Quite amazing how up until 1997 or about things were relatively tame... and then they started cramming all the buttons and electronics onto them that they could. In hindsight, that 1989 wheel is like.... waaaaay ahead of it's time. Whodathunkit?
Around that time the FIA banned pit to car telemetry. So all changes were relegated to being made by the driver, by instructions from pit engineers.

Well today drivers can set brake ballance, diff balance, kers amount, engine mode and bunch of other stuff ... how is that less control?

notice i said the driver had ALL the control... driving by the seat of his pants, reading a pit box board on the way by, finessing a degrading machine to the finish, that sort of thing, You are right though, the modern driver does still ultimately push those buttons and flip them switches... and do as he's told, his machine even rats him out now when he makes a mistake. That's progress for ya ! Thanks for pointing out my weak reasoning and use of the english language. I'll try to do better when making comments from here on in.
Well, while it's true the race engineer tells the driver quite a lot regarding the health of the car, lap times, optimal strategy etc. it's still up to the driver to manage the car, tyres, fuel and produce lap times as fast as possible (ultimately faster than anyone). You can argue the driver doesn't have the same control over the car as in the past but you can't argue the driver had all the control back then. The cars back then and today are so vastly different you can't compare how they are controlled.
Modern F1 drivers are just as good drivers as the oldtimers. They are still pushing the technology they have available to the limit. That's F1 for ya!
BTW, sorry, not kers, just ers these days. My bad.
kers is essentially part of the hybrid unit that offers boost via saved energy from braking.

This video gave me _all_ the moody/optimistic feels when it came out. It really motivated me to work on my cars, and I feel like it's partly responsible for me having gone to my first track night recently.
One of the only videos ever to give me goosebumps, amazing quality and amazing soundtrack to accompany the video!

Nicely put up overall, great editing with beautiful race matching music and that glorious sound of 90s F1 beasts. I like how in late 90s the steering wheel of Schumacher was loaded with some awesome options to adjust the car's ride to your taste. And one objection here is why you guys didnt include Nikki lauda's one?
