Does anyone else think that this looks like a high quality video game character? Like it has too many details and there's just something off about the eyes? Or is it just me?
No, there are things off, though the overall effect is truly groundbreaking. The eyes and other facial muscles utilize saccades, decay effects and muscular variances which are essentially involuntary neurological twitches. These small, usually unnoticed tics give facial expressions and eye movements authenticity. It is but a small logorhyrthmic matter of creating additional subroutines which string sequentially off those that have already been created to add this crucial, tiny alteration. They are, effectively, the ghost in the machine.
Funny you mention that: When the Romans carved their statues they carved them with flaws and with imperfections because it was the real human form, while the Greeks did their statues flawlessly and without any blemish for they only saw what humans *could* and *should* be like. Kinda funny how thats happening nowadays but between Japan and US/UK.
He even has nose hairs! Yeah, that would be funny to put on UA-cam ... People's spontaneous reactions to what they think is an animatronic puppet (but someone impersonating a anitmatronic puppet) who says or does, perhaps inappropriate things?
To me, same as with Lincoln, the movements are actually too smooth. It's certainly lifelike and the sculpt looks amazing, but humans move in a much less smooth way. I think that developing more sudden, jagged movements that humans have (including blinking, which is very fast compared to what animatronics really do). A good example of this movement is at 1:46. Small, sudden movements are what does it for being lifelike, I think. I don't know if the technology is good enough yet for sudden movements to be possible (or even lips that can extend horizontally forwards for a better whistling pose), but it's really getting there.
l think the hardware is nearly usable yet, just a few little HW-adjustments and some innovative program-code and we have some Westworld like animatronics. The biggest Problem i see, would be the face to face touring-test.
It appears to be capable of doing more realistic motion but is doing a sort of demo mode of gurns to show what it can do, some of which isn’t possible by humans. If they motion captured an actual actor and applied that to it, it looks like it could manage to reproduce it ok, to me.
failogy Sophia isn't an animatronic. She's an ai. This thing just does what it's programmed to do, Sophia is artificial intelligence. Massive difference. Like comparing real fruit to fake fruit.
Captain Captain they should put all the processing stuff from Sophia into the torso of this so it all fits and not only would you have an Ai but an amazing animatronic
TheShockinglyEloquentDog woof Sophia isn’t that impressive. She’s basically a “glorified chat bot” as others have called her. Her creators try to put her in situations that make her seem smarter than she really is
The model is fantastic, especially the care taken on the hair and teeth. We had similar problems just animating facial expressions without the headaches of mechanical limitations. My team studied “micro expressions “ and that improved our quality significantly. The first cinematic example I can think of where micro expressions were used successfully was Golem in Lord of the rings. I don’t know hardware but it seems to me that it would be a near impossibility to get that small of movement that quickly. Love this character and would love to see it in a performance somewhere.
Westworld, here we come. I keep thinking, what if all the different companies combined their efforts. They won't, of course, but just imagine. Our current best AI's, inside Hondas Asimo, and technology like this for realism. Still nowhere close to actually fooling other humans, but we can certainly see we're getting there. Wild guess and speculation; By 2050 we'll have humanoid robots that, at least in confined spaces and settings, will be practically indistinguishable from the real thing.
i feel like its a pretty big disadvantage to be bipedal for a robot, dont you think they are gonna make them more shaped like the 4 legged boston dynamics robits
As a mechanical engineering major I'd definitely love to see a video talking about the team that worked on creating this amazing animatronic. I bet they are the best of the best with an incredible work ethic. It is my dream job and is inspiring to see the advances in technology and where my major can take me. (Shout out to Disney World for igniting my intense curiosity with the physics of roller coasters and animatronics)
Just nice to see things advancing. Not there yet but very cool. The laugh, and some mico expressions with blinks and sniffing after the sneeze was pretty good.
It..... It's crossed from looking like a well done real life animatronic to a really poorly but extremely well textured videogame charactor..... That's actually amazing
EVERY look it has is like the most intense look someone would give. Also needs to be way more fluid IMO. but still something I would never be able to pull off, so kudos!
Great work! I'm sure if you can express it to say "Dilly Dilly", the Budweiser company would scoop that right up! Thank you for keeping the magic alive, Mr. Holt!
This is a truly impressive machine, and I'm pleasantly surprised how its not nearly as uncanny as most of these animatronics. Though he looks like he's a bit too pleased with himself...
it looks animated. So if this is actually a built machine then they did an insanely Good job in making it look smooth and past the uncanny valley, but the problem is it looks like im looking at a 3d animation with how smooth it is, which is a marvel compared to how other machines working towards the same goal being so stiff that its really creepy. This one just needs a tiny bit more imperfection in its design. More knee jerk reactions to it. The eyes being the biggest giveaway being how slow they blink.
While this certainly is very VERY good - it is said that it takes very little visual information for a human being to recognize another human being (a monster movie with a human in a suit is almost always recognizable as just that). The same is true in reverse, it takes very little visual information to notice when something is "off" (CGI Leia & Tarkin in 'Rogue One' comes to mind). Like I said, this is very good, but something is just "off" about it.
You can still tell it is animatronic. However, damn that is impressive as hell how close it is to looking human. All we need is genuine AI and we will have our robot masters in control. lol
Thing is this looks like a video game character, an animatronic, and the worst part, a real human, all at once. This is so realistic with just a touch of imperfection. When he made the sad face, I felt REAL EMPATHY. I could tell he was in like some kind of pain, and to be honest, it scares me that for the first time, something fake has made me feel like it felt actual pain. ..wait *What did you do to that robot?*
It is amazing ,very detailed and entertaining, but still in the Uncanny Valley.i think one day these engineers and cgi will crack it though. Its getting there.
This is absolutely incredible, but there is just *something* about that figure that I can't put my finger on, but it upsets me about how real and also how not real this man looks lol
Good for one-of-a-kind and short-runs... The real test quality is to see it can run frequently without breaking down. The skin is realistic and forms well... how does it hold up over time? ... will the skin eventually dry up...or "Oil Up"? You know what I mean?
Does anyone else think that this looks like a high quality video game character? Like it has too many details and there's just something off about the eyes? Or is it just me?
It's the nose for me.
My god. We've hit the uncanny valley of the uncanny valley
The pupils don't change size when the lightangle changes. But be fair. It's really good
He does

