I'm glad you are getting into boomer music early in life. Keep up the good work you little whipper snapper, and the old bastards will never get you. They may take away all your health care and retirement money, but you will always have the music in you.
It's like eating way too many slices of pizza. You never say no to more slices like you never say no to more great music. Too much of a good thing is never bad.
As Billy Corgan said, Pink Floyd are the ultimate anomaly in rock music. They were/are very popular, but they barely released singles; they created long pieces of music like this one; you really didn't know much about them as people; the lyrics Roger wrote were about grief, loss, lack of communication, alienation, power, rock n roll itself, madness, war, death, space - most of these themes you didn't encounter that often in rock music. But it worked, it clicked with so many people, and it still does to this day with people from all ages listening to them.
+Timothy Cole The subject matters touched on by this band (those which you mentioned) remind me of the classic metaphysical poets, though religion and sexuality seemed to play a more prominent role with the poets. At least, the ethereal mystique of space and death, the abstract from the specific, strike me as similar. With a more direct, yet equally elegant lyrical approach, the alternate medium Pink Floyd uses, music, offers a different texture which I believe well-describes what those authors wanted to arouse in their audiences.
+Timothy Cole Absolute masters of what they do. Muse are similar, probably the closest thing to Floyd in the best part of a 50 year span - just shows how unique and untouchable their quality and vision was
+Timothy Cole The band members weren't interested in doing interviews. Most of the band members were more into booze (than drugs), Syd Barrett being the exception. And back in the day the only member of the band who was ever seen in clubs, pubs, checking out the London music scene etc...was David Gilmour. The only other British Rock band (from that era) I can think of who maintained an equally low profile / circle of silence around them was Supertramp. Maybe Foghat.
Sorry for your loss. I lost my mum on April 7, 1986. I feel your pain. Be strong, the way she taught you to be, and remember the good times you shared... God bless you. Amen 🙏🏿
He was brain dead long before he was 60 !!! A waste of life!! People remember true artists like John Lennon, no one cares or remembers Syd waste product.
When my cat passed away a few weeks ago, I played this song a lot. It makes me feel peace and healing. So anyone going through a hard time, just know time will heal you.
16 Year old kid here. My dad was a big fan of Pink Floyd, and of music in general. I unfortunately wasn't into music until after he died. Now I'm here, listening to music I've never had named. It's been a bit of a journey, slowly finding every song just from the memories of sounds that my dad left behind. I don't know if I'll ever find them all, but I'll keep the ones I've found close to me as I move forward. I may have lost my dad, but at least I know I'll always have pieces of him within me.
That is very true - that must be very hard on you losing your dad at such an age. I have lost my brother and my father in recent weeks and pink Floyd have provided me with reflection and connection to my family that has gone
Sweet heart. Your dad had great taste in music if you are finding this. I found out after my mum died that she LOVED Welsh male voice choir music. Each to their own: I personally have found it very emotional, as the music is very moving. Enjoy your musical journey in your dad's memory. But don't get sucked into the darkness that can be Pink Floyd!
Imagine being loved so much by a group of talented Bro's, who understood your condition. Eventhough you were never coming back, that they wrote and played such iconic songs in your memory.
it baffles me that half of the comments talk about how they should listen to this on drugs when the song is dedicated to a person who ruined his life with drugs. the irony is too strong
Alex Guthrie I think that although it's ironic it's still a part of natural life. all the members of pink Floyd took drugs. it's not something they imposed. there are animals that take drugs simply because it gives them a different mindset. just like many artists of this calibre do/did don't shame drugs. caution and embrace them for what they are
This was one of my wife's favorite songs. We both really love Pink Floyd. I'm listening to this now, while remembering all the beautiful evenings that we shared together. Go fly free, my love. 🦋🐝💛 I will never forget you. 💜♾️
If for legit you want a longer version, check out the performances from their 1977 In The Flesh Tour, (It was split up just like on the album, but some kind souls have edited together several of the versions). The longest performance of parts 1-5 to my knowledge is around 14 minutes and the longest version of parts 6-9 is (I believe) the Montreal performance which is about 24 minutes. Yeah. The longest version (both halves from the same show) out there is the Montreal performance edit (Just a random fan edit by a youtuber) which totals to a little over 37 minutes.
Damm right!! I used to listen to it late at night when I arrived from work. No sounds around, only this song. Man, that's the best thing in life, you don´t need weed or acids. Just lie a little let the music go.

