- Dissolved Styrofoam or Plastic Coating of Products | Disolve Styrofoam for plastic coating of your proyects
Hello.
Previously, almost every homemade product I had to cover with several coats of varnish. This is especially necessary for products that are installed outdoors. But varnishes do not always perform their protective functions. For example, sometimes there are varnishes that do not dry completely and can still stick for a very long time. Sometimes it happens that the individual parts of the product are glued together, and then come off from each other with paint. It also happens that the product is glued to the surface on which it stands.
To avoid the problems described above, I cover my products with dissolved styrofoam. Thanks to the thin layer of plastic that remains after applying the solution, my products get excellent protection from rain, wind and other vagaries of nature.
In this video you will see how to dissolve the styrofoam for use as a protective layer for products.
Dissolved styrofoam is very firmly adhered to the surface of the product and is the best substitute for varnish.

This is brilliant and not only that, watching that styrofoam dissolve is very satisfying!
Lol, did this 45 years ago, the concrete on the garage floor used to powder and my Dad and i mixed up a whole lot of Styrofoam and lacquer thinners, ended up with about 2 gallons of the mix, still on the floor today and still holding up.
That's pretty cool. So it ages and keeps well, at least indoors away from UV? Decent spill resistance I imagine?
I'm kind of playing with the idea of coating the garage walls (and tablers, shelves ect.) with a layer of this over very cheap paint - with the idea being that I could just hose the whole area down if needed.
Thinner can be gotten in bulk pretty cheap, and styroffoam is basically sourced for free if you know where to look. Good water-repelling outdoor paint or polyurethane on the other hand is pretty expensive where I live, literally on the order of 10x the price of cheap indoor wall paint.
I will definitely do some smaller scale tests on this and see how well it resists some common "garage spills".
The thing I really love about DIY solutions like this is you can just make a dollar's worth more if you need small repairs or expansions, and understanding what the product is really made of is important.
@@TheStigma if you spill gas or thiner on it it will soften again, easy to repair and will reharden when the solvent evaporates.
@@lotuselanplus2s Thanks. I don't suppose you know how it compares to polyurethane?
@@TheStigma I'd love to know that too.

Be certain that any plastics u brush this on (as well as the paints applied) are NOT solvent based. Lest your project be “melted” or otherwise ruined
Why would anyone put this on something made of plastic in the first place? Plastics are already waterproof which is the purpose of applying the styrofoam (plastic) coating.
\ (0.o) /
.
@@ATinyPillow because people dont know any better ? Because they like the look? Because they might perceive it as adding a layer of protection to their paint job? Lotsa reasons people might choose to do so.. OTHER than waterproofing
@@stephenm103 : Stephen, watch the video again. The whole point of applying the styrofoam/plastic coating was to waterproof the item, he even showed pieces that were coated withstanding being totally immersed in water.
.
@@ATinyPillow sure. In this case thats this artists purpose. But people apply clear sealers to their work for lotsa reasons OTHER than just waterproofing. Right? They want a consistent uniform sheen to the work - for example.. or - they want to protect an otherwise fragile finish. Waterproofing is one pf many. THE POINT IS - dont apply this coating to anything that is susceptible to solvents.
@@stephenm103 Hi! I came here from another video where the maker created a thickened paste which was used as a glue. He then made a patch out of it and put it on a hole he made on a plastic jug. After letting it cure, he showed how it was a permanent fix to the plastic container. Personally I wouldn't drink that water, but as a fix on a jug for handwashing water, a laundry liquid detergent jug, etc. I think it was an excellent idea. Got me thinking of going around town and collecting styrofoam just t make up this glue/bonding stuff and keep the styrofoam out of the landfill...
WOW! tyfs!
Great idea 💡
Bu harika bilgi için teşekkürler.👌🙏
Hola este disolvente se pude hacer con thinner
e isopor solo estos dos productos ? Gracias
Boa dica, thanks!
Thank you very much it is very useful !
Acetone is the solvent to use. When it evaporates it leaves no residue.
I have used it and styrofoam for years. If you try to use the resulting gloop in a mould, then when it dries you will see huge amounts of small air bubbles still trapped inside - this is the milky look when it's a dense globby mess. In the video the mixture is quite runny. You can make it as solid as you like - just use less acetone. You need a vacuum pump if you want to degass it and use it as a solid moulding material.
One last thing - I have found it breaks down in direct sunlight and becomes quite brittle, but as a thin coat, as used here, its probably ok.
Water free only.. but toluene seems to work better for me
I tried using lacquer thinner at first. It just melted the styrofoam into a ball of putty-like stuff and wouldn’t disperse into the thinner. I think you could use it in a mold, not sure. I’m going to try it today. It’s still white, so I suspect it’s got a lot of air in it still, but I think it will work.
If experimenting with acetone, please use outdoors ONLY. Not only is it bad for your health, the vapor is literally explosive in some concentrations.
Can I use the mixture for smoothening the lightly rough surfaces of car's side claddings?
Is this thinner epoxy thinner
good job thank u 4 info

Muito legal parabéns 👏👍🌹🌷🇧🇷
Thank you for the idea. I believe that gasoline or acetone could be used as solvent too.
Hello. Yes, you can use different solvents.
Magnifico...👏👏👏
SOS increíble!!!!!
I think you can add a bit of brake fluid to act as a plastizer so it is less brittle
Would this work well to encapsulate cardboard surface and edges to waterproof projects or be too heavy/thick?
Obrigado pó passar seus conhecimentos deus abençoe vc sempre 🙏🙏🙏

Where do you get Cellulose Thinner Solvent in the USA?
I worked in Africa 20 odd years ago at the mouth of the Congo river. The locals mixed styrofoam with petrol to fill any cracks or splits in their wooden boats. I have wondered if it would be a substitute for glass fibre epoxy ?
I lived in Mali 9 years and the styrofoam/petrol combo was well known there as well.
What were you doing there in Africa ? And where you are now ? Curious, as you must have had many varied experiences. Please elaborate a bit.

Excellent , going to try this on my fairy houses
Hello. Try it. I cover my fairy houses with this solution and I like it. But do not forget to follow safety rules when working with solvent. Protect your lungs and hands and work where there is no open fire.
Interesting! When dissolving the styrofoam, does it create harmful fumes? Thank you!
Hello. The solvent has harmful fumes. That is why it is recommended to work with this substance outdoors or in a well-ventilated room.
Noted! Thank u!

Need to know what kind ( brand )
Of solvent you used in this video
I used thinner and didn’t work
I got a white gum in the bottom,
And the rest was very, very liquid
Thank you so much
Hello. I use a solvent called "SOLVENT n" or "Organic solvent". Also, many people use regular gasoline for this purpose.
I believe lacquer thinner will work.
If you are talking about a solvent for nail polish, it is definitely not suitable. Other solvents should be tested.
Good idea. But can I use xylene as solvent.
I remember my father making this when I was a kid when he ran out of Lacquer. He always had the thinner because back then most of the house paint and wood stains were oil based so he used it for clean up. He couldn’t always afford lacquer so he discovered he could make it with styrofoam. I don’t think he used that much styrofoam though. Is there a minimum amount to use?
Hello. Everyone makes the density of the solution as they see fit. There is no specific amount of ingredients.
Is the thinner, paint thinner?
What do you use on the brush to clean it?
I clean the brush in the same solvent in which I dissolve the styrofoam.
