complicated as you might think. In this video, he shares seven tips about caring for a green iguana.
Throughout the decades that reptiles have been popular pets, I think the number one seller probably has been the green iguana. Green iguanas hold the stigma from those old Japanese B movies, where they put an iguana across a model of Tokyo and pretended that he was Godzilla. Iguanas have fascinated Americans and have become the number one pet, for sure, over the last 20, 30 years.
Personally, I don't think they make the best pets. And the reason why is because there is a lot of husbandry needed; these are tropical animals, they require the proper humidity and heat. They need ultraviolet lights, they need a specialized diet. But, really, it's because they sometimes have an attitude. When they get about 6 feet long, a male iguana suddenly isn't as calm as my little friend here. A male iguana will potentially turn on its owner, and establish its territory in the home.
If it's in a fish tank, he's absolutely going to be upset. They really have to be outside in an 8 by 8 foot, 8 foot high room, sitting on a limb, looking down on their owner. And then they're perfectly fine pets. But if you want to keep them in a fish tank and approach them from the top, they sometimes get skittish. When they are skittish, the number one thing they do is whip their tail in your direction. The second thing they'll do is try to bite. And the third thing is rake you with their claws.
Either one of those things is an event you don't want to experience, because a 6-foot iguana, this guy is about 2, maybe, a 6-foot iguana is a formidable creature that can inflict harm. We also have seen that male iguanas when they get old, when they become sexually mature, turn on their owners because they're territorial and want to establish their own area. And that is usually the time they end up coming back to the pet store, or back where they came from.
If no one will take them back, people will let them go. And in northern climates, that's a death sentence for the animal. In southern climates, like Florida, they have procreated, and they have now established, and they are now truly an invasive species. So, I always say, if you want an iguana, please go get one. My choice for an iguana would be the rock iguanas.
The rock iguanas are a big bodied creature that comes form the Caribbean Islands. And here I've got a good friend of mine, and the green iguana is scared of him, I would imagine so. This is Castro; he's a Cuban rock iguana. And you see Castro, who is now 15 years old, has a much different temperament than our green iguana friend. A 15 year old iguana would not be as tolerant to be touched in this nature. Castro is not trying to whip me with his tail, Castro is not trying to run away. He is a really sure of himself type of lizard who makes a wonderful pet or companion.
We choose not to keep an animal this big in a cage, unless you build something custom for him. They freely can roam a home, and know where to do their business. They're straight herbivores; they love their veggies and fruits, and they really are an incredible companion and pet. We take him to the park and walk him like a dog all the time. So, if you're going to go for an iguana, think twice about the green types. There are some dessert species that are great, but the rock iguanas truly rock. Here's the Cuban iguana, Castro.

That Rock Iguana is amazing. Such a gorgeous creature. With such a gentle temperament (with proper care) it'd be great to have just amble around the home on its own and so that you as the Owner enjoy its company. Maybe some day I'll get one, of course with all the proper additional information and know-how before doing so.

***** I wouldn't say any Iguana turns on its owner, they just get temporarily grumpy I guess you could say, except the kind of grumpy you get when you break windows trying to get your reflection! :) Yes, the Cyclura (Rock) genus does get the same hormonal aggression as the Iguana (Green) genus gets, but I can't guarantee any more or less, just because each individual is different.

***** For Green Iguanas (Iguana Iguana) breeding season lasts from 3-9 months every year. Like I said, this is how Green Iguanas are, I'm not entirely sure it's the same for Rock Iguanas.

I agree with this guy 150%!!! I rescued a green, very young female iguana who had her jaw broken. The other males wouldn't let her eat, so I took her, hand fed her baby food (Athena loves green beans, stage 2 Gerber - recommended by a top reptile expert in San Diego - Dr. Jenkins - for my bearded dragons, too.) and her jaw healed (it was completely detached...I was shocked when it healed 100% and happy!) She gets regular greens now, too, but she loves her vegetable baby food.
She slept on the headboard of my bed and was sooo sweet for the first year of her life and very attached to me! Fast forward to her at 3 years old, and she started becoming really nasty and mean, so I leave her in her tank.
She's 5 now and every time I take her out, it's an ordeal. I have scars and scratches on my arms and hands and she whips her tail at me and has even tried to bite me. I wear big leather gloves to let her out and sit in the window from time to time and even out in the open, if I go near her, she whips her tail at me and sits up and back when I go near her. I can't pet her on the head anymore like I used to, so it's miserable for both of us.
If I gave her away, no one would put up with her behavior, so at least she's safe with good food and fresh water. I wish UA-cam would allow us to upload a photo here so I could show you how gorgeous and large she is, but she's just too aggressive and mean. I'd love to walk her, but I don't think that's an option. She's thick and strong...really strong!
I love my bearded dragons. I'd never get another iguana again. They are much more maintenance and bearded dragons are the most docile reptiles and easy maintenance of any I've owned.