I like that they gave him imperfections unlike the Japanese versions.
thats what makes him way less creepy
It makes him seem like an actual person or character because of it.
Funny you mention that:

Robert Pirlot That's what makes the Japanese robots creepy. They look like people, but at the same time, they look too perfect.
It would be funny if this was actually a real person and they just fooled us into thinking it was a robot lol
Looks almost like very high quality CGI
Laura Legends Great, now I have watch it again...
He even has nose hairs! Yeah, that would be funny to put on UA-cam ... People's spontaneous reactions to what they think is an animatronic puppet (but someone impersonating a anitmatronic puppet) who says or does, perhaps inappropriate things?
This looks like a 3D animation
Alex Ace I said the same thing lol..... I'm glad I'm not the only one
Is a machine
The way it moves looks like 3d animation!
Check out the Lincoln on Tested, it's real :)
@@boogynights I agree.

Lumibear
Wouldn't the demo mode on a life like animatronic humanoid robot be to show how lifelike it is? That's the whole point.
when his mouth is open you can see the mechanisms inside
Looks like a real life Sims character. The expressions are nearly there but they just look a little unnatural especially when he smiles wide.
Looks like it should be on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland
1:56 Somebody's having a good time
This animatronic should be more famous than Sophia.
Agreed. Sophia is a creepy wirehead.
failogy well Sophia is impressive because she's an AI not necessarily because of how she looks
failogy Sophia isn't an animatronic. She's an ai. This thing just does what it's programmed to do, Sophia is artificial intelligence. Massive difference. Like comparing real fruit to fake fruit.

I'll buy five.... Can you make it look like me? Sit behind a desk and sign a time card at the end of the day?
hahhahaha😂😂😂
So, you do nothing all day? :p
He also makes funny faces and says "arr" occasionally.
There would be people saying androids are stealing jobs.
Westworld. The beginning
My thoughts exactly
straight into the uncanny valley
Not quite. Too realistic to be uncanny.
Nah it's a good thing
Looks like a video game character
Thanks for the nightmares

This is really impressive! I'd really like to see this used in a show or amusement park ride sometime!
Showbiz CEC Disney Hall of Presidents.
1:11 when your crush walks by.
Jesus! He even has nose hairs!
Wow it looks like an animation or something
Dreamy Cloud I know right! I was thinking the same thing!
That's because it is a form of animation.
Dreamy Cloud Animatronics are a form of puppetry which in turn is a form of animation.
looks more realistic that me!
Than*
I think more tongue motion might help but holy crap guys great work, really unbelievable.

I'll bet a LOT sooner than 2050!

