Nigel Benn 'BATTERS' Best Friend? Was He Guilty of Savage Attack?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- Today we look at a story from the 90s where Nigel Benns flourishing boxing career was put on the line when one time best friend accused him of beating him up leaving him with plastic surgery and over 100 stitches. The accusations could have derailed Benns career and seen him imprisoned for years. The trial took many twists and turns which I document with archive footage in this fascinating story from Britain's Sporting & criminal history.

These fights back on ITV on Saturday nights were immense, Benn,Eubank,Collins etc
"Those" fights.

"Them" fights...😂
@@kennyharris2407 yeah ok ,I feel stupid now,I knew it sounded odd, just couldn't find the right word😞😂
@@Limey_Squirrel huh?
Good old days for sure
Was always a great fan of Nigel and I have never heard any of this, what a surprise, knew he was associated with the Essex boys but this I have never heard about. Thanks as always for the info you give to us!
Iam a eubank man myself always been a fan of his the guy is real character and was a world class fighter.
I was in the nightclub that night , and I didn't even know Benn was there . I only heard about the incident via the newspapers. Looking back, I'm glad I missed the incident
I don't believe nigel Benn fell out with somebody because of their past convictions half the people around him had previous for dealing and other crimes 😅
Exactly TT for starters😂😂😂
Spot on 👏🤣
Very well narrated. Thank you.
Another brilliant video as always
Thanks for this post. The Kings Pub in Ilford was a training ground for many aspiring boxers and the Ilford Palais and the Room at the Top, Blundell's club, were his go to places. If you could find out more about the incident following Paul Ince leaving WHU and giving it he large I would appreciate it.
Sunday lunchtime boxing at the kings hosted by Nigel’s brother Danny. I could tell you many stories about growing up in Ilford.
My Nephews cousin used to box at the King's
Did Ronnie Pickering go there.
@@jamisu5467Who ? 😂😂😂
@@jamisu5467nah. Ronnie wouldna stand for any of that crap. He'd av it large with the lot of em😊😊😊
People forget what beasts Watson and McClellen were. Watson was extremely talented and McClellen was a vicious, once in a generation fighter. If they hadn't had suffered those injuries the 90s middleweight division would've looked very different.
The g man was a serious fighter.
@patocallaghan3648 He was mean, ruthless and capable. He may not have been a very likeable person but if not for the injury, I'm fairly sure he would've dominated that crazy middleweight era. With him and Watson and Collins Benn and Eubank in the mix it mightve even matched the Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Duran middleweight era
@@dannypaterson888 mike mcallum beat watson and collins comfortably. And eubank and benn were on record saying they wanted no parts of james toney.
@ExecutionerHopkins Yes, two more potential MW greats to add to the mix if they would've stuck to that weight class
@@ExecutionerHopkinscollins was only starting out when he fought McCallum .
Benn was a classic example of if you mix with lice you become itchy
True but he’s not the only one a lot of boxers was associated with gangsters it’s always gone on hasn’t it it’s like some footballers they seem to mix in similar circles
I remember this and was a mad Benn fan as well. Remember watching the McLellan fight before I went out clubbing that night and still remember feeling a bit troubled by what I'd watched. It was a savage fight and I've not watched it since
Especially Benn pretending to faint to get out of a drugs test and being carried out by his mates to get away.
McClellan had a fight with Julian Jackson before Benn n that's where most of the damage came from .
But I do agree Benn faked a passout after the fight possibly to get out of a blood test?
How do you know he faked it
@@keithdouglas9848 Definitely.
Enjoyed the upload thank you 🙏
Thankyou mate
The story about not being friends with a former drug dealer ,and hanging around with Tony tucker. Makes no sense. 😂😂😂
What an era for British 🥊
Yep… that ERA of “Prince Naseem Hamid” and his RUN was legendary!!! Best footwork/head speed AND that jab!!!
Never met Benn but remember when I was in my very early 20s and was staying in Ilford as part of life experience jobwise in the early 80s and he had a reputation locally as being violent towards women, so never really took an interest in him but was and still am an avid boxing fan.
Nigel was my ex father in laws delroys old sparring partner...small world as i met carlton few years before my ex wife.. this life everyone knows everyone..
