That's right, your boy has gotten on the all lower case non chalant title wave so that you think something is seriously wrong with him and click his video, get baited!
good look with the transition my man, i think theres definitely enough overlap that your audience will enjoy it, and probably still continue to grow your channel. Maybe even at a faster rate
I appreciate it good sir! And keep up the good work on your site
I watched your systems design interview videos and recently landed a new job. This is exactly the kind of content I was looking for next, now that I'm no longer grinding for interviews. I want to slow down and dive deep into the technologies instead of covering as much breadth as possible.
Just broke down screaming and crying in walmart. Where am I supposed to get my corinna kopf / apache flink crossover content now?
You don't think the authors of these papers talk about corinna kopf and apache flink every 3 sentences?
no idea. I'll have to watch the new content and find out.
IMO this is a great move. There are a lot of channels out there that do system design problems, but the distinguishing factor of your channel is the deep dives into the architectural components. I Interviewed with Amazon, Meta, and Block, and got offers from all 3, and a major part of it was what I learned from those videos. I probably spent 80% of my time on your watching (and re-watching) the fundamentals videos and only 20% on the classic system design problem videos.
I think you underestimate how useful really deep dives can be in interviews. They are always looking for ways to make sure you are not just memorizing. In my Amazon interview I used CDC, and the interviewer stopped me and asked me to go into that system and how it works. And TBF that arrow with "CDC" on it is doing a whole lot of work.
And even if a particular video you do isn't actually relevant in any interviews, it is still part of the right attitude towards passing them. Learning every specific system design problem is not a successful strategy, but learning the fundamentals is.
First off, congrats on those job offers, that's amazing! Secondly, completely agree. I've had the luxury of brushing over quite a few concepts that I haven't had the chance to really look into as I've not been a full time engineer for too long. Hopefully this gives me the opportunity I'm looking for.
Hey, just wanted to share that I have gotten a very good job which had 2 system design interviews. You have the best system design videos on youtube, nobody goes into this detail and the interviewers get impressed by these details. You were also amzingly quick to reply to my questions on some of your videos during prep so Thank you so much !!
Congrats Aizaz, that's really amazing and good luck in your new role! Well deserved :)
so bytegraph?! my wife and i still owe you shabbat dinner
So glad I'll have a reason to watch your channel even after I score a job. Also have a lot of passion for distributed systems but no patience to read an article. Can't wait for the videos!
My name is not Corinna Kopf and I approve this message. Go Jordan!
Corinna said she's okay with it as long as I still let her be my big spoon
thank you! i am exited about the future of this chanel
Jordan's YT Videos + Company's Tech Blogs + Alex Xu's Books (Vol1 & Vol2). You are totally covered! Thank me later!
I'm even more excited for this. A lot of times I get bored learning things incrementally and like to see content that I really don't understand, which then shows me what information I want to backfill.
I'm with you. Cracking interview problems is a good start that opens doors to different concepts and systems that I may never have the chance to work on in my job. But after reading and thinking about quite a number of the problems, I started to get curious about the real-life implementation and the detailed research behind it. Unfortunately, I find myself not always able to find the readings I need or understand them. So, I 100% support your decision here. It's the right thing to do and I hope to continue to learn from your new journey. Thanks for all the amazing videos!
Excited for you! And excited for what comes next! I will await those deep dives so I can CRUSH my next sys design interview (my one motivation to consume what you're planning next is that one interview where I failed where as a junior SWE I was asked to reason along the lines of a research paper -.- yeah im petty i just wanna get back)
Good luck!!! And we'll see you again!!! :)
I like this idea, Im in a similar boat w my career/interest in system design and would love to learn more about real life applications but don't always have high enough priority to read a full whitepaper. Would definitely tune in to these
I found you when looking to derust on sys design, but this new direction is what’s actually made me subscribe
Excited to see wher ethis new direction will go! I personally like that you're moving away from the interview space and more towards a general learning direction. Can't wait to cover papers with you on this channel!
