    Hi my man. I watched your video again today for the umpteenth time. I don't know why but it's somehow nice to see you trying to rationalize which album to keep. I have 8 copies of this album now and let me tell you the 1995 DMM is probably my favourite stereo copy. The 1968 original UK MONO and the 2014 MONO are in sound quality almost identical but the 68 sounds louder and the 2014 sounds more controlled but essentially the same. And you are correct the 2012 remastered stereo is awful. The 2018 4lp box set with the Esther demos sound good but after a while if listening they start to grate on the ears a bit. I don't know why but it's a problem I find with all those 50th anniversary editions and it's possible because of the bass and how everything sticks out in the mix where as those original analogies sound so smooth

    Hey there Matt! Happy Thursday to you! If I could chime in for a minute and express my thoughts & feelings about your "unfortunate misfortune"😂... Easily, I would keep the '95 DMM... I personally feel that the pleasure of the listening experience is by far the most important in owning an LP (after all, isn't that one of the main reasons why you are "upgrading" a lot of your vinyl, and also buying less nowadays? I think your exact words were "quality over quantity"?😇)... Simply because, if the album doesn't sound good, why then would you want to listen to it anyway and have it as part of your collection?.. it would simply become just another "tag along" album that would do basically nothing better than sitting around & collecting dust👌.... If it is the warping that bothers you all that much, you can just sit, relax, and listen to the album in a different part of the room where you won't have the desire to watch or stare at the record while it is playing... Or another suggestion if I may👍... Maybe you can try to sell all three copies and then with the $ you make, you can then buy yourself a pristine DMM copy that isn't warped, so that way you will be satisfied and happy all the way around with looks and sound!...Anyway, best of luck with your decision my friend.. I hope all is going well for you and that you're having a wonderful week..Enjoy the rain (it's almost here!), and I will chat with you again real soon! Take care! Ms Elizabeth🎶🎶🎶

    • @MattHayesVinyl
      @MattHayesVinyl  5 років тому

      Hi Elizabeth! Yeah, I have decided to do just that... keep the 1995 pressing. You are right that the listening experience is the most important thing. The audio quality on that pressing was definitely the best and WAY superior to the 2012 version. The problem with buying a DMM copy is finding one, at least on ebay. Most sellers don't put "DMM" in the title or description. I took a look last night and there were zero. That's not to say there aren't any on there, of course.. but I imagine a lot of sellers don't realize it's a DMM pressing. Discogs might be a better bet but it's the same issue I got myself into... namely, not being able to inspect the vinyl first. I bought '68 and '95 pressings online, you see. So, I think I am good with keeping the 1995 copy. I can live with the warp as it isn't audible to me. Thanks so much for watching!

    I would keep them all but if you refuse to do that, I would sell all 3 and get the brand new Giles Martin 2018 release. It is amazing and I think you would finally be happy in every way.

    • @MattHayesVinyl
      @MattHayesVinyl  5 років тому

      Hi Melinda... ah, this is where you and I will have to disagree! I have listened to the Giles Martin remix online (which I admit is not quite the same as listening on vinyl) and was just like "meh". It didn't do anything for me. Thought it sounded decent but not spectacular and it wasn't a remix that was needed. Having said that, I LOVED the Esher Demos on the other disc. Too bad those aren't available on their own.

    I think the DMM White Album on white vinyl I have is from 1985 and is all analog. To me, it's the best version by far... deep, full bass and lots of detail. I wasn't aware of a 1995 DMM cut from a digital file.

    I have nine LP copies, not counting the copy that comes with the blue box set. I have five original/early numbered releases on Apple, the 1985 DMM German Apple white vinyl version, a 1970s purple Capital white vinyl copy, the recent stereo remix, and the mono remaster from a few years ago. Because they're all in great shape, I'm not getting rid of a single one of them. Why would I? I don't need them. And guess what... I will keep picking up every good copy I see. My advice: Keep them all!

