I would have liked to see a thin coat of plaster applied to the mold to help smooth the texture. Then on top of that brush on your mold release. I would also close the gaps in the mold frame with a thin layer of clay on the side of the styrofoam to prevent leaks. This is an interesting idea with a lot of potential.
The styrofoam emits fumes when put to a flame. Be sure to have a mask, proper ventilation, or just take it outside if the weather permits. I would also use a stick lighter. They shouldn't heat up and your not likely to burn yourself. Those Bic lighters can pop off if heated too much. At least have a couple to allow for one to cool while the other is in use.

Try a spray bottle that has a good mist pattern and use acetone. long arm length strokes, and a good space away from Styrofoam.
