  • Blood clots cause serious illness and the veins of the lungs are one of the most dangerous places for a blockage to occur. When a pulmonary artery is blocked - a condition known as pulmonary embolism - symptoms can include shortness of breath, chest pain and fainting. This animation describes the risk factors, mechanisms and treatment of pulmonary embolism.

I just came back from the hospital, and the ER Dr tells me my D-Dimer is over 700 and suspects blood clot in the lungs as I complained about shortness of breath when I came in the ER for Abdo pain. My shortness of breath and heart palpation is a norm to me as I had this for over 9 years, and the family MD couldn't find out the cause, so I lived with it. This is so scary😢😢.

Sort of. It was mostly mental.
I used to play a lot of sports and knew a lot of breathing techniques. And having worked in restaurants most my life, could handle a lot of stressful situations.
So I had shortness of breath and heart palpitations before. But I chalked it all up to intense anxiety and exhaustion which some intense meditation and breathing could help restore.
Afterwards, after knowing what it was, meant I didnt have to work so hard to stay stable. So mentally it was better, but that means I felt the full brunt of it physically.
The biggest indicator for me was when i lifted something heavy at work, and instead of the anxiety feeling better, it got worse. That's when I really knew something was off.

Nail clubbing in childhood onward went undetected. Massive subacute PEs in 50s. Big heart stretch. Offered little hope for recovery, but underwent open surgery. Embolectomy. Mitral valve repair instead of planned replacement. Surprisingly great heart muscle rebound. Four years out, regular walking reduced frequency of dependence on diuretics for heart failure significantly. A lifestyle of consistent walking and nutrition protected me. I tolerate xeralto fine so far, and I take a pinch of nattokinase in the morning.

In 2003 I had my left femur absolutely crushed in a jet ski accident. After 3 separate surgeries in 3 different hospitals, I thought my next and final obstacle was just learning to walk again. Within a week, my entire leg swelled up for a day or 2. It went away, so I didn't think anything about it. After a few days, I started feeling sharp pains in my back with each breath while laying horizontal in bed. A few pillows elevated my torso slightly and the pain stopped. Fast forward to a week later and it progressed to the point where I can only sit upright, or the pain will return. Later that day the sharp pains started with every breath no matter what I did. I could only breathe very shallow breaths that still hurt, but was doable. I went to the ER, and the Dr. turned very pale while examining me. I had DVT with 7 clots Bi-PE. Laying flat on my back for the CT scan was excruciating. I spent a week in the hospital and the PE's were all dissolved. I spent 6 years on Coumadin. So far so good. Moral of the story: if you start feeling pains when you breathe, don't phuque around.

I had 9 clots causing a bilateral PE. I presented with a sore shoulder, they had a physio look and they gave me some pain killers and got me to wait in the ER waiting room. Then about half an hour later I stopped being able to breathe. I had to rush up to the counter and bang on the glass trying to convey that I couldn't breathe. The only thing that helped me was morphine as that relaxed me enough along with oxygen to be able to breathe again. I got diagnosed with thrombosis mutant gene 20210a Leiden factor 5 now on blood thinners for life, this happened 4 years ago and I'm still tired and get out of breathe easily. I should have died and may have if I didn't go to the hospital thinking I hurt my shoulder. I think hospital staff need to be more mindful of DVT and PE when people present as it gets missed a lot and leads to a lot if deaths.

Tell me about it. A cardiologist gave me Omeprazol because he thought I had heartburn. A pulmonologist told me my back problems were causing breathing problems! What a bunch of boneheads! I had a bad attack, felt like asthma combined with a heart attack or something, drove myself to the ER, and guess what the diagnosis was? Multiple bilateral pulmonary embolisms. Now I'm on Xarelto, probably for life. Damn expensive drug! Now they want to do all these tests to try to figure out why I'm a "clotter". Another chest CT-scan this coming August, ultrasound of legs, echocardiogram, and yeah...they found I have a mutated Leiden factor gene. Forgot the number...Leiden factor 10? Or Leiden factor 5? Well, whatever it is, it basically means I have a bad tendency to clot unnecessarily. When I was younger I exercised so much that the exercise probably helped counteract it. But as I've got older and more sedentary (and some arthritis too), I'm much less active, although still walk my dog a couple miles every day, and that lack of activity combined with the genetic mutation is a bad, dangerous combination. I will say this however. I think it's VERY IMPORTANT to get as much exercise as you can handle, because just sitting around all day makes these a lot worse. Also, don't forget those compression stockings! Yeah, a pain in the ass to put on and take off, and I confess I don't wear them every day like I should, but they are supposed to help prevent DVT's in the legs...because usually that's where pulmonary embolisms get started. They usually begin in the legs. (But not always.)

Was difficult to get an accurate diagnosis but thankful eventually got it. On blood thinners for next 6 months. I am praying for all of you herein. I know it is utterly frustrating this condition, but could be worse, as Acute PE can snatch a good life away just like that. Be blessed all🙏🏾

Now on injections and blood thinners every day. I don't need prayers or belief, I just need to thank my country for the NHS. @@fibonacci5957 from night befor , I was coughing and i couldn't breathe, so i went to emergency and the Dr there told me that I'm fine ( even though i , myself could hear the wheezing and my heartbeat fastening) so he prescribed me some medications. I went back and took my medications and after some time I started vomiting. I vomited all night and I couldn't sleep. I couldn't lay down, I was in so much pain but i continued to take my inhalers. In the morning, I was weak and trembling I couldn't even sit properly without any support and that's where the real thing started. Suddenly I felt as if someone was choking me and I couldn't hold it anymore, I fell to the floor, my parents called ambulance and they came checked my heartbeat and it was HIGH, I thing something like 205. I was in the ambulance when i heard the speaker , the dr telling the ambulance crew to come as fast as they can . The man in the ambulance said that i won't make it to the hospital but gladly I did. After i reached the hospital i went unconscious for i think 10 hours. I woke up feeling as if I'm falling into a dark deep depth. My Dr came and she told me that it was a miracle that i survived because my both lungs were totally shut because of blood clots , i was weak and couldn't even move my body and speak so she helped me drink some water, after drinking water I started vomiting again and went unconscious. So they discharged me after 5 days, Prescribed me like 14 medicines, and told me to rest at home and take small walks for 2 months.