    Burn a CD copy (preferably from the 2009 remaster) and just play that. I've got one if you'd like a copy. Then keep the best looking, best in shape LP (which is going to be the B&N record if it has the complete artwork and pic package) as your I'm-a-vinyl-nutjob keepsake large artifact. It's beautiful but as you said, it sounds unsatisfactory. Well, that's what you get for buying into the vinyl reissue b.s. Lesson learned!

  • @HighnoonsVinyl

    The DMM would be the best way to go. Sonically, just because of the mastering method, it would have the most warmth. If a record skips, it isn't worth keeping, period. And if the 2012 press sounds flat, it isn't worth listening to. Return the 2012 press, maybe VCLT away the 68 press, and enjoy the warmth of the DMM.

    • @MattHayesVinyl

      Yeah, I ended up keeping the 1995 and trading in the 1968 and 2012. The skip had annoying me for a long time and the condition of the sleeve wasn't great, just OK. Some seam splits and such. The 2012 sounded terrible.

    3:40, the 2012 version is cut from a 192k/24bit file, as is "Sergent peppers 2017" remix! But it's compressed sounding like you said! But sgt. Peppers is better! The other "stereo" editions were cut from "low res" 44.1k/16bit ! The "monos" we're cut directly from tape (mono versions of "the white album" and "sgt.pepper" as well)! PS. I absolutely love DMM cuts, I think that's how hd vinyl will sound!

    • @MattHayesVinyl

Also, I'd have to buy it online most likely which carries the risk that I ran into with the 1968 (skipping) and 1995 (warped) copies I bought before. But if I do come across a UK original (and I'm always looking!), I may pull the trigger if it's cheap. Unlikely but I've found if you wait long enough, sooner or later a cheap nice condition copy of just about anything comes along.

    I have the 1995 UK DDM which sounds excellent, but i stopped listening to it when I bought the 2009 remaster on CD. I hardly ever bother with records for the last 15 years, I prefect the anxiety-free playing of cds instead, if you know what i mean. Sometimes i feel nostalgic about a record - i keep each and everyone of them in mint-like condition - but when i am about to get into that whole ritual of playing it, i think oh hell, why bother ? And then I play the cd version instead.

      If I just want casual listening, I quite often stick on a CD instead of the vinyl. It's more convenient for sure.

      For casual or more intensive listening, I prefer CDs. Because first, i find nothing wrong with the way they sound but rather the opposite and second, because i know that nothing will go wrong during my listening, so i can just relax and enjoy. No worries about keeping an eye on the pussycat, in case she decides to jump on top of the turntable. No searching frantically with an ear batonette in hand for the offending speck of dust which caused that annoying ticking in the middle of a quiet passage. You know what i mean.

    What're the sonic differences between the '95 DMM version and your 1968 2nd pressing?

    • @MattHayesVinyl
      @MattHayesVinyl  3 роки тому

      The 1995 is brighter, although that's a common feature of DMM. The 1968 was much better rounded but it skipped in one or two places and condition wasn't as good. I since picked up a 70s UK pressing that beats out both.

      @@MattHayesVinyl congrats on your new find. I’ve been trying to decide whether to go mono or stereo...which one’s better in your opinion? A lot of folks prefer the mono, but it’s not available on Qobuz/Spotify for me to audition.
      Which year/matrixes did you go for?

      @@GodfreyMann I've never heard the mono! Would like to but it's really expensive.

      @@MattHayesVinyl yeah, makes me wish I’d bought the 2014 Beatles in Mono box set when it came out...a high price item but great value compared to trying to get 2nd hand mint equivalents.

    All I can say, I bought the white album first as I got into collecting, I got the new one too. Mine skipped by yer blues, so I gave it back. Also this new release sounded awful and it made me nearly quit my new hobby. I thought if this is final, I don't want to start collecting. Later I got the blue box and this one is what I expected. So I am still collecting:-) I would always keep the best sounding.

      Same here... the 2012 version sounded terrible to me. Quiet, muddy, compressed... the only thing I would have considered keeping it for was the condition.
