Jay: This is really dangerous, thats why im putting the grill on both sides.
Also Jay: Proceeds to experiment with the fan with no grills
i know right
That's the best part. He mentions best practices., then proceeds to ignore it. xD
From the pitch of the blades, a fan only cuts you from one side, the other side just pushes off your finger
@@rollin340 lol reminds me of an Older Linus
@@KwickDraw1 I don't know , i would not like to get a finger trapped between the leading edge of the fan and the frame that holds the motor in place at that speed and torque
I don't say this often enough: I love Phil's edits. The best parts are when he adds little After Effects animations.
Also Phil's laugh brings me such joy.
right? just pure joy is what his laugh is made of.
It's like Phil has his own reaction channel within Jayztwocents. i like it. Linus Tech Tips has the same but their back ground banter seems forced and fake.
To quote Richard Hammond: "We are, in fact, at the cutting edge of cocking about".
"we are going to put on the grill"

came here to reply this. well done!
Those kind of grills still have lots of clearances from where finger can meet the blades.
Even with grills, caution is required.

I would love to see you compare some delta fans with each other. Most of them are over a single amp like you said which makes them undesirable to me. I got some furious meltemi fans from EK because they spin at3500rpm and run at 9.3watts.

This was really funny and brings back memories of my first PC I built, was an AMD Anthlon 1Ghz with a crazy CPU fan and a fan I added to my metal side cover which was a 240V metal delta fan. The fan had it's own power separate from the PC with power switch, at LAN gaming sessions I would turn the fan off when not playing games and there would be a noticeable silence where everyone would stop to check whats happened.
Strap them on a radiator and do a comparison. Would love to see that :-)

its great to see you guys having fun like this, this entire video felt like bloopers lol
This reminded me of an incident back in the late 80s. I worked for an cargo airline in the dispatch office. One evening I answered the phone and Denver air traffic control was patching a call to us from a flight. Our captain was on the line advised he had to divert into Denver for a medical emergency and to have medical personnel standing by. Turns out the flight engineer on the flight was trying to fix a problem with his instrument panel, reached behind it, and accidentally stuck a finger into a cooling fan, taking off the tip of his finger. Since then I've had respect where electronics cooling fans are concerned.
If you want Delta fans in your case get the PWM controlled ones with the 4 pin connector. Power the fan directly from the PSU and connect the yellow and blue to the motherboard for control.
AHHH Phil dying in the background again, all is back to normal.
Love the interaction with your staff/camera guys in your videos - don't change this!
I remember back in the day, they had tornado fans that were so loud, but they were 80mm fans that could move something like 250cfm which was insane for the day. The sound still haunts me dreams...
I love how nick was actually in the back cleaning out the fan
I got 6x 1U delta fans.
They sound like literal freakin jet engines
They do, but noise is not a concern in a server room.
And it really hurts if it hits your fingers.
Still sucks though when you gotta be in the server room

Thanks Jay I needed a good laugh. This made me feel a lot better! I've been really down lately.
It is only the intake that you need to be wary of since the blades are designed to "slice" into incoming air or anything else on the input side. On the exhaust/back side, fan blades are pushing away and not really going to hurt anything any time soon
lmfao screw me for thinking this was going to be about thermals.
Same. Linus' "high airflow fans" video had thermals at the end (as you might expect, the result was "ambient"), but they had to build a custom "case" to use said fans. These could actually go in a computer case.
Maybe that's the point? Jay didn't want anyone sticking finger hazards in their system?
When you here Phil’s laugh before the video starts
"im going to use both fan guards"
Fan Guards left in the corner: was that supposed to be funny?
Delta fans have drawn blood from me on several occasions. That is how fan love starts.

