Saw an interview with Johnny Cash years ago and the reporter asked the question that I wish would be asked more often: “What are you listening to now?” Yes, we gain insight from the classic question, “Who influenced you?” But to know what great artists are currently into is even more intriguing to me. Anyway, Johnny’s answer, without hesitation, was “Tracy Chapman.” He really liked her style. So do I. Great choice y’all! 👍🏻
The only thing that I don't like about Tracy Chapman is that she has relatively few recordings. I so wish she'd recorded more. I've seen her live several times and she is phenomenal.
Amen!
She records rarely because when she does it is perfection.
She has 3 or four albums
@@kathrynstafford7099 in 35 years
@@garyking6519 Agreed, but I'm selfish and greedy. I'd love more from Ms. Chapman.
No one sounds like Tracy Chapman. She's iconic!
I love this song! Her voice (to me) is a cross between Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse. I would listen to her sing a grocery list.
@MrWackaloon...
Gimme one dozen tomatoes and I'll crush them up real fine. Gimme one pound of sausage and I'll brown it in no time. Well...I already got some pasta...I'ma have sketty dinner with my wine.
@@lethiapage4767 Nice! :D
@@lethiapage4767 Good one!
@@lethiapage4767 hahahaha
It's a great voice
You cannot listen to this song without bobbing your head and tapping your foot! Love this song with its soul & the background singer(s). Love it Love it Love it!!!
That is NOT a jazzy guitar, that is classic BLUES guitar...
These guys are still learning, but you are definitely correct there.
This song is a classic blues song. Repeat a phrase twice and then a closing phrase in each verse. 3 chord progression structure. And yes she has a soulful voice. Most blues singers do!
Yup pure blues
There is a live recording somewhere of Tracy and Eric Clapton performing tis song. I've heard it before. Now I have to look it up again.
@@boblozaintherealworld3577 Clapton and Babyface doing 'Change The World' is also a pretty good punt, imo..
@@boblozaintherealworld3577 It's a live "Christmas" album performed outside, I believe. Maybe New York or D.C. ?
Tracy Chapman. ........ "Across The Lines" , "My Mountains of Things" , "Sorry"
Tracy hit hard and then sort of faded. I was hoping she would have more staying power as she had a lot to say in her music. I know she still plays but hoped we would hear more.
I would like to hear more from her too. I know she acted in a couple movies. . .
She's still around, just on a smaller scale.
She has a parallel in the Uk a great artist who quietly goes on being a great musician.. the Great Joan Armatrading 😎 also still recording and performing when she likes.
Tracy says she hates the fame and limelight. She’d rather play small, intimate clubs. Her choice.
i think its by choice i believe shes really in it for the art not just revenue and fame she looks so introverted when she performs and fame is the worst thing for an artist like that
She does this song with Eric Clapton live!!! Find it.💋💋💋 ETTA JAMES, ETTA JAMES, ETTA JAMES!!!!😎
AT LAST somebody agrees with me
Yes!! At Last by Etta James!!!! The Rob Squad would love it.
Her debut album “Tracy Chapman” is an incredible album. “Baby can I hold you” and “talking about a revolution” are must listens. Also “All that you have is you soul” is a great one.
Tracy Chapman is a great singer-songwriter & storyteller. Have always loved her unusual voice. She is best known for her hit singles "Fast Car", "Talkin' 'bout A Revolution", "Baby Can I Hold You", "Crossroads" & "Give Me One Reason".
My favorite song of hers is The Promise.
Love this song! If I'm in the car and arrive at my destination and this is playing, I don't get out of car until it is over. She and Eric Clapton performed this as a duet. You can find the video.
I just saw that duet for the very first time yesterday. It was a treat to see and hear them together.
They worked great together.
Another artist that could work would be Tracy with Bonnie Raitt. The song with some tasty slide guitar would be awesome.
@@matthewdrake4385 Checkout Tracy, Bonnie and Beth Hart "Sweet Home Chicago" performance
Yes, exactly!
Tracy was a true poet. This and "Fast Car" were probably her best-known songs, but please check out "Talkin' 'bout a Revolution", "Crossroads", and "Smoke and Ashes". She made folk music accessible to so many, with nothing more than her voice and her guitar.
Every song is fantastic by Tracy. 😍 Talking About a Revolution is great.
My favorite TC song!
Tracy singing this song with Eric Clapton on guitar is a must-see.
Agree. Clapton at his collaborative best.
really great together!
Saw her in ‘88 in Dublin, Ireland such a sooooothing voice, such a talent.
Baby Can I Hold You is another great song of hers.
Tracy is phenomenal. Let’s hope she releases something new.
Absolutely an incredible artist and performer! She has so much more to explore! Thanks you two wonderful humans for always making me smile! 💕
Female Friday= Fleetwood Mac Silver Springs ( the live version) it will blow your mind how Stevie’s voice will haunt you in this one!!
Tracy Chapman was one of those artists that you just felt compelled to support. Her artistry and talent was unmistakable yet down to Earth.
