This is why Larry Bird is the best ever. Would James have played injured like that. No way in hell!!!!

Bird was more committed to playing if he could more than any other NBA player in history.
We have seen the highlight in the 1991 playoffs where Bird dives after a ball and slams his face into the court needing to leave the game but he came back and led the Celtics to victory.
That happened in Birds next to last season. Everyone knew how bad his back was and if he had not dove for the ball nobody would have said anything and then he came back out with a broken face bone and concussion to lead the Celtics to the win.
However, people don't realize how incredible that was because what happened before that is left out.
The 4th game of the series against the Pacers, which the Pacers won to tie the series at 2, was played on May 3rd. The 5th and deciding game was played on May 5th. On May 4th, Bird spent the night in the hospital in traction because his back was so bad.
So to sum up what happened.
Bird's back was so bad he spent a night in the hospital and then played in a game where he slammed his face into the floor, which broke and bone and gave him a concussion and then he came back from that to lead the Celtics to a win.
That is why Bird is a legend and maybe the best players ever.
No load management, no excuses. If he was going to play in a game he was giving everything he had all the time - to paraphrase Bird - If you get paid to go to work, you go to work . Bird did it even if he was injured.

He is one determined person. Not very many would play with those types of injuries and as someone else has said below, he also played after having his toe cut into. Toes hurt. I have had injections into mine and I thought that was exceptionally painful. Can't imagine putting on a shoe and going out to run all over the place.

There was another time where Bird had a toe infection. They made a two inch incession on his toe, the trainer was going to give Bird a shot for the pain and Bird said no just get me a beer. He played later that night.

Had a very high tolerance for pain. In high school he broke his leg, which was only taped up. Later on a cast.

These 5 stories just scratch the surface of his toughness. I know of *at least* 3 other times he toughed it out with facial fractures - plus other injuries that occurred throughout his career. Larry Legend is THE toughest player.

Larry Bird played 82 games with a back that would make almost everyone else retire. Here we are with players today complaining about playing 65.
If you enjoy Larry Bird you should check out pistol pete. Watch his college highlights. He was the innovator of most of the moves you see by players today.

Bird played every game as if it was the seventh game of a championship series. Another reason why he didn't last too long. But peak for peak, there aren't many players better than him.

Also what many dont know is Larry played the last part of his career in a back brace - and while not as agile he still got the job done.

I feel like young folk dont realize how little money they made back then. Bird and Magic were making low 7 figures on their contract and they saved the league. Even the advertisement and licensing contracts back then weren't MJ level.
Bird never broke even 3 million on contract with the Celtics and that was crazy money back then. The culture is very different
P.S. this wasnt directed at you. Just a general comment about how the league has changed so much and a lot of young folk dismiss the old greats or mock them.

There’s a video on the history of the NBA that should be required viewing for anyone who reacts to anything regarding an era from before their time. It’s human nature to look at the past in the context of how things are in the present. We all do it to an extent about different things.

One thing there’s no way you could know is that when Bird broke his face on the floor against the Pacers and went to the locker room for treatment, we thought we’d never see him again. He’d been in terrible pain, his contract was up, and we thought he’d retire at the end of the season, and it sure looked like it was the end of the season. Then he came back in the game and everyone knew he had a concussion, won, and then he played one more season.

2:10 I cannot recommend enough the book she wrote with Bird and Magic, When The Game Was Ours. It’s kinda dry but it does a good job of putting their story in the context of the social climate of the time. Also, this complete interview is available on UA-cam for anyone who’s interested.

This doesn’t even cover the worst in game injury. In ‘82 Larry caught an elbow to the face from Harvey Catchings. I think it looked intentional. Anyway it actually caused a depression, it fractured the zygomatic bone in his left cheek. He actually finished the game and had to go directly to the hospital after. They had to drill a hole in his face to pop it back out. I can’t imagine the pain, the guy’s an animal. 🤯

If I'm not mistaken... He actually got drafted the year before the year he played Magic for the NCAA title. He came back for his last year and got that story book take from that year.

If he hadn’t been injured, I bet he’d of played another 10 years at least. As far as rings, one man can’t do it on his own so I couldn’t guess.
Edit: that’s some seriously chill music at the end. Nice.