Wkd vid as per usual keep up the good work .God bless
Ink in water
@@benitolazio8193 what does that mean with all due respect. ,?
Where did Delroy spaa with Nigel. Do you remember Lloyd Daay Nigel's friend.
Benn - Gerald McClellan fight still the roughest I've ever seen.
On here somewhere.
So Benn was worried about Sullivan's drug dealing while hanging around with Tony Tucker and his cronies?
The second fight had PMS security at MUFC, Quality Fight, Quality Fighter's Quality content
I didn't know about the full details, thanks mate...Great video again..
My 2 favourite fighters back in the day Lennox Lewis and Nigel Benn...I think I've watched all their fights... True warriors..
When people boxers fought not just for cash but honour and glory..
Far better entertainment than the average boxer of today...
Spot on mate that Benn Mcllelan fight unreal, loved Bruno aswell
@@enquirer2.0 that was one of the hardest fights l have ever seen.McClellan was one tough cookie.it’s a pity the condition he ended up in after the fight.top stuff as always dude.keep up the great work fella.best wishes to you and yours.
@enquirer2.0 I fully agree, when Benn got knocked through the ropes, I thought oh S...the come back was one of the greatest come backs of that era, aame as Eubank vs Watson, Watson was well winning that second fight, till the knockout..
Benn Eubank 2....Benn was robbed in my opinion ..
Let's not forget later, Joe C..the fighting welshman and the unbelievable Ste Collins, do you remember Nicky Piper?
Brilliant video again brother respect YNWA
I remember when I used to live in London in the 90s , I was not far from Arsenal football Club, I was living on Horsley road, and when weekends came we used to go to the paradise club just at the back of Highbury Corner Islington, and some weeks we used to go to a club in the Westend of London I don't remember the name of the club but it had kind of nets hanging out of the ceiling and Nigel Benn used to come in with a shit load of bouncers he would be doing the DJ Garage music 🎶🎶🎶 to be honest he was shit but I remember his goons would push you away if you were dancing near the stage on the dance floor his goons would always be looking for a fight from people I was just a teenager back then but I clearly remember it , and I was living in Manchester in 96/97 and he was fighting Steve Collins I was at that fight that night, Prince Nassim was fighting on the same card as Benn , if I'm right Benn never got of his seat in round 6 and the people ring side started throwing bottle of water into the ring that night, lol just thought I'd say that to you bro,
Nice recollecting memories mate yes he didn't see the collins fight out
@enquirer2.0 did Collins beat him twice he apparently injured his foot.
It hits different when it's a disloyal friend
Used to get in Legends a lot, back in the day, good club
I always admired Benn’s physical appearance.Good fighter and easy on the eye.
Hiya !🍇🍉🍊🍌
Ya wha
As always, a good video: observation that a sport such as boxing will have its fair share of characters: people on the outside wanting to be seen with the champ: against the few who stay with the champ especially if they lose the bout: it continues to this day whereby jealousies tests friendships: as Nigel found to his cost: as some one once said having observed AJ's crew of trainers: managers: friends: everyone wants their cut: piece of the action:
I think it was in danny woolards book that Benn wasn`t liked in the east end.Barry dalton was metioned as having a some kind of problem with him.Of course Benn is a very different person nowadays.
Yes think Danny did mention that in his book
Barry Dalton had issues with Lenny M too.
I remember the amateur boxing nights on tv in 87 and Nigel Benn appeared on the last few shows. He was a quantum leap from the rest and did exactly what I thought and that was to be one of our greats.Benn put Macelland in hospital in that epic fight. The fights against Eubank were epic and I remember Eubank struggling to talk after he won the first fight, his face was battered .
Those two fights were unreal Eubank Benn
@@enquirer2.0 and let’s not forget Micheal Watson fight with Eubank.
Pete defratuse talks about it on a utube interview
Benn wasn't a nice person. I see him few times in the phoenix apollo in stratford and ffs he was so flash and cocky and extremely arrogant.... i did hear that a certain local face put it on benn in ilford and he completely melted
Gil & Panni owned it and Nigel's manager PDF did the door on special occasions.
Benn isn’t the type to melt.
@robiulahmed OK then. Take it from me he melted
@@robiulahmedhe melted against Steve Collins .