Check out the jazzy, groovey chic Rickie Lee Jones.."Chuck E's In Love", "Danny's All Star Joint", "Easy Money".
YES !! Rickee Lee Jones. I have mentioned her a couple of times already on other reaction posts. Also, “Horses”, “Livin’ It Up”, “We Belong Together “ , “Pirates(So Long Lonely Avenue)”, “Last Chance Texaco”, “The Real End”, “This Must Be Love”, “Satellites” and many more.
Armed Forces Network used Tracy Chapman’s song The Promise for their video about military family reunions, and that song has always stuck with me for that reason.
Didn’t know that, thank you! As a veteran, that means so much to hear. Love that song, one of my favorites!
When my Dad was in his 60's he discovered the music of Tracy Chapman and James Taylor both, he really enjoyed them, especially Tracy.🥰🌻
I love Tracy Chapmans soulful voice .. smooth as butter … you guys should try Norah Jones come away with me ! You won’t be disappointed..
This came out right after I'd been dumped by a girlfriend -- and it forced me to really think things through -- to own my part in the relationship swirling down in flames.
Don't worry...
I'm OK now.
🐯
There’s a live video of her and Eric Clapton performing this ☮️💜
Absolutely love this song! She's so underrated. Such an emotional voice.
My favorite songs or when she does the blues.
I love Tracy Chapman! You would both LOVE Lisa Stansfield singing Around the World live at the Apollo Theater! Can I get an amen from all you others commenting?❤
Amen! Now let the music play.
[edit] I've just seen they've already done it]
Such a good song … her delivery, words, instruments…. Underrated lady!
This song won the Grammy for Best Rock Song in 1997.
I love her voice because it's unique. Nobody else on earth sounds like her.
Oddly deep voice for a woman, but still sounds like a woman, at the same time. She can actually sing deeper than many baritone males, which is incredibly rare for a woman.
So glad you guys are revisiting Tracy. Such a staple of my childhood. “Talkin’ ‘Bout a Revolution” is another classic by her and my favorite (though it often gets overlooked) is “For My Lover”
You must listen to her song “Mountains of Things.” The lyrics combined with her voice are really powerful.
This is what you call a “12 bar blues” song. GREAT blues song!
Her first album is excellent!!!
Gorgeous soft blues- perfect for listening to while sitting on the porch in summer and sippin’ a sweet tea…
If you loved this you ought to see the live version with her and Eric Clapton. It's amazing
"WHY?" "FOR MY LOVER" great tunes by Tracy😎
two weeks in a Virginia jail, for my lover, for my lover. ❤️ ❤️
This song is ALWAYS on my playlist! Tracy on guitar. Soooooo good!! ❤
Love. Love. Love Tracy Chapman! ♥ Y'all should listen to Brittany Howard. My introduction to her was when she was lead singer for the band Alabama Shakes doing the song "Hold On", and she won a Grammy last year for her song "Stay High".
She wanted to put this song her first album, record company said no. When she became famous they let her put on the next album. It won a Grammy.
You need to listen to her song The Promise it's from around 94 o r 95 one of my favorites
I think you both would love ‘Alabama Shakes’…’Heavy Chevy’😁 It’s such a fast, fun, song!!! Please, please, please, react to them!!🙏🙏🙏
They’d love Alabama Shakes. Hold on is recommended
@@matthewdrake4385 been trying for like six months.
Her voice is so deep and rich and amazing. You guys should also react to Toni Braxton if you love Tracy’s voice - please do “Un-break My Heart” and “Another Sad Love Song”.
Tracy Chapman and BB king the thrill is gone
This is a great song. This ones about 10 years after "Fast Car" Another good one by her is "Baby, Can I hold you" ☺
Worship the ground Tracy walks on! What I mean to say is... lol..... Tracy is an absolute Queen!!!! Love her.. and to me .. I'd never tire of you doing Tracy reactions!!!! She's the best.. and her soulful music heals my heart!!! ❤🩹💝💖🥰
She's BB King's niece I swear greatness from a blues icon it seems 😊 they even collaborated together sounded amazing 😊
I remember where I was and exactly what I was doing the first time I heard this song. I was in a shoe store and when it started playing, I was subtly, slowly two stepping down the isle.
A Tracy song perfect for these times.... "Talkin Bout a Revolution." Another fave... "A Hundred Years"
There is an amazing video of Tracy performing with Pavarotti at an open air concert , singing baby can I hold you it's quite a surprise duet but works so well
EVERYONE should check out her album New Beginning. I am 53 and it's in my top three albums of ALL TIME. Soooo good. Not one single mediocre song on it.
I love Tracy's vocals! She's Tha Shizz!!! Great Female Friday selection!!!
Remember the band Living Colour? They loved Tracy Chapman so much that they covered her song, "Talkin' Bout a Revolution."
tracy chapman is amazing, you should watch the official video and see her in action it's amazing
Baby Can I Hold You is a great song!
Three Dog Night....Eli's Coming...live
Live version only!!! and then more songs from them!