Excited to learn from you Jordan.
Your channel really helped me refresh on systems design when I was grinding for a new job. Thank you. And best of luck in whichever direction you choose to go
Makes sense. Good plan! I’ll be along for the ride
same here. waiting for your new video was my number one thing to do on Saturday
What you say is very reassuring. I'm here to get better and interviews are for high-level hand waving diagrams. Would love to see discussions on distributed consensus, distributed causality tracking, etc.
Thanks for making these videos! I've been learning a ton from this channel and can't wait for more next-level stuff
Looking forward to more in depth learning! Thanks again
There are many system design videos on UA-cam that are from people who never built any system so they end up being shallow and have unsolved distributed problems. As much as I liked your previous videos, I’m interested for the next and having more depth. Thanks
God speed to you Jordan . You changed my thinking process about systems .
Excited for the new chapter Jordan! Depth is a great way to differentiate and I'm even more excited to tune in.
Thank you sir! Balls deep indeed
@@jordanhasnolife5163 Did you say balls? Unsubscribed.
Jordan, you have been an inspiration to me and I am sure, you are many hundred thousands out there. I wish you good luck and I am sure you will rock in what ever direction you choose for. Good luck and best wishes. May the God bless you :)
Looking forward to learning with you!!!
Sounds great, it is a blessing when a man finds his passion.
I like it. Now that I've scammed my way into an L5 FAANG position (in part by watching your videos) I need to quickly learn how things actually work beyond a surface level so I can stop feeling like a total fraud lol
Legend! You're not the fraud man, if anyone is that would be me! Congrats on the offer and good luck in the new role
Great Initiative Jordan, I hope you keep on enriching yourself with new knowledge and enlighten us in the way.
Well! I would love for you to go as deep into a paper (maybe also its implementation of the stuff in Rust/C++ or whatever, don't use python please). Would love to learn from you! Cheering you on!
Really looking forward for more deep videos. Thanks!
I think a lot of us are in the exact same boat as you. Wanting to sharpen our systems design breadth so we can the systems design portion of the interview process.
Then, after having stumbled into all of this incredible content, realizing that this area is actually very fascinating.
I know I personally would love to follow you on these deep dives as well. (I've been doing some of that on my own)
I still think there's value in, as you alluded to, having your perspective (and humor) on the white papers, engineering blog articles, etc you uncover.
Dude. More power to you. I can't wait to continue this journey with you. i have learned so much from you. You have taken my understanding of distributed systems to a whole new level. more than that, you helped me remember why I loved this stuff in the first place. Sending you as much love as one middle aged man can.
Sending you love back (not like that 💯, ok maybe like that)
I'm genuinely so excited for this Jordan! Been following your design 2.0 series which really shaped some fundamental concepts for me - thank you for that. As a fellow SWE who really likes to learn new things outside of the realm of interview preparation, this channel is a godsend. Keep it coming! Just a suggestion, maybe you could also link whatever you're reading so it kinda feels like we're in this together you know? idk learning alone sometimes can become lonely and having a community to discuss things with can crack open the mind like a walnut. lol
Dynamo first, get cracking
Very excited for what’s next! I was able to score two amazing offers recently and your videos were definitely a big factor. Since then I have been trying to continue the learning, so this is just perfect. Thank you for all the effort you put into this, cheers and looking forward to what’s next!
That's amazing Mohit! Best of luck in the new role and thanks for watching :)
When I first started learning about System Design the first thing I realized was that the tutorials were pure theory and no practice and my whole reason for learning SD was to be able to build big apps from scratch. Super happy for the new direction of the channel, sure it might lose some audience but it will provide content that probably no one else is currently doing.
Im sure you’re going to do great in whatever you choose to pursuit. Will be anxious to see the outcomes in the channel once the time comes! ❤
Your deep dives is the reason I'm subscribed to your channel. 😂
You're going to do great! Excited to watch and support you as always.
