- Part 1 of 2, "Why Make?" In this broadcast, Mako answers questions taken from email and other responses that he has gotten since this series was launched. Mako would like to thank over 500 subscribers in the last two weeks, and invites these questions on the reply feed here. Should we be making when we are not going to be a "successful" artist? Why should we be making anything when no one sees it or buys our work? Mako loves this question so much that he is going to spend the next two episode to answer them! Thank you for these. First off, my 20 month old son loves watching these and listening to you talk. Second, your videos have encouraged me to start drawing again, and thinking of ways to use art to communicate the message of Holy Week. Even though it doesn't come out perfect, I do like using chalk, crayons, and other weird materials, it feels good to be making something again, and your videos are a big reason for that.

I have been trying to put into words success in art....this has long been my thoughts towards art and creation....art is a gift not a commodity....The art of creation is the success; whether monetary or critical success comes matters not...but we are meant to use our talents to gift the world with them....to help, to bless, to be with each other.
Thankyou Mako for your sharing. I have question, do you attach paper onto canvas? Or directly onto a wooden frame? I have been thinking about how to put paper on a wooden frame, instead of behind glass. Thanks again!
Tin Yan Lee I can do a session on this. The quick answer is yes, both, depending on what you are trying to do. The paper has to be sized (aluminum sulfate and nikawa glue mixture called dosa) so that’s also another factor
Thankyou so much Mako! Would love to learn more about your process. I’ve been wondering about the way to attach paper for a very long time and have tried applying gloss medium on canvas and then sticking Chinese painting paper on to it. But it ended up with a lot of bubbles. Really looking forward to learning a better way to do it :)
