Will has done good work, this is not his year and it is not racist to give the Oscar to the greatest performance of a lifetime.
Is it only me but I thought Phil had a sad almost pathetic underlayer? Yes he was mean, but nothing on screen warranted for him to be murdered, especially with cold precise premeditation. I think the movie was actually more about the birth of a psychopath. The young man, from the start, had a aloofness about him ( not talking about his sexuality) the way he handled the rabbit, the scalpels, when he recalled his father telling him he was not a very nice person shortly before killing himself…I think it was all a game to him, and helping his mother was just his mental justification! Anyone else with me?
Heck, I actually have no idea what the darn movie was about. It had beautiful camera angles and wonderful performances. It went by like a flash. Maybe I was stoned?? But I agree with you. The other characters didn't seem to know where that very thin line between good and evil lay.
Phil was rough around the edges but the “nice” people weren’t sure how to handle him. The son had an opportunity to peel away the layers but chose murder instead. The mother bottled up negative emotions and chose to drink, Phil didn’t make her do that and he didn’t want to see her become a drunk. The brother had an opportunity to bridge the relationships to get both sides to a place where they can tolerate each other. Maybe this story made more sense for the time period I guess.
Actually the subtle power pivot that takes place between Phillip and Peter is one of the key themes of this film and is superbly executed by both Cumberbacht and McFee.
I first saw Benedict in a couple of episodes of a TV drama where he played this rich, entitled man who believed the law did not apply to him and then Sherlock came along and I was addicted to anything he was in! What is amazing is that you might start watching something because he is in it but it doesn't take long to forget that you are watching the same actor in all of these roles! I haven't watched this film yet as I wasn't sure I wanted to watch a character so hateful but it sounds as though there is more complexity to him and just watching these few clips show that Benedict has done it again and it isn't grotesque violence for the sake of grotesque violence.
The very first thing i saw Benedict in was the BBC docudrama about Dunkirk. episode 3 deliverance. His acting then was in a league of it's own and no wonder the big studios snapped this English actor up. Everything he plays in or stars in he's adaptable to any role. Should be given a chance at 007 He'd make a great James Bond.

I think he would be a great bond, but I don't think he would want it. Stuck in the same role year after year, you can't just do one Bond film. Cumberbatch is very versatile and takes on a lot of varied characters.
Benedict certainly deserves his praise. However, there’s something about the way Jesse Plemmons (George) carries himself in scenes that makes it hard to tear your eyes away. He’s captivating. His movements and the way his eyes say everything without any grand speech could be taught in a drama course.
If he wasn't so stiff and closeted, Phil may've gotten along well with Rose. The scene where he played the banjo to mess with Rose while she played piano could've taken a much happier tone if so.
Agree with others who point out that Phil is never physical. His brother tolerates him and treats him as though he understands why he is so miserable. The brother's non-reaction to "fatso" and other barbs comes off as a kind of pity or sympathy. George is like a cop dealing with an unstable perp -- he doesn't really back down but he doesn't seem as intimidated as many reviews of this film imply. He is quietly powerful and maneuvers his way around the confrontation his brother seeks. This scene is an example of the non-confrontation -- he doesn't refuse the toast to Bronco Henry but he doesn't drink much. You almost expect Phil to demand that he drink but it seems to go unnoticed. It fits with many other equivocal moments in the storytelling.

@Wes & TKP 66-02 Respectfully disagree; both men were practicing bisexual in their behaviours, but both men were homosexual in their sexual inclination. The price of concealing one's true sexuality has been for many, throughout history, to act as if they were not homosexual because to reveal that truth would have been social ostracism or worse.
I grew up in Florida around cattle ranching families, none of this is new to me. It's simple, Bronco Henry raped the little brother, who is caught between his shame of the event, and his brother's disdain for his submission to the man, and his own shame for not intervening to protect his weaker little brother. I hqven't seen the movie, but I know the story, it's a common one in cultures that disdain vulnerability.
Phil goes from having all the power over his brother; to fighting to keep it and his masculinity in tact in front of his friends. He underestimated Peter, even felt sorry for him towards the end. Even started having a soft spot for Peter before Peter murdered him. Shits wild honestly
OK. For me, it was not the pace of the movie. It was not the subject matter. It was boring, in my opinion. The film disappointed me in other ways, but I'll keep this short. Best thing about this movie is the way it ended. Nice "twist".