I had this last year. Said I got lucky because a big clot went from my leg to my lungs. And broke apart. If it hadnt I would have died.
Started on eliquis but then put me on xeralto.
I work in a restaurant and couldn't get time off. Not because of work, but because of my bills.
    Suffering all the time.
    I'm not 100% from before.
But it does get better. The weight your carrying will eventually lift off.
Stay mobile, stay active where you can at least.
Also, compression socks help a lot. Seriously. They are expensive, but worth it.

Could not bend knee. No chest pain or breathlessness at all but felt ill and had a feeling of impending doom. Had slight shortness of breath for the week prior upon exertion. 3 weeks in now.

*i was just diagnosed with this 4 days ago. Severe back pain sent me to the ER. I thought it was Kidney stones, turns out is was multiple pulmonary embolisms In BOTH lungs. My treatment began immediately with heparin and i was sent home in 2 days on Eliquis. I originally wasn't giving anything for the pain management and had to go back to the ER. The pain is like something i cant describe, i would take anything from anyone whole going through the immense pain. Now i have a prescription for Toradol which is basically codeine in a pill form. A little about me im 42, extremely healthy, run 15-20 miles per week for ths last 15 years or so. No other health conditions once so ever. in fact i would consider my self in the upper 10% health wise especially in my age group. The doctors have no clue how i got these and the best they can say is long flights. All i can say is if you think you may have clots, go to the ER, demand a "Dimer" blood test and a CT scan with contrast. If i wouldn't have had that pain, i wouldnt have had any chance. Any questions or advice please contact me*

I was in the hospital last month. I drove myself to the ER because while walking my dog I suddenly couldn't breathe (or couldn't breathe deeply), had chest pain, was sweating badly, and basically thought I was having a heart attack. They ran tests, did a CT-scan of my chest, and guess what they found? The diagnosis was multiple bilateral pulmonary embolisms. Geesh! They gave me a Heparin drip for about a day or so. Then Lovenox injections for the next two days, and then switched me over to Xarelto, 30 mg a day for three weeks, and now 20 mg a day, which I'll probably have to take for the rest of my life. Scary stuff for sure! I'm happy that 1) I didn't just drop dead!!!, and 2) Some PE patients have to get ventilated. Thankfully, I was stable enough that they didn't have to do that, but I was kept under careful observation for 4 days in the hospital, and mandatory bedrest for the first day. Now I've got all these appointments with a hematologist and vascular specialist to try to find the cause of the problem. So far, they think it's genetic, and that I basically have a blood disorder that makes me predisposed to unnecessary blood clotting. Oh yeah, and by the way...if your insurance isn't that great and doesn't cover Tier 3 drugs, watch out! Xarelto is super expensive. I had to pay $300 for the first 3-week supply of the drug, and then $1,450 for the next prescription, which was for 20 mg of Xarelto per day, for 90 days!!! How many people can afford that? What is wrong with healthcare in the United States? I'm not asking for a mansion or a Rolls Royce! I'm just asking for a medication that I need so that I can maybe live another 20 years!!!! Am I asking too much of the system? I guess I am!

We don’t know the exact details on how this occurred , but I had to switch my birth control 3 TIMES because there was a supply issue in Sweden last year. That is what’s speculated caused this to happen. Think the most haunting thing was when I asked the doctor how long I could have gone with this unnoticed, he deadass said “Another week with this unnoticed and it would have been fatal”. Apparently the blood-clot was huge ! Got two shots of anticoagulant medicine right in my stomach and it hurt like hell. Currently on a high dose of Xarelto and I have to wear a necklace stating that I’m taking anticoagulants ( in case a accident occurs where I’d need surgery etc ).

They kept me in for a week but i was ok after they gave me fragmin. I had to inject fragmin for 1 year and now i choose nothing. I think unhealthy lifestyle led to it so i got a dog and go out walking now. I think i will be ok. You survived and will get stronger im sure. I wish you a healthy recovery. i accept my choices for not taking the meds because they make me feel ill, everyone should make their own choices.
Look into vitamin supplements and start juicing if you can. I had beetroot juices and every kind of juicr everyday with ginger. I was the same as you literally 3/4 of my lungs was clots and somehow i was still walking and talking but could only walk for a min without feeling like i had ran a marathon at sprinting pace. They told me when i got to the hospital that they thought i had a tear in my aorta which was scary to hear but i got better and so will you. A good routine is to get a stationary electric bike and then work your heart rate up and down for 15-20 and get that blood flowing! Yoga 'morning salutation' is great routine as well when you do it a few times. Good luck and i wish you a strong and healthy recovery. If you need any support leave a comment here

@@forexscamfinder4639 it's really nice to hear stories about similar experiences. You're absolutely right, it's good to be healthier. @@youtubeadmin1451 that's my symptoms to the T! I'm surprised he said push through it, to my understanding the occlusion causes a degree of pulmonary hypertension (due to diminished blood flow), this causes "right heart strain" and over time causes hypertension in the right atria which ultimately leads to heart failure :O, but maybe I've been reading too much! Well I've felt like that many times, especially week 3, that's when I went my chest was going to explode from pain and swelling and unilateral edema on the left side, getting a ct with contrast so here's hoping I haven't lost too much lung tissue
