How delightfully mercurial and ebullient
Alan Bates is. One of my very favourite actors. His “Butley” is unforgettable. Paired beautifully there with Judi Dench.

With Glenda Jackson gone, how many great English actors are left. Alan Bates' performance as Henchard in the BBC adaptation of Mayor of Casterbridge is something to see. He just commands the screen, and it must have been an exhaustive role for him to play.

I have said it before and I will say it again, while not as unscripted feeling as some Parkinson interviews feel, there is a lot to be said for Michael Aspel and how he conducts his interview, very much in that relaxed style you mention here.