Are you available to consult? I could not find any contact info. Excellent videos!

I love it! Excited to see the future content. I definitely agree with your rational for changing course and I think your channel will be better because of it.
I support whatever you decide to do, Im not even looking for a job its just fun to watch you explain stuff
Good luck Jordan for the new adventure!
Hi Jordan, I’m also looking to specialize in Distributed Systems so this is actually amazing news for me. Love your System Design content, keep it up! 🔥
Hey Jordan, your videos helped land a Job at Meta IC5. I’ve watched and followed many bloggers and content creators but I couldn’t have cracked with any of the limited content they provide. Thanks for all
the work. I’m very grateful to have found your channel. 😊 I’ve recommended your channel to atleast 30 people. I’ll continue to do so.
Hey Bhargavi! That's amazing news, congratulations on the offer and amazing work! I appreciate the kind words and thanks for your help promoting the channel :)
All the best Jordan, This is a logical Next step for your channel.
All the best! Looking forward to what comes next.
Really looking forward to some new content and a new approach! I’ll follow you wherever you go, it’s your insights and delivery style that’s the draw.
would you also please share the links of the papers and videos you go thru?
Yeah realistically I don't have time to make more than one video/read one paper a week so it'll likely just be that one
hey Jordan what languages , framework u use for your daily work
Gluck! I'll continue to watch as I want to learn more as well
I've been trying to get through the MIT 6.5840 lecture videos for a while now, but they're super long and feel just like regular university classes, which aren't that fun to watch. Your video formats are really awesome, and you're great at explaining stuff, so I bet you'll make more watchable content.
Next level !!, i watch for fun + inspirations for personal projects ty jordan keep up and i would like to learn more in system designs KEEP UP!!
I'll be along for the ride!
It's going to be cool to learn these topics with and from you.
I'm a software engineer but I studied applied math in school. You're channel is helping fill in the gaps of fundamental computer science that I didn't get in school.
Good luck with the new direction!🤝🏻👏🏻
I’m sticking around 😉
Go Jordan We giga chads here to support you :)))
Looking forward to seeing your next work!
Excited to see the new content! Always appreciate the insightful videos 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Very curious to see the new content and i'm all for it after you taught me alot with the system design 2.0 videos and the system design questions. I'll give it a try and i'm sure i'll find it useful and entertaining with you as always. Keep growing my friend, and thank you!
Looking forward to the new deep dive content!! Godspeed Jordan 🏁
Can you please consider Low Level Design more video as part of your Time For a Change?
I've done some of these if you go back far enough lol
@@jordanhasnolife5163 Yes I seen those, can you also please consider covering more LLD case studies as its vital part of software learning and interview process. It will be great help as your videos are simply great!
This a is a great direction, advanced stuff is what we need
LESSGOOO! More in depth videos please!
Really like you share your thoughts so honestly with us. Also it will be great if you can share some of the ways or resources you use during self study ❤
Well I suppose that will be the whole video haha
Great transition man :)
some food for thought: once this is up an running, it could be interesting to have the ability for us to generate study groups / paper discussions groups. Let's say, I'm into reading and discussing the Map-Reduce paper and so are some of your followers. A Discord or alike would be ideal. I know this is a lot of work on your side, you have 0 obligation to even consider it, but I'm sure if you ever consider there'll be plenty of people willing to contribute and help (myself included). Again, not a request at all, just some food for thought :)
I'll give it some thought once I get started on this :)
@@jordanhasnolife5163you building a community might be a good idea. Lots of people would be very interested
Do you have a recommended list of books?
I do not haha, this is stuff I'm attempting to figure out for myself at the moment.
full support
That's a great idea dude. Would you be able to share the paper/resource(s) you are targetting to read in next 'x' days? Kind of a follow along concept, I'd like to go through them and follow your videos. It could help motivate me to learn as well.
Thinking I'll do Dynamo first if you want to get ahead of the curve
Love it! good luck, I have my notifications on
What do u think about trying ur luck doing a startup? haha. Anyways all the best man!!
