The Lab NYC is Mixmag and Smirnoff Sound Collective's weekly afterwork party where we stream the best American and international DJs from the intimate space connected to our Brooklyn office. On Thursday, May 11, Mixmag welcomes pioneering house producer Satoshi Tomiie to The Lab for a hybrid DJ set focusing on his modular gear.
Satoshi Tomiie has been a guiding force in the global house community for decades, linking with Frankie Knuckles to collaborate on the legendary track ‘Tears’ early in his career in 1989. The Japanese born, New York and Paris based DJ, producer, remixer and label boss has since had seminal releases on respected record labels like Strictly Rhythm and FFRR, and more recently has launched his Abstract Architecture that’s home to his own material. Fueled by elements of jazz and the piano, his work reflects a soulful motif paired with steady rhythms made to energize the dancefloor.
For his set in The Lab NYC, Satoshi will deliver a hybrid DJ set, utilizing a unique eurorack modular system which he’s been experimenting with at his studio in NYC. This will be one of the first performances from the producer with this gear setup and will introduce fans to the future of his output.
Firt time I heard Satoshi live was i Yokohama in 1985 after I haf just hear Tears. Talk about a magical experience for a 18 year old! Epic
Satoshi is STILL the Deep House Godfather!! Still listening to “Tears” in 2021!!
Deep house? Dude.. SAW Recordings...
Vinyl, CD, digital, analog....all across the board!! Satoshi is the real deal!!
Super sound😮
Tomiie and Talla XXL the ones that converted me to deep house 30 years ago.
Satoshi Tomiie is one of very few artists that continue to surprise the world with class leading quality house music. He is a dying breed, an absolute honor to have seen him in Colombia. LIVING LEYEND
Agreed! I've never had the pleasure of seeing him live, as I live in Texas. But have seen many greats... however, satoshi is extraordinary.
He is coming again to bogota July 9th
@@amyparra1881 cross border warriors brought him to Dallas 2018 epic party
Eternal ❤
私は1997年ぐらいに流行った、ハウスが好きです。シカゴハウスってやつ。誰かまた、流行らせて下さい。
Still listening to his global underground nu breed!!
One of the BEST mixes out there to date! That whole Nu Breed series was off the charts.
That was a fantastic CD. I bought the 3LP version at the time. Echomen - Substance is still one my all time favorite tracks.
Antony Pappa was my favorite from that series
Anthony Pappa was amazing. I actually did not knew him at the time, but the guy was a master.
And this shall be the best response to "their" current experimentation. Any producers/DJs still on the roll from the 90-2k are experimenting with new waves, melodies, etc. I got it, the industry needs to evolve otherwise it will get forgotten.
Where the hell is the energy? We fell too deep and yet cannot reconnect to our inner-primal instincts with these sounds.
Thus we are still listening to Nu Breed sessions, InnerSanctuary, P&W, etc. Cause its the only tool ever since remaining for us..
Exquisite and Talented Satoshi 👍🏽
Still kickin it. the youngsters have amazing access to music these days!! all in the palm of your hand. from
the innovators & old school legends to new gen artists. its a fucking crazy time.
That is so true, and thank you for reminding us!
te quiero satoshiiiiiiiiiiii
Il numero 1 dei numeri 1 Satoshi Tomiie!❤👏👏👏

i love SATOSHI TOMIIE
He's a badass!
The Number One!
the old school living legend
Sato ...yes yes Sato 🎶🙌👍👍
Awesome..The master class is now In. love this man.
I have to laugh because people always give djs a hard time, "All they do is play other people's songs, and now with computers, anyone can be a dj." And then when they get a legend using all mediums and playing a predominantly live, complicated performance, they give them a hard time or call it, " Bloody boring." Haters gonna hate!
you had to admit that is kinda boring and too monotone
Mozart of house music
Respect for the skill, but i don't like the songs
Sephiroth Cloud the first song is dope though
Mix the sounds in that way and say allbody could be a dj... FAIL!
I like the one that goes - peow peow, blip ta tap whoa, the best!
"masters at work" satoshi!!
old school underground style in the house... real style
Beautiful, isnt it?
The first 20 minutes of this mix are incredibly boring compared to what I just witnessed. He recently came to St. Louis the other night and was UNBELIEVABLE. Life changing experience no question. Super nice guy as well!
Sencillamente uno de los mejores dj's de la historia del underground
Verità
Да❤
This is not boring at all, Jeez this is on point! Great set.
Soothing and rhythmic... ideal for my gym sessions 💪
Ideal for anything

