A scene (vignette) that made a big impression on me: Grossmans' description how the mood in the German forces changes after the Soviet pincher movement that sealed the fate of the 6th Army. Before it the soldiers walk around like conquerors, after it their whole demeanor changes, with the situation gradually getting worse.

Grossman's "Stalingrad" was a genuine surprise and one of the best reads in years. (Get the Chandlers' excellent translation and definitive edition.) I was aware of "Life and Fate" but it was not in my queue, so I had the added benefit of reading the two books in the right order.
In some ways "Stalingrad" is a greater achievement in that Grossman had to pull his punches while Stalin was still alive, but somehow managed to create an equally profound work. Genius could not be suppressed by a terrified literary establishment that recognized its worth but treated it like a molten lump of metal.