Music like this just isn't made anymore. You can feel the emotion behind each and every note and knowing the context of this song makes it even better. Nowadays we are exposed to an endless stream of ear-candy pop that exists only to make as much money as possible and I find it truly refreshing to re-listen this classic from time to time just to remind myself what true music should be.
I dont like when ppl dont understand why older music is just simply better and more refreshing, its fullfilling and filled with a stream of emotions and passion. Incomparable with today‘s music, its rather soulless and empty, this song is telling a deep meaningful story
@@philipmarkovic544 seriously, you must not be looking hard enough. Mainstream and pop music is soulless and corporate, yes, but there are so so many artists that care about their craft that get swept under the rug because of people who “cant listen to anything nowadays”
Dude I swear on my life it makes me so mad whenever I read these “they don’t make music like this anymore” there’s endless music out there that is even greater than these classic bands but you just have to look. Quit being an oldhead
@@theyrinthewalls for sure, most of the time these older bands are super mainstream too. They dont feel any need to look deeper into music from the 60’s ans 70’s that stayed out of the public eye

“Hey Dad, why is my sister’s name Rose?” “Because your mother loves roses, son” “Thanks dad” “Your welcome Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Full Length: Parts I-IX)”
First time when I looked at the duration of song I was like "Oh, that's too long". Now I can listen this for hours by pressing replay button again, again and again...
I understand you bro, the first day when my dad show me this song i say "But dad it a long song" and he say to me "only listen the song" now i can listen all the day this masterpiece.
Currently having a panic attack. A very bad one. This song is literally healing me. I don't listen to Pink Floyd much but I'm so grateful this whole song exists.

The four notes Gilmour plays immediately following the intro have brought me to tears for going on 20 years now. There is so much power in those notes.
My Vietnamese neighbors across the street were blasting this on loudspeakers a few weeks ago here in Hanoi. I turned off my computer, lit a candle, opened my door, and listened along.
....Lucky you. Hanoi seems to change a great deal. At the time I used to live there (not that long ago though), every morning at 7. 00 A.M, I was awaken by the street loudspeakers playing propaganda stuff at full volume !!
Walked by a guitar store in a mall today. A fairly empty mall, I encountered a maximum of like 20 people the entire time I was there, most of them just walking by. The mall has this dome-like area with amazing acoustics, the store is located there. They had it playing on the speakers, the owner was playing along too. Had to sit down and just listen. Missed my train home and had to sit for 2 hours for the next one. 200% worth it.
Used to fall asleep to this when I was a kid maybe 9 or 10. no drugs. just a record player in my room. 6 years later I heard it for the first time on acid. Now I'm 43 years old father of a 2 and a half year old daughter listening to this with my family at the dinner table. How time's have changed..............
Nic Lawson dude what the hell are you asking. There will always be dangerous times, peaceful ones are short or ideolized. Chaos is the nature of this world of ours.
only floyd can go over 8 minutes before a single word is spoken. The music is the message. But the lyrics are nonetheless still incredibly beautiful. "Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky." still gives me chills.
Lol, literally hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of pieces of music lasting far more than eight minutes, with no words, have been composed and performed throughout human history - the music is always the message.
@@Forlogson I kinda meant "within the scope of modern music". Think about rock music in general, very few bands do a song like this one and put it on a record. but of course the legacy of music going back to classical was heavily instrumental
That lyric "Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky" refers to their original singer and songwriter Syd Barrett who became an acid casualty in the 60's when Pink floyd was becoming famous. The black holes in his eyes are from him taking LSD and getting dilated pupils. This song actually is about Syd