I had a male Green Iguana for 24 years and I guess there are exceptions.
I handled him near daily. He had free roam inside and a custom 20x5x5 cage outside (I live in Florida).
He was exceptionally mellow for a male and didn't care how I handled him. He was actually far more trouble when he was younger.
That being said, almost no one else could handle him. He would avoid being held and not leave his cage. When I'd come to the cage he'd leave his perch and come right to me. It was very obvious he was my Iguana as the temperament described here was how he treated everyone but me. Never bit me, never wiped me after age 2 or so and I managed to keep his tail fully intact.
I'm proud of how I raised him, how he turned out, stayed beautiful till the end and I'll miss him.

I have a one year and 4 month old male green iguana named Iggyman he is shy and he does hite but he does not bite, I will never give up on my iguana. Green Iguanas do make good pets and they are able to be tamed but it just takes time. No matter what breed of a iguana a person gets it will still take time to tame it and all iguanas are diffent.

Once again, great video Howcast! But I do have one thing to say, I don't like how you seem to point at all Green Iguanas, and say that they are all very shy and aggressive animals. Sure, they can be aggressive when not interacted with, or during breeding season, but that does not make them aggressive animals. They all have different personalities and deserve to be respected.

My red iguana has been acting very wild all summer--flying around her cage, rubbing her nose against the bars and hurting herself there. She's also barely touching her food.

    • @TheAnimalGuyTV
      @TheAnimalGuyTV 10 років тому

This is caused by improper care. You need to take your Iguana to the vet to get a checkup because he/she is probably ill. You said, "bars" no cage should ever have bars. An open cage will let the humidity out, causing the Iguana to breath in dry air and dry the organs, which is deadly. You need to build a custom cage made out of wood and glass or acrylic, covered on the top, bottom, and sides with wood and the front with the glass or acrylic.
Please tell me your whole setup so I can tell you how to fix the problems that are causing your Iguana to suffer. Please respond for the sake of your pet.

    • @dfadden62

Well my iguana's enclosure does have bars. It's an aviary that is divided in half and houses both my iguanas. And sorry but no, I do not have the thousands of dollars to buy a "Cage by Design" or other cage of like size that would be better suited for a lizard. So I make due as best I can. Sadly for my iguanas not all of us get to be rich enough for such things. I also can't go buy a huge glass tank (I have looked into that) because then there's the weight thing. I am just one middle aged woman. I am not able to lift or maneuver a huge glass tank and I do not have male friends I can ask to help me either.

You don't have to buy one of those Cages by Design cages, you can hire someone to build one for you! They can be a bit pricey sometimes, but it's worth it for your pets! :) Just do what you can for them! :)

I am hoping to build a cage myself, but even the cost of wood is very expensive. And then you have to have glass panels for the walls.
Hire someone to build one.... That sounds like a great idea. Any suggestions on what I should be searching for or advertising for? A carpenter, perhaps?
I am currently unemployed and driving for Uber to get by--it's not a lot of money. I am hoping, however, to win a lawsuit soon against a company I worked at who discriminated against me. If I win Iand I think I have a good shot) it is on the top of my list to get my iguanas into a proper enclosure. And happily the mediation with this employer happens (or at least I was told) sometime in Sept or October so hopefully soon.

TheAnimalGuyTV Also, you mention (or someone did) coil UVB lights. That's what I've used because no one has told me these aren't healthy for lizards. I am trying to slowly replace them out with the kind that are straight. These are expensive though, and require dome lamps. So I'm not able to replace them all at once. But my iguanas now have had them for about a month.

So have anyone who has cared for a adult male green iguana experienced dramatically increase aggression as described in the video, or is it simply dependent on each animal independently? I just got a young iguana yesterday and I'm wondering if I build a strong relationship with it now, will it be tame as an adult?

Learn their schedule. My GC blue / Cuban hybrid goes once in the morning, once at night, like clockwork. I just pull him out of his cage, put him in his newspaper-lined litter box, and let him do his thing. He knows that's where to go because I give him a bath every day; when he does that squatty thing (if you've had an iggie of any kind for a while, you know what I mean), pull him out of the tub and put him in the litter box, and go crazy over him or reward him somehow or both. My lil guy goes wacko for praise (kind of like a parrot), so that's what got him to poop there consistently, but others could be different. It'll take a while, but just keep plugging away at it and it'll probably work out eventually. Remember, though, even potty-trained animals can and will have accidents. Good luck!