Yeah I know Cumberbatch said the way Phil was acting was abusive, and I do agree with that, but I just for some reason can’t get out of my head that Rose overreacted to it. I know abuse victims sometimes don’t know how to leave their environment and each victim is different , but maybe it’s just the abuse that was shown towards Rose was somewhat lacking. We saw some of his cruelty towards her, but I don’t feel like I saw enough for her to be genuinely terrified of him, maybe just really dislike being around him.
@@cakecrumb095 She wasn't just tormented by Phil. She told George over and over she couldn't play the piano. The piano in her place was a player piano. What does George do? He buys that baby grand and to introduce her to his parents for the first time, invites the freaking Govenor and demands that she play that piano thus humiliating her. Then the drinks are forced on her that night. It was like a rape. Who is business manager for the ranch? George! George is buying all the booze. Hey, he knows what Phil is. Letting Phil have Rose and Peter, gets him off his back. George drives off every Sunday night, leaving her alone with his tormentor.
@@bonniesteele1563 that’s what I was thinking.
@@cakecrumb095 YES!! I TOTALLY AGREE. TO BE HONEST THE WORST THING HE DID WAS HITTING A HORSE IN ONE SCENE . I REMEMBER GETTING SO MAD AT THAT.THE REST IS JUST VERBAL ABUSE
The Boy is who delivered the fantastic performances. That last scene was just amazing. I can still see his face. Understated brilliance from. Beginning to end. Mr McFee is who should get the award.. for the last scene alone.
Benedict Cumberbatch earned his Oscar nomination in this film. So did Kodi Smit Mcphee.... I don't know that the others did so much. They weren't bad, they just weren't what I would consider Oscar worthy. Cumberatch though... he's in a league of his own here. Best I have seen of him so far.
This is a horrifying movie on many levels!
Good casting all the way around but a cruel film. Gave me the chills!
Is no one going to talk about how awful his accent is in this movie? Not sure what he was going for, but it sure wasn't working.
I’m a big western fan but this movie didn’t do it for me
you can hear the accent falling apart slightly. it also sounds monotone and boring
Sam Elliot HATED IT!
So did I!!!
I just felt so bad for him
Love Ben,Kirstin,etc,so overrated,and not a true cowboy movie,was he ever riding a horse,not really,movie is a mess
This is a horrible movie. I wanted to take a shower when it was over.
My Sherlock ❤️🥰
Strange movie, worth the watch. Apparently there are a lot of gay cowboys in Montana. It must get lonely on the prairie.
That's a disappointing piece of reductionism. You mean, if Burbank had been straight, his treatment of Rose would've been okay?
@@mcmanpa you really dissected this movie. It was just a story. I didn't put that much thought into it.
Gay, straight, not issue. Peter just uses the issue. He kills the bastard tormenting his mom, and in the book, caused his father's suicide.
@@bonniesteele1563 I think you are right. His dad said he was too hard, tuff and he was, more than people new.
Cumberbatch deserved to win the Oscar.
Fantastic actor
LOL This movie su-ucked
I can see "Rawhide" will be remade with a Brokeback mountain theme.
I think Phil was the older brother though.
Very odd film but the ending was unexpected.
and the Oscar should have gone to.....
*_Go look up what Sam Elliott said about the movie.OH MY!!_*
Kind of have it wrong. You better be tough if you want to stay alive. Those cattle and the bison are kind of big. Those trees for keeping warm in winter are kind of big. Rustlers have bullets that are kind of big. Indians have arrows that are kind of big. Hunger is a gnawing that is kind of big. The work doesn't get done by kind of big barn raisings. Ain't no one around to care. It's just a British exhibition.