Extremely creapy, but also quite amazing.
Looks like a really good animated character
So expressive robot...like it..! Good job 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
This is beautiful in its own right
Very impressive... doesn’t quite cross the uncanny valley like some CGI has (the Unreal Engine demo with Siren), but very impressive indeed...
wow he looks animated that's incredible
it looks hella real.
its just the way it moves.
the way it moves is too... robotic.
Just nice to see things advancing. Not there yet but very cool. The laugh, and some mico expressions with blinks and sniffing after the sneeze was pretty good.
It..... It's crossed from looking like a well done real life animatronic to a really poorly but extremely well textured videogame charactor..... That's actually amazing
wow, the detailed features and movements are brilliant! ❤️
one word IMPRESSIVE
This is ridiculously impressive! Scott Cawthon should get them to work on the FNAF movie, if it hasn't been cancelled
Epic! This video totally should have been at 60 FPS!
Dude looks like he stepped out of a video game.
EVERY look it has is like the most intense look someone would give. Also needs to be way more fluid IMO. but still something I would never be able to pull off, so kudos!
I want a movie with animatronic puppets like this!
It movies to fluidly. It just feels like a really well done 3d animation
He's supposed to look cartoony though since he is an animatronic.
Wow. Besides the movement locks and the middle of the mouth, this is starting to look pretty convincing.
I like that the robot is so expressive and cartoony, it didn't leap into the uncanny valley
Straight out of a Charles Dickens Novel! Love it!
Great work! I'm sure if you can express it to say "Dilly Dilly", the Budweiser company would scoop that right up! Thank you for keeping the magic alive, Mr. Holt!
This technique can be sooo good.
Looks like a cross between Lincoln's head and The Auctioneer's head.
This is a truly impressive machine, and I'm pleasantly surprised how its not nearly as uncanny as most of these animatronics. Though he looks like he's a bit too pleased with himself...
This robot should be a main character for a western game
Fuc I can't wait for the day these robots walk amongst us and we find it hard to tell if there human or not, hope it happens in my lifetime
Awesome! Way better than Pirates Of The Caribbean!
Woah! This is just... *a m a z i n g*
That is freaky and unbelievable. It's basically just like the android in the movie Alien.
OH MAH GOSH AMAZING!!!!
Neil Patrick Harris looks so good here.
This is some uncanny valley shit right here. Did not need to stumble onto this before bed...
April 21, 2018----Damn, this is impressive. Thanks for the video.
I was going to say something funny, but this is actually better than what they did with Superman in Justice League.
OH MY GOSH I WON'T SLEEP TONIGHT 😱
I find it amusing that the most realistic android face I've seen so far resembles a 19th century Bedlum patient lol.
This is really good....creepy, but nonetheless very clever....
Me when I try to take a selfie.
I like how his mouth moved when he made the nose sniffling sound
Amazing work👏
is it creepy to say i want to see what's under his skin? i'm impressed and curious too see in better detail how all this was accomplished.
Imagine in 100 years Hollywood won’t have to pay actors millions for a movie role because they can just make their own actors
I have to say it moves so realistic
it looks animated. So if this is actually a built machine then they did an insanely Good job in making it look smooth and past the uncanny valley, but the problem is it looks like im looking at a 3d animation with how smooth it is, which is a marvel compared to how other machines working towards the same goal being so stiff that its really creepy. Terminator when?
the nose hair was a nice touch

*What did you do to that robot?*
Wow even down to the chapped lips!
The closest thing to a real life CGI human the world has to offer for now
It is amazing ,very detailed and entertaining, but still in the Uncanny Valley.i think one day these engineers and cgi will crack it though. Its getting there.
This is absolutely incredible, but there is just *something* about that figure that I can't put my finger on, but it upsets me about how real and also how not real this man looks lol
DIVE RIGHT INTO THE UNCANNY VALLEY! WOOHOO!
It was very realistic
It's hard to believe this is real it looks like an animation
When its eyes are closed it looks real
That's quite a repertoire. Westwood is real! Take cover!
Creepy as hell 🎃

Hello, uncanny valley. We are almost cross.
It's the lazy eye and yellow teeth, that goes a long way 'humanizing' an animatronic .
This isn't animatronics, this is a render.
Looks like a character in a Civilization Revolution game
Wow!! That was really impressive!! You have a new subscriber to your channel. :-) Do you have any video demonstration on dinosaur animatronics? ☺
Now mix animatronics with robotic technology and you get WEST WORLD
Do Shakespeare and Da Vinci pls!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah... it looks very human
Robo-Guy could play a bit character in a Western. Cheers!
I would have named this"Dickens' Character."
First one I've seen that can blink without moving it's eyebrows.
The only thing missing is the nose crinkling or stretching with the expressions, like the sneeze. Other than that, it's so close.
This is what's replacing us folks. Have a nice long look at it.
So even androids can't afford a good set of teeth! 😂
So amazing!