I’m a 14 year old girl and I just started high school a month ago. It’s a lot to get used to so sometimes when I come home I’ll just lay in my bed for an hour doing nothing. THIS is what I listen to. It’s not just a song, It’s an experience. Pink Floyd is definitely the modern day equivalent to Mozart! Edit: I’m 16 now. While I’ve changed a lot over the years, this is still one of my favorite songs. It seriously never gets old LOL
Pink Floyd mastered their own genre, definitely. Prog music is fantastic, alongside their more vanilla stuff like this. but pink Floyd is just unbeatable.
13 yr/o here. Shine on you crazy diamond as a singular IX part suite is probably the greatest piece of music I've ever had the pleasure to listen to. No idea why everyone else listens to weezer when this has existed for around half a century lmao.
My understanding is that Wright's contributions to the group declined after this due to drug addiction and other personal factors. I don't think Waters was to blame.
What can anyone say about Richard, except Wow what a life. He made childrens computer programs when it wasnt even profitable to do so. He wrote music with his best friend David constantly. EVen Gilmour stated there was Music he could no longer play because Richard was gone.
I think the solo in part 6 (15:43) is one of the most underrated guitar solos in the history of rock. It sounds like a screaming cry of agony and pain yet it still sounds so beautiful.
I'm 50 and a lifelong fan and I have to agree with you 100 percent. Just the many different layers and emotions to that solo truly is amazing. That's why David is a Guitar God. Best ever. I feel that this was their best album.
I lost my 32 year old brother 2 weeks ago and found out that he loved this song. I've heard bits and pieces of it throughout the years but never sat and "listened" to it. I had to come and hear what he heard. Addiction and mental health is real. Check on your loved ones and friends often and never ignore the signs of someone crying out for help. RIP brother I hope you found the peace you were looking for.
I lost my cousin he was like a brother to me I feel your pain. Yes check in and save space for the ones you love. Sometimes we get so busy "living" we forget to love.
I wish I recognized the signs when my husband died by suicide when we were 22 years old, that was almost 44 years ago. I’m sorry for your loss too. I always say we learn to live with it but we never truly get over it.
It stands for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Alot of the characters and such are named after classic rock and metal songs and artists. One of the more popular characters in the series, Josuke, has a special power which he dubs "Crazy Diamond".
+Declyn Drejza we must only feel bad for the victims that say things like this. Forgive them for they know not what they DO. Obviously at some point in his life he had a tragedy or perhaps he is just miserable in his own life- perhaps he feels noone cares about HIM, so he projects the same negativity toward other people, which is uncalled for. Get this though he got some sick satisfaction out of posting that +hweenmask he probably also spends a lot of his time on video games...
Jesus...words cannot expressed how insanely talented David Gilmour is. Just listen to his guitar work here. The man plays the guitar like he was born attached to it. There is no ‘trial and error’ visible in his work...because he knew what to play without sweating it or verbalizing it.
It's an incredible song. I suffer with fairly severe Autism and am effectively crazy, it reminds me to just keep shining and being happy.. despite all of the opposition and mental abuse I had in those formulative years. I will never be normal, but I will try not to isolate myself like Syd.
I have a brother and he's autistic. I've seen the struggles you guys face, and I'll never understand but I'm proud that you've found the mindset to be yourself. You can't change how you are, but you can definitely embrace it and nurture it to benefit.
you are not effectively crazy, that is the term the world gives that which they cant understand. what you are is a beautiful mind, dont ever think otherwise
@@Mazvix. kureji diamondo! Yeah jojo is awesome. I’m autistic too. It’s a great song, the lyrics are great, I like it. I looked it up because I’m a jojo fan, and I found this masterpiece.
The sadness of this song really hits home, when you witness an old friend become mentally ill later in life. The worst part is that you can't help that person that you care about so much. One's old chum, will be forever a shadow of their former self. Sad, indeed.