Find it hard to believe that he was hanging around Tony tucker Carlton leach and other undesirables, was a loose cannon himself ,was a vicious fighter inside the ring, used to get up off the floor and smash opponents and wasn't on the gear...Yeah right
Both Benns , drug cheats , what happened to Nigel's piss test after he rasberried Mc Lellan?
Absolutely spot on
Benn and eubank, Incredible boxers, fought to the end.
I can't see Benn being bothered about his mate's previous drug convictions considering he was close mate's with Tony Tucker and Carlton Leach .
I remember when Benn sued the Evening Standard and I think the police too when they took a photo of him which they turned into a drawing and used it as a description of a mugger. I recall someone was said to have tackled him, causing him an injury but I think Benn may have made that bit up to get more compensation. After all, who goes around tackling people because they look like a photo-fit?
Yes heard that story to
Evening Standard in correct call shocker!
ROLEX RAYS A GRASS
Ben was a legend but ut could not lase joe calzage gloves
Explain that
That comment has become very boring now.
Money can buy freedom in courts that’s a fact 😂
Benn was a semi gangster type he knew a lot in the underworld anyone should read his book not bad
Ben was old school monster in any era 🏴🥊
Benn used to live in beckenham his old neighbour said he was a nice fellow so you can't believe everything you here very sad about Gerald mclelland same with michael Watson!
Means nothing .How you behave towards your neighbour in Beckenham isn't how you behave 24/7
Michael Watson from that era, for me he was the best, such a masterful boxer...
Your probley right mate ! Watson was a great boxer
Michael Watson lived around Stoke Newington in north London where i grew up. He used to train in a local park called Clissold Park, saw him numerous times both before and after his tragic fight.
Yes Watson was the best of that era
Technically probably the best boxer out of Eubank an Benn
@@Jordan1223_ Yep, though Nigel Benn was never technically the best boxer anyway.
Still one of my favorite fighters, but we also know he liked to scrap in the streets difficult one to call could he done it sure.. But I wasn't there....
Went MofS with Benn. When introduced he said "I know you, your the bloke with the dogs." Pitbulls.
Money can buy anything !!!
I remember my mates older brother coming back from a rave and telling us Nigel Benn was at the rave and on acid, not sure if it's true lol, this would have been around 1991 / 2 I think...
Used to see Benn out clubbing in Hackney in the 90's, i remember he had a white BMW. It was no secret that Benn liked to indulge in certain South American substances. Exact same with another well known boxer Frank Bruno who ended up having a major substance problem which the British media covered up for years.
Its true
rolex ray took a liberty i was around both of them at the time i use to go out with nigel go to his apartment rave with him even meeting up with him in tennerife when he was fighting henry wharton he loved east london guys around him his a nice guy but a very hot temper
Benn got knocked out by Big Brian Cockerill at a club one night by Big Bri’s famous corkscrew uppercut
😂😂
Collins best in division
And Roy Jones Jr ??
Ray had a Ticket agency in Charing Cross Road
Ray had T16ket on his Bentley My brother and I bought T12KET and T13KET
I had to meet a fella at Silverstone @ the Grand Prix once for Ray and give x2 VIP tickets to a half caste guy with white hair a Very powerful man he was driving a blue Ferrari called Ian D
I understand that he was involved in this fracas and knocked NB Out saving Ray from further injury
That was what I recall being told at the time anyway 😎😎😎😎
@mattlegg
man benns cte has really made his lisp 10 times worse now unfortunately he sounds like a mix between muhummad ali and donald duck
Sorry to tell you this , but some of your owen story isent really actually at all completely right or true aswell about what went on happend between ray being attacked by benn that night with a few situations that i no about myself ok hope you dont mind me just letting you no that thank gezzer
tripe
Is he african?.
Nigel was always scared of eubank
Is that why he had a fight with him twice?
Utter nonsense 🙄
The only time I gambled money and won was in high school when I bet on Eubank beating Benn, twice.
Is there anyone that was a savage as Benn at the same weight? I've seen South Americans with that ferocious overhand and movement, but not at that weight. Incredible.
Marvin Hagler.
@@craigrothwell6144 Good shout. Only see him versus Hearns in that classic. Will have to check out more.
@@LondonLawyers That was when Hearns broke into a dance routine, pretending to be punch drunk!!
Tucker was his mate... so probably yeh!