It's definitely something that I've given some thought to in the past, but I am having a nice time with my current job! I just hope that this allows me to get back to what I was originally doing with this channel, which was pushing myself to adopt a consistent learning schedule.
systems design interview prep content gets silly and redundant because systems design interviews are silly and redundant. the interview process is a cruel joke right now and while i have no faith it will improve i am confident it will change rendering a lot of these scripted design and leetcode prep videos obsolete. real knowledge of systems will always be relevant to our work and this is the right pivot to make, keep it up proud of ya looking foward to it
Good direction, mate.
Now that I have a job again, I find I have less interest in software design videos for the sake of job interview and seek to expand my knowledge instead.
...if you /do/ want to get a PhD in distributed systems, I can connect you with some folks at Berkeley.
I really appreciate that Dmitri! As things stand I do enjoy my current job, but I may reach out to you just to catch up :)
go for it!
can you code a show a bit.. maybe a service, or choreography of service.
I'm afraid I don't know what you mean here

Hit 100K, already! 🎉
distributed systems are based, so do that.
I commented on your video "Google SWE teaches systems design | EP8: SQL and its Pitfalls" about your 101 subs 2 years ago.
You really deserve the best man, and for me you are the best system design channel.
Whatever you do I am sure it will be a success.
Hey Jordan, I just cleared meta onsites and your videos were quite entertaining and helpful and yes the substack too. So, thank you🎉

Awesome, so one the best tech UA-cam channels is just gonna level up and get even better. Gonna be GOATed, looking forward to it.
Would you want to design some RAG apps, or data processing pipelines? I don't see videos for these in your series yet
Also ps, love your channel, keep up the good work and I'll def be tuning into the deep dive videos you're planning
So admittedly, I'm not sure I have enough knowledge needed for the ML systems design type of videos. For information retrieval maybe I could look up a solution to be fair. For "data processing pipelines" do you foresee anything other than just like using spark?
@@jordanhasnolife5163 for data processing pipelines, like a scalable system capable of high throughput, distributed ideally for scalability. Think of something that digests a bunch of raw data and eventually stores it somewhere for retrieval. Maybe taking a lot of unstructured data of some kind and making it structured. Think product reviews, transcripts, or emails.
For the ML and RAG stuff, it could be something you can learn!
looking forward to the new content

For the deep dives, can you also post a "for further reading' section. Kate Upton told me as I made her breakfast that she loves it when pale software guys post that section in their vids.
For sure. I don't know how "deep" the dives will be to start, but I'll try and get a sense of it myself.
Also, back off Kate she's mine
what do you think of the tech market rn bro? you content is great!
To be honest, I'm pretty insulated from it! Working in trading means that I haven't been following layoffs/stock performance too much since I'm mostly just concerned with how our company is doing.
Does seem like some people are starting to get offers again though!
god
Hey good luck dude, BTW I would love for you to share if you came across any good content (video, paper or confrances) I am definitely interested in diving deeper to this domain, probably you can share them in your substack account, I think that's very valuable by itself!
Will do as I go! Hoping this can be something that I can do for a long time :)
I think it's great that you have a genuine passion for system design and being at the frontier of software engineering. Although I like being a swe enough, I ultimately care more about making money. Even been thinking about leaving the field and becoming an entrepreneur after watching too many tiktoks of dumb 20 year old kids making 7 figures selling minecraft shirts or some shit. I'm way smarter than these little shits, I deserve to be rich too 😤
Oh let me not get it twisted I'm a greedy pos lol. That being said, I think that in the long run me attempting to become a "subject matter expert" will be a more rewarding process, both for my intellectual curiosity but also financially.
Not to sound too trite, but imo it's not good for your mental health to base your own happiness on how you're doing financially compared to other people. There will always be people who are richer than you who seem like they "deserve" it less.
@@hotnonsense5892 I was being facetious. I just want to be rich 🤷♂