Your comment hits home too, because I can relate so much! When my grandmother had dementia, and my mom's health was failing, and my aunt and uncle were drinking themselves to death... And my dad was simply coming to the end. Crazy diamonds, all of them. They were loved and irreplaceable.

Yeah this song always makes me think of the stories my dad used to tell me about his old friends, all the adventures they used to have, and then the story would end with "and then they got way too into meth/heroin and died/fell off the face of the earth." It's sad how fragile the human mind is
My mum passed away recently and she loved Pink Floyd. Wish she was here, she's at the great gig in the sky on the dark side of the moon shining on like a crazy diamond. : )
Lost my dad 10+ years ago - Miss him every day, but we always bonded over music, and the music will always make me smile. One good thing about music, when it hits you, feel no pain! We're just two lost souls Swimming in a fish bowl Year after year Running over the same old ground And how we found The same old fears Wish you were here
My dad always loved Pink Floyd but as a rebellious teenager i always objected when he tried to introduce them to me. He passed away from cancer last year, and we never got to bond over music, since adult life kept us both too busy. Listening to these pieces now helps me connect with him in ways we never could when he was still here. Shine on, Dad.
Pink Floyd is the Best Band of All Time. your profile makes no sense, you got a name like that, but then you have a picture of the Beatles? don't get me wrong I love the beatles, they're my favourite band....but you know what I mean.
This ain't music, music is a small word with only five letters, this is something from another planet, another dimension, another universe...and Gilmour is a freakin' genius
I use to say this music belong to different universe. Or, aliens, have one reason to visit Earth, and they don't bealive, this was create here, by humans like Syd and David
Amen Angelo.... my favorite band by far...... I mention Gilmour because of the influence he has on my guitar style. But all 4 members were a perfect blend for this style of music.
I lost my arms and legs three years ago and then last year I lost all my teeth to gum disease. This song helped me so much through the dark times. I used to be a professional dancer and it made me smile a lot. My mother told me that it was my destiny to tell stories through dance. However, late one summer's night in 1975, after a drinking binge she fell down the stairs, I was only eight years old at the time. When my father discovered my mother's twisted and lifeless body at the bottom of the stairs he noticed she had been listening to this song on repeat. Shine on mummy you crazy diamond xxx
My step-dad passed away 5 years ago now. He was not only a step-dad for me, he literally gave me the joy of living, the joy of laughing and the great musics taste... He used to play a lot of music (guitar, piano, violon...) and once every week, he played this music in the house at volume 100%. And one day, they broke so I went to live with my mom. The year after I learned he died in his sleep mainly because he used to take antidepressants. Each time I hear this absolute masterpiece of the music, I have chills. Shine on you Johan.
This song was in my Grandma's list of favorites. I remember listening to this for the first time while planting my first pear tree with her. 96 years, with 90 years lived in stride. Miss you Grandma, miss you lots.
I listened to this over and over on the way home from seeing my Mother in hospital for the final time, 2 days before she died. She will always be my crazy diamond.
+Jan Petrovic My dad's vintage LP of this album was in his record player, when he passed suddenly in May of 2009. For me, he's always here in this and in Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever." Take care.
This guy, Syd, has abused of LSD .... that's why he had that kind of eyes at the end of this life ..... He has tested very potent trip and has never going back into our reallitty ..... he was far far away from the reality ..... near to death ...... That's whay he got black hole ......... RIP SYD !!!!
My favorite part gotta be the sixth. It begins very mysteriously, but develops into a scream of madness which adds so much depth to the lyrics in fallowing section.
Go Beyond Nnnnope. I also remember a guy in my city who did the same thing. Funny story, he was a splitting image of David Bowie. Like, seriously! Even weirder is that he was Japanese, but he didn’t LOOK Japanese! *His* cat started blowing things up and sending a small tank with a skull on the front! Weird, huh?
For me, the thing that sets the Floyd above every other band and makes them the undoubted best of all time is that their music is beautiful. It is melodic, sad and soulful and so musical. This and Comfortably Numb are really beautiful songs. When you think these guys were in their late 20's when they were writing and playing this stuff.

🕊️🤘♥️
16 is too young to lose a father. Keep him in your heart always... and in your ears. That way you didn't really lose him.
Awesome
Imagine being loved so much by a group of talented Bro's, who understood your condition. Eventhough you were never coming back, that they wrote and played such iconic songs in your memory.
it baffles me that half of the comments talk about how they should listen to this on drugs when the song is dedicated to a person who ruined his life with drugs. the irony is too strong
Alex Guthrie I don't like listening to Floyd on drugs I get distracted
Alex Guthrie I think that although it's ironic it's still a part of natural life.

Only one problem with this song.
It’s way too short.

You must not be looking hard enough
I dont like when ppl dont understand why older music is just simply better and more refreshing, its fullfilling and filled with a stream of emotions and passion. Incomparable with today‘s music, its rather soulless and empty, this song is telling a deep meaningful story
@@philipmarkovic544 seriously, you must not be looking hard enough. Mainstream and pop music is soulless and corporate, yes, but there are so so many artists that care about their craft that get swept under the rug because of people who “cant listen to anything nowadays”

only floyd can go over 8 minutes before a single word is spoken. The music is the message. But the lyrics are nonetheless still incredibly beautiful. "Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky." still gives me chills.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor made a 30 minute long song without a single word
For a long time I thought this song was (kind of) a requiem for Syd.

My mum passed away recently and she loved Pink Floyd. Wish she was here, she's at the great gig in the sky on the dark side of the moon shining on like a crazy diamond. : )
Condolences
Thank you...she was a special lady and had great taste. Was lucky enough to see Pink Floyd with her :)
Lost my dad 10+ years ago - Miss him every day, but we always bonded over music, and the music will always make me smile. One good thing about music, when it hits you, feel no pain!
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
And how we found
The same old fears
Wish you were here
❤
Dude that was beautiful.
This song is so long, that it actually healed my leg
come on, it's not THAT long...
@@paulhaye3725 its a jojo reference
It’s a joke you idiot
my broken nose got healed but now its weirdly shaped

