Songs for My Grandmother Remixes is the latest in the ever-evolving musical adventures of Tuğçe Kurtiş. The original EP released also on Souq Records in 2017 was selected as “one of the best albums from Turkey in 2017” (Beehype) and produced in partnership with Tuğçe’s long time collaborator Santi (Santiago Ferreira), the remarkable producer/composer who is known not only for his novel arrangements of Anatolian and Balkan music, but also for “rewriting Paraguayan folklore” (Thump Vice Brazil). With this new compilation, Tuğçe Kurtiş presents another take on her grandmother’s favorite songs through contributions by a luminary team of producers. The remix album begins with Acid Pauli’s enticingly atmospheric rendition of “Yıldızların Altında” (Underneath the Stars), followed by San Miguel’s characteristically heartful and soothing version. Álvaro Suárez then takes Yıldızların Altında decisively deep into the dancefloor with his sensual and hypnotic style, while Anatolian Sessions brings it home with the luring sounds of flute and kaval. The next track is the only remix of “Gözleri Aşka Gülen” (The One Whose Eyes Smile at Love) on the album where Alizarina fully embraces the song’s joyful spirit and creates moments of magic through his sublime clarinet lines. Then comes Rodrigo Gallardo who skillfully transports the Turkish vintage “Sevdan Olmasa” (Without Your Love) into the Andes through his folkloric flute and ritualistic vibe. Spy from Cairo presents yet another enchanting, idiosyncratically “Arabadub” rendition of this track with his delightful strings, deep baseline, and lush percussion. The album ends lavishly with an irresistibly groovy version of “Sevdan Olmasa” by Drumspyder who intricately weaves together hand percussion and electronic sounds into the finely sculpted grooves of the original track. In keeping with the
vibrant spirit of the remix album, Scott Partridge’s artwork depicts a multi-colored remake of the “spider grandmother” from the original cover. With great artists from across the globe and musical genres, these carefully crafted renditions of Songs for My Grandmother take us on a journey that pays a loving homage to ancestors and propels us into a boundless future.