Lovely ♡
❤ hes my fave
I was not a fan of Satoshi! Actually, knew that he was a legend however never attended party with him playing. Last Saturday and under PHAEX Music Festival in Corfu Island, Greece I had the privilege to listen to his set, gradually started from low minimal tech house and raised up to more techno house stuff. Unfortunately I had to leave but no worries until next time! Thank you PHAEX for hosting him!
Sei un mostro SATOSHI TOMIE GRANDE DJ....
Il Più Bravo al Mondo! Nulla da aggiungere!!!
such a rad performance
Millennials and centennials writing about how "boring" is due to they have rules about their life, and if there's not inmediatnes in all they do, have, listen or watch is all boring, great set performed by Satoshi

Years ago! Miss those days. ♡
No way - if I was there for this - i wouldn't be bouncing off the walls!
Super ...///
The Maestro at Work :: Absolutely majestic housey, groovy, rhythmic technological masterpiece by the always innovative by definition Satoshi-sensei. He is an artist like no other. He cannot be praised enough. He's been at the top of the A legends league almost since the beginning . Here at at 25 ua-cam.com/video/e6lpXoqC4GM/v-deo.html . I once had a girlfriend who hated house music, hated sequencer music , hated the night club scene but was opened minded and came with me to a Satoshi Tomiie performance at Pacha Ibiza when he launched Undulation. She said that the professionalism of Satoshi-sensei had her mesmerised during the whole performance and thanked me for dragging her to Ibiza to experience the one of the TWO modern Mozarts of our time: Ryuichi Sakamoto & Satoshi Tomiie. We have Huge Respect for him.
Wish I could see him play shit busters like Hungry and Virus... Miss those days... I mean J would love this music from any new age kids these days.. But with Satoshi one hopes to be enthralled... Those were the days.. His tracks.. The dance floor... Oh! Dem screams... Faaaak!
Clearly has a long way to go with developing what he's aiming for, here. I'm pretty sure he'll nail it and it'll become a mainstay of his performances.
Кулыннан килэ, бишлэ!
reminds a bit of a japanese thunderbird bobbing around behind all that gear :P

I got so excited when saw Tomiee's name there... so had a listen, but... this is - as others already said: BORING. Not just a little, this is a very B.O.R.I.N.G dj set. I think the crowd was expecting something else as well... :(
Was glad to see him by the way. :P
satoshis early stuff around 2000 was fucking dark n moody man. I'm not really feeling his modern stuff. he really used to be one of my heros back then. his record label "Saw Recordings" wad badaas. i remember id wait for every release and buy themfrom the record shops. man there was some good classics on that label
I totally agree with you! He's performing live together with mixing which is throwing the set off. When I saw his name I was SUPER excited because I was expecting his old classic sound but.... This certainly is not his best. However, I like how he's trying to infuse current dj performance technology with his mixing and.... that's about it.
💪🎇🎆🎊🎉
Fuuuuuuuck!! What a horrible thing to happen to such an amazing intro!!! Rest is on point!!
hahaha! yeah, wow... I was just listening to this while doing other things and when that beeeep happened I was like.. no fucking way.. but yeah, shit happens even to the greatest of DJs.
he never recovered from that intro, he's ALL over the place ... I've heard so much better shit from him.
EXACTLY what I was thinkin!! This is NOT Satoshi, I've heard terrific sets from him. Well... that intro shit happens to the best of us. I've been there several times and its so hard to gather yourself and decide where to go from there, because, it affects the crowd! So getting the energy back into and from the crowd is always hard after such a shock.
Alex Purtle :)👍🔥
42:28 lemme have a look....fuck this i'm not an engineer
Lol
Soybean mastermind 8.0 🥜🥜🥜🥜
Track at 30:18? that's a sick beat
Is there a tracklisting avaiable? The track around the 18min is so damn deep, melodic & dreamy. I need this track for my sets.
tracklist!!?
40:00 INICIA LO MEJOR. ...Que paso con Satoshi. .NO ES EL MISMO
Aca toy
If you think this is 'boring' then you clearly don't understand house music and what these grooves would do to you when the MDMA hits.
I feel bad for you.
Mdma? ....music doesnt equal +drug. House is House. "Rock concert boring? Clearly you werent drinking!" Lol, ?.
Lo malo de acostumbrarse a escuchar solo djs tocando, esto es un live performance, hoy en dia ya casi nadie hace eso¡!¡
Так качественно и раньше не многие делали,у него,и подобным ему музыка в их ДНК.
Maximous respect to S.T., but I thought it would be best :-(