My dad always loved Pink Floyd but as a rebellious teenager i always objected when he tried to introduce them to me.
He passed away from cancer last year, and we never got to bond over music, since adult life kept us both too busy. Listening to these pieces now helps me connect with him in ways we never could when he was still here.
Shine on, Dad.
❤
Pink Floyd will be remembered in the same regard as Mozart or Beethoven
HiveQu33n yep
sorry but nah
Henri Raths Sorry but yes.
Pink Floyd is the Best Band of All Time. your profile makes no sense, you got a name like that, but then you have a picture of the Beatles?
don't get me wrong I love the beatles, they're my favourite band....but you know what I mean.
I love that picture, and I love The Beatles (mostly; except for about 7 of their songs)
S - Shine on
Y - You crazy
D - Diamond
thats stupid but ok
@@uglyface1469 Acronyms 😆
@@uglyface1469 Why is it stupid, it makes perfect sense.
@@TonyEnglandUK not how acronyms work
@@tysonasaurus6392 He didn't say it *was* an acronym. And he didn't claim that was how acronyms work.
Derek Mooney AMEN BROTHER. NO FINER GUITARIST.
Not only Gilmour, but Waters, Mason and Wright too. What a band.
Shine on mummy you crazy diamond xxx
howd you type.............................
With my blood engorged penis off course...
nah u cappin cus how u type that
My step-dad passed away 5 years ago now.
That is so sad that he got taken from you, and twice.😢
If this song isnt played at my funeral, im not going.
I don't think you'll have a choice. Attendance is mandatory.
Does that mean .. You'll be liv ed😂
i need to start a compilation of best youtube comments haha..this would make the cut for sure
Best comment ever 👏👏👏
U nailed it I mean u own coffin ⚰️
Shine on you crazy diamond. What a fantastic part of my life !!!!!
MINE TOO, WILD TIMES
This song was in my Grandma's list of favorites. I remember listening to this for the first time while planting my first pear tree with her.
96 years, with 90 years lived in stride. Miss you Grandma, miss you lots.
Grandma shines on
I listened to this over and over on the way home from seeing my Mother in hospital for the final time, 2 days before she died. She will always be my crazy diamond.
Amen
So sad to hear that, but she will always be with you
+Jan Petrovic That brought a tear to my eye, mate. She must have been a true treasure. RIP
rest in peace
+Jan Petrovic My dad's vintage LP of this album was in his record player, when he passed suddenly in May of 2009. For me, he's always here in this and in Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever." Take care.
Somebody just drove down my street at 2:12 a.m. with this really, really loud...I still have hope in Mankind.
u mean humankind, male domination is over
Probably burning one, too. Lol, this song was made for stony drives.
Ron Privett this song is one of the best songs to hotbox too rolling around town in a Cadillac
Ron Privett you really need to not exist right now
Ron Privett Still has man in the word.
Why can't I play this loud enough !!!! I want my Dad to hear it. I know he is up there.
Well wherever he is, just know he's happy that when you listen to this masterpiece, he's what you think of.
Don't worry, if there is a heaven, this is on the playlist.
Same bro.
My dad too.
Bruh just go up to the attic and play it for him lmao

Part VII 18:14
Part VIII 19:18
Part IX 22:15

My favorite part gotta be the sixth. It begins very mysteriously, but develops into a scream of madness which adds so much depth to the lyrics in fallowing section.
David Soael me too. Gilmour’s Lap steel adds too much musical crazy.
Fifth and eighth parts for me. 😎
Part VII is my favorite ngl
I Listened to this with my cat...
Now we're both searching for the meaning of life.
Go Beyond
Funny, my cat died, turned into a plant and can now control the air.
@@DTheAustralian mate... I guess you were on acid when you wrote that
Go Beyond
Nnnnope. I also remember a guy in my city who did the same thing. Funny story, he was a splitting image of David Bowie. Like, seriously! Even weirder is that he was Japanese, but he didn’t LOOK Japanese! *His* cat started blowing things up and sending a small tank with a skull on the front! Weird, huh?
@@DTheAustralian damn...
42.
No need to fix it. It's already perfect. Crazy Diamondo
RIP Billy. Shine on, you Crazy Diamond. Your soul burned as bright as any flame.

Its reffering to Syd Barrett, augusto thales
I know. I just think that doesn't make sense this "crazy". If it is an abreviation, this C (crazy) shouldn't exist there.
+Jack Rees Basically, all their albums (Animals being the exception) have been either inspired by or directly related to Syd's departure. Brain damage (dark side of the moon), Wish you were here, The Wall.