Why i think that delta fans will be sell out tomorrow?
inb4 crowds crying in the fan noise and screams of cut pinkies.
@@mamuf The are commonly called "delta screamers". Because the fans are stupid loud, but I suppose if you stick your finger, or other appendages, in them you might scream too.
and 2 days later a lot of people are going the hospital bc of missing fingertips^^
@@andrewt.5567 That's the "catch". You'll ne screaming so loud no one will notice there are any fans at all.
"Not Apple compatible" HAHAA
My first experience with these kinds of fans was a Sunon 120mm with 220cfm. It was for a very small build with a 120mm radiator. It worked, and only produced around 90db ROFLMAO. I now have a 3amp Delta 120mm waiting for the right project. :)
Seeing a fan protection grill brings back memories. All computers used to have them. There was a time in the early 2000s when gamers would change the standard fan grill to one that looked like a radioactive sign or a skull or something.
Literally busted out laughing at "apparently not Apple compatible"
Hey, I've always wanted a carrot sharpener.
6:53 I've watched his reaction to the fan DEVOURING that piece of cardbord 10 times and I'm still laughing xD
I really appreciate Jay stressing safety, I feel like more tubers should when they do dangerous things
"And I'm gonna be using them for overclocking ow stuff." The most real thing Jay's said in a hot minute.
Jay: explains and shows us how dangerous the fans is and says he is going to use the grill for his own safety.
Also jay: Processed to go the entire video handling the fan without a grill and injures himself in the process.
I did one of the most stupid builds a long long time ago. I used a server case and added 6 delta fans hooked up to a potentiometer, that were individually switched, I cut out the side panel and added a perspex panel with a hole cut in for a side fan. At full speed it sounded as loud as a vacuum cleaner. I spayed the whole case a metallic blue, before I really knew how to use spray paint and it ran all down the front of the case.
That case became known as the runny Pete case, before I wrapped it in carbon fibre. Fond memories, and I still chuckle at taking it to a lan, and the guy that was sat on the table behind it had to move as it was making him cold.
I bought a Delta fan back in college to see if it would help me overclock better. It was loud enough that I stopped using the fan before the computer had even finished booting :D
4:27 Just want to let you know that everytime I see the ifixit explosion I instantly like the video.
Reminds me of these fans a friend had a long time ago called "tornado" fans. 80mm and they were stupid loud. lol
those were delta 'black label' or sunon fans I still have one
That was awesome lol! , I needed this
I have a bunch of 13W DF Storm fans in my system. I'm using PWM control and a custom power harness with its own modular 6-pin PSU connector. Is also swapped the outer frame with an RGB one. It was quite a project.
"I'm gonna put guards on both sides" *proceeds to rarely using even one grill*
Jay: I have Covid....
Phil: WELP! Me too now!
Wouldn't be surprised if he already had it as well and tested positive after Jay did
At that point might as well go back to work if you feel fine.
Or this was previously recorded
Its been 10 days since Jay started showing symptoms and quarantined, that's the recommended now
Don’t worry people at Phil and jays age only represent a decimal of COVID fatalitie. The likely hood of something bad happening is under 1% a drunk driver is more dangerous to them.
Jay tweeted he tested positive on Feb 13th, that's over 10 days ago which is the required time to isolate (at least in the UK), if this was filmed yesterday or today he would have been outside his 10 day isolation period, I wouldn't be surprised if Phil or Nick had Covid as well
I'm using a delta fan as the exhaust of my case. It's the weaker variant, 0.6A, PWM, plugged to the fan header on the motherboard. It's awesome, but of course noisy as a fighter jet. You'd have to use fan control softwares to control the noise.
Glad you're well again jay

We used only Delta Fans on data-center builds years ago. I ALWAYS put finger guards on fan's! Especially the 3,000 RPM Noctua's I use now!
On 2 to 4 Opteron 6174 MoBo server systems we built a Decade ago, we used the Noctua NH-U12DO A3 coolers with Delta 120mm Fans. They were noisy as hell! But in a noise & HVAC environmentally sealed server room.
You can get a splitter cable so you can plug the hi-amp fans into a power source (SATA or whatever) and into a MoBo fan header(or other) for control.
I have a pair of 120mm and a pair of 80mm Deltas. The 120mm ones I have are 2A, and they have directional veins instead of regular 4 spoke frame at the back.
