  • Here's a teaser with four highlights from a busy day out at Fantasy of Flight. Kermit Weeks tested the engines on the Fokker Triplane and Fokker D-VIII, and also took to the sky with both the Albatros D. Va and the Sikorsky S-39. It's always exciting out at Fantasy of Flight, but things were a bit more that day... got a little hot there too for a moment or so.

    Kermit was working furiously to untie the tail wheel to drag the thing back from the burning gas pool under the undercarriage. Perhaps a quick disconnect is in the future for engine tests.

    Wow! Glad they were on top of it. Could have been really bad. Sad we didn't get to see and hear it run up, Those spinning radials are probably my favorite engines, They're mad but somehow quite elegant.

    The plane is a reproduction (almost all German fighters were destroyed under terms of the Armistice) but the engine's original.

    Brings to mind how easy it can happen. I remember fuel gauges on _________ Airlines 402 Cessna's leaking onto the King silver series radios and killing the radios. How we didnt have a fire, i will never understand, but happy it didnt happen. Check everything, then check it again, then have somebody else check it.

    The gentleman in the shades kind of dropped the ball being parked on his butt with the fire extinguisher clamped down! Lol. I can't blame him for his lack of worry, though. Every time I see a video from Fantasy of Flight those birds seem to start like they are brand new. Is that the way it really is, or are mishaps like these more common?

    Wonderfull!! I was at fantasy of Flight a few weeks ago with my family. I took a ride on a yellow bi-plane (what was the name again?), together with Rob, a very professional en tall pilot how gave me a quick flying lesson, that was really awesome. I actually piloted the plane for about 10 minutes, i will never forget the lacy ace that i did. Thanx Rob, greetings from Al from the Netherland!

      Yeah, but blasting Co2 up in the air at the flame doesn't cut it. First rule of fire fighting is: always shoot as close to the base of the fire as you can to deprive the fuel from incoming Oxygen.

    The tail tiedown could use an update on that D-7. The plane could have been totally involved before Kermit got it undone. Beautiful aircraft.

      Your name can have loads of monetary value, but personally you can be broke at the same time. I worked for a guy that owned a major Plumbing and Mechanical company, he lived in a gated community, drove wonderful cars and had it made. He went to buy a truck one day and could not get it financed in his own name, because he used the company name for so many years, he had no credit..
      I guess what im saying is Kermit is as my father would say "well Healed", but it doesnt mean he has money to burn...

    I Thought the DRI had a fully rotational rotary engine

    • @TheSkipjack95
      @TheSkipjack95 9 років тому

      Callum Jerwood It did, but nowadays it's hard to find rotary engines, so many replicas use more modern radials.

      That must make it easier to fly, with so much less torque.
