Sailing through a STORM to Haida Gwaii

  • Hi Kat! Here’s part one of my trip to Haida Gwaii where I get a reminder that the nature and the sea is scary. More to come soon.
Some other notes that didn’t make it into the video…
    Date: April 2, 2022.
The ferry I boarded was a little bit different from the ferries down in the south of the province between Vancouver and Vancouver Island. The crew of the MV Northern Adventure (the ferry between Prince Rupert and Skidegate) makes sure to pack in each ferry to the max. Staff instruct motorists to squeeze into every corner of the loading bay to fit as many vehicles as possible for the one to two sailings a week between Haida Gwaii and the mainland. It was fun to watch some people panic while being told to do some interesting maneuvering between the ship’s walls and other cars.
Also, since this ferry enters open ocean, due to some Canada ocean regulations, you can go back down to your car during the voyage (save some 10-minute windows if weather is calm to check on pets). So if you ever take this ferry, make sure to bring your snacks and warm clothes up with you.
Queen Charlotte Village is also known by it’s original Haida name Daajing Giids, which I forgot to mention in the video.
Next time we’ll visit Misty Meadows.

I live in Sandspit and travel to Rupert several times a year. Yes, sailing in rough weather is not fun. But it is all part of the adventure and is a story to tell. LOl.

Why didn't you like the city of Prince Rupert? Just curious. Thanks!

Nothing innately bad about Rupert - there lots of good things for the right kind of people. It was probably just bad timing as the pandemic was in full swing during my time there. So it was really difficult to make my way into the tight-nit community and I felt intensely isolated there.

@@normangalimski oh I see, yes the pandemic would have made it hard to be social. I only ask because my family and I are thinking of moving there from Vancouver (potential job opportunity) so I'm wondering if it's a good place to raise a family. It was nice watching your videos to get a sense of the area. Thanks!

Are you allowed to stay in your car on this ferry?