Ditto
She is so underrated. Her voice and delivery are so pure. I wish she had stay on the charts longer. Her sound was really special.❤️
Awesome song! This song has a special place in my heart. Love it!❤ And 10 years between Fast Car and this? Only added more depth to her vocals and sound.✌
There’s such a great video of this- she looks gorgeous in it!
For you , mountain othings and another sun must listens
This is timeless! Perfection.
I can't believe that Aretha Franklin along with a lot of soul greats never gets played with all this bombardment of rock music!!!!
Probably royalty-related? Good question.
Me too. I've complained. The amazing soul music they've yet to touch is vast. The '70s alone with all those male vocal groups. If only the Temptations could be reacted to as much as Pink Floyd and Queen. And for Aretha not to be reacted to is shameful. The only excuse is if it's blocked and then, only if they tried various ways to get around it.
Most reaction channels only play music they’ve never heard before. Maybe they’ve heard Aretha. Either that or it’s copyright or they just haven’t gotten the message that they’re missing out on *the* true Queen
@@unndunn1 Most reaction channels spend a lot of time starting/stopping the songs to dissect them (what era? What genre? ) that they miss the whole feel of the songs. It also doesn’t help that going into them “blind” (not knowing what the songs are about/what the times were about) that they loose a lot of context.
Love me some Tracy Chapman! Great tune!
Behind the wall is incredible, just her voice no backing music... but it will make you cry
This is a great song. You should listen to Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m The Only One”. It’s got that blues influence, but more of a rock anthem.
They did that one already, about six months ago
Tracy Chapman is wonderful. I remember when she was a local street musician here in Boston
One of my musical heroes. I'm not kidding you. I love her so much!
I was 18 when this came out... and I was soooo happy to hear someone so talented and someone who brought Soul and Jazz in 1999.. she made it cool again.. soooo good!!
This came out in the late 90s and the whole album is amazing. I haven’t listened to it in a while but you’ve inspired me to put it back in rotation.
I love this song Tracy Chapman is so cool
Next trip down this rabbit hole - Talkin' Bout A Revolution, Baby Can I Hold You, Across The Lines
Next for Tracy...her *duet* with *Luciano Pavarotti* . It's lovely. *Baby Can I Hold You Tonight*
This one, and her cover of Cyndi Laupers "Time After Time" are tied for my favorite Tracy Chapman song. That said, I have yet to hear Tracy Chapman do anything I didn't love. ❤️
I never get tired of this song. It's just one of those timeless tracks that could have come out in multiple decades exactly as it is and still sound modern and smooth
I am a 71 year old white guy that is in to country and pop but this song...when it came out I bought the cassette tape ...yes cassette tape!!! I wore that thing out in no time! What a sexual, sensual song and the video is awesome. One of my favorites, thanks
Check out her "Baby Can I Hold You" from her debut album (which also included "Fast Car").
Tracy is incomparable, undeniable, unbelievable, and so under-appreciated.
This song always makes me feel like I'm sitting in a SpeakEasy in New Orleans, Listening to Tracy sing on Stage.
Love Tracy Chapman music 🎶
Some people just can naturally sing with feeling.. and then to have a song written too!!!
There's a LIVE performance with the great, Eric Clapton playing with her. IT'S BRILLIANT! 🤩😍🤩😍
Live, she often used to do a much faster, bluesier version that was awesome.
Love Tracy! A very quiet and unassuming person in concert, but man can she sing! 🥰Try listening to “Talkin’ About A Revolution” next.
That little genius... What an extraordinary talent
There are a lot of jazz and blues songs I don’t care for. I LOVE THIS ONE!!!!!
Jay/Amber, paving the way for Tracy was Joan Armatrading. You'll love her "Love And Affection" ua-cam.com/video/oag3I4VRXyM/v-deo.html , "Show Some Emotion" ua-cam.com/video/WcVgAlVSArA/v-deo.html , and many more. One of the few people I've seen in concert twice!
Excellent call!
@@laurabrevitz3944 thank you!
Joan Armatrading has some absolutely exquisite music. "Love and Affection", "Walk Under Ladders", "Someone Who Loves You", and so many more. Her music is worth every minute spent hearing it.
I recently found out that Joan Armatrading is the second voice in a Queen song that says "Don't Lose Your Head". = The title of the song as well. They happened to be in the same studio while recording their own albums.
@@helindove2237 Cool? I never knew that!
I was almost in a dance floor brawl at her concert in Dallas at the Bronco Bowl! Standing room only and I was on the dance floor and someone tried to push me off the floor.
Another great female artist! "Talking about a Revolution" is awesome too!
Her song "Talking bout a revolution" is a must listen, and still relevant.
Another Banger. I love female Fridays!
NICOLETTE LARSON
"LOTTA LOVE"💕
Great Song👏👏👍
"FEMALE FRIDAY"
My fav of hers. Simply. Wonderful
This song was released in 99 when I was 5 years old and I loved it growing up
This is my favorite. I'm glad to be hearing it. Thanks kids
Always Loved Tracy Chapman.
I love Tracy Chapmen! She has such a bluesy laid-back style in this song! I love the official video for this song too because she looks so happy and beautiful! ❤️❤️
