this was the best tsonga's match for his entire career. every player has that on certain time
2011 Wimbledon vs. Federer
@@sasook pretty good match too but against Nadal he just had a dominance that make everybody feels he could not lost the match !
@@samuel29780 True but it was Nadal on hard court (a surface he didn’t have a single slam on back then) whereas Fed in 2011 was a 6 time grass champion & favorite for the tournament after he took out Novak in the FO that year. He was playing great & really should’ve won that tournament but Tsonga just played amazing & couldn’t lose, especially coming back from 0-2 sets.
@@sasook You're right ! But if we focus only on Tsonga's performance, I think he played better at AO 2008 against Nadal... He said himself that he was in a mental way that allowed him to play his best tennis this day but he never recovered this since this match...
2nd best, i think. His Wimbledon win against Fed was 1st, imo. While this one was more surprising and entertaining, Tsonga was a big man with a power stoke; and as we know, those guys will occasionally feast on Nadal with his high bouncing strokes. While Nadal was #2 seed, the tale of the tape favored Tsonga. The win against Fed, on the other hand, was against the best, on his best surface, playing well: and Tsonga still overcame. But this night was Tsonga's introduction to the world; the one that put him on the map.
I cannot think of another match in a Grand Slam in which Nadal, who was in actually very good form and not playing badly at all, was so humiliated. Tsonga‘s volleys were just insane and his forehand vicious af!
Uso 2009 against delpotro
Remember Nadal vs Dustin Brown (not sure if it was a Slam though)
@@adedejiadesida5091 yeah it was wimbledon 2015...rafa was clueless in that match
@@adedejiadesida5091 Yes, but he still won a set and was playing average overall that year. Here Rafa was in his prime in terms of movement. However, this is his second worst defeat in grand slam, his worst defeat ever in grand slam came against Del Potro at US Open 2009, where he lost 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. Del Po's forehand was on another galaxy that day, two days later he won his first and only grand slam against Federer
In 2009 against Del Potro, he was actually a bit injured (abdominals I think), so it was unfortunate for him. But here, as already said, he was almost in prime form, no injury, had a superb year later on etc. And Tsonga still wiped the floor with him so brutally…
Nobody expected this sort of dominance from a newcomer. It was a monumental upset as he just outplayed Rafa in that match
Tsonga, delpotro on their day can hurt any players including the big 3 on non clay courts.. Big serve, big forehand, 70% of first serves in and the opponent is done & dusted... Honorable mention is Stan in this list where he can particularly decimate novak on his day
I missed a lot Del Potro, one of the kindest player ever.
Clown is always obsessed with novak.
Novak is the goat, 24!!
Nalbandian did it too
Nadal is injured
Hat off to Tsonga. I remembered checking the score when i was in college. Truly unexpected. What a performance. I was so proud.
Final 2008 in full next please!
Tsonga play one of the best matches of career against Nadal in semi final Ao and agains Federer in qf of Wimbledon 2011, when he comeback from 2-0 in sets. Both of that times Djokovic destroyed him in later phase. GOAT NOLE 🐐🐐🐐
AO 2010 ?
Great win for Wilfred , such a nice down to earth human being 👏😊
Tsonga’s volley was fenomenal!!!
Thanks for the upload 😊
15:24 If it was Djokovic not Nadal, Djokovic gave Tsonga that point not replay.

Oh my word ! Tsonga was insanely good in that match ! Truly the best French player.
From a French person that just loves tennis so much :)
Never seen or heard of this match before. I knew he was in the finals but I never even checked to see how he got into the finals. Wow this match was an epic. How is this match not talked about?
In France, everybody still remembers it :) Tsonga was ranked 38th, but beat Murray in the first round, Nadal in semifinals, and lost only to Djoko in finals in 4 sets (after winning the 1st one).
@@Poney01234 Oh yes he had a good run. Back in those days we did get to watch all the matches.
I wish the full match of this awesomeness is uploaded...
came here after seeing his retirement speech. God i feel old now.
its only me or Jo looks like Muhammed Ali in this thumbnail?
That's his nickname - Ali, because of the resemblance.
o:
this tsonga has the best touch ever, insane
I loved Tsonga's style. He could have been an all-time great. But other coaches really exploited his lack of speed and figured him out.
What a game
Tu nous auras fait rêver plus d’une fois Jo 🇫🇷💪🏻
On the eve of his retirement from a great career, do Jo a solid, Australian Open Tv...upload the entire match.
Quel match...
Even after witnessing such insane volleys from a freshman opponent, Nadal didn't applaud the quality even once. Shows the real sportsmanship and thinking of him.
In fact I have never seen Nadal or Federer applaud any opponent point. I mean I guess it happened, but so rarely compared to Novak it is quite surprising especially when the first two are always presented as the good guys and Novak the super villain.. (well it is changing a bit lately with all Djoko is achieving)
God you guys are ridiculous. Djokovic hit a ball at a lineswoman’s throat, throws tantrums and screams regularly, but when Nadal doesn’t applaud an opponent’s shot he has “terrible sportsmanship”.
@@SJ-di5zu We are discussing Nadal here. Why do you bring Djokovic's name to show Nadal's behaviour?
@@gabsave Because I can :D
A player not applauding an opponent does not mean the player has bad sportsmanship.
Thanks for the upload....but please get someone better to do the highlights edit. Double faults? UE's??
Nadal totalmente borrado del court por un tipo que jugaba el circuito challenger.
Nadie podía pensar que iba a ser 1 luego de wimbledon...
It's definitely worth noting how much Nadal's mental toughness- which was already higher than most then- has only gotten better since this match.
1:56 what a emergency shot from Nadal, unbelievable!
Ali bumaye
One of the greatest upsets of the 21st century! Surprisingly so many of these came against Rafa only. Gonzalez AO 2007, Rosol and Dustin Brown at Wimbledon, delpo at USO. But this one was surely the most impressive.
Novak Rg loss to Thiem 2014 and in 2018. Then he lost to some italian or russian player in 2017 or in 2019 .
He was as they say in the NBA in a zone! He would’ve won the AO had he played like this against Djokovic
Que jugador tsonga
Thumbnail picture title says "2018" but it's 2008, as described in the video title.
Tsonga así es como le debe jugar a Nadal muy buen partido
I think tsonga is one of the top player who wasted his talent. His serve is better than many top seeded, his back hand, forehand, placement are absolute outstanding.
The transformation of Rafa between this match and the final the next year against Fed is crazy.
I remember this match, was very shocked to see Nadal get handled like this!
Wow, Tsonga also beat Murray on the first round (despite eating a donut in third set), impressive, his peak ?!
How many times since the start of his incredible career has Rafael been so outplayed in a loss? In my opinion 5/6 times maximum. This is to say the extraordinary performance of Jo-Wilfried that day.
Tsonga had every tool in the bag to cause damage to Nadal - Big serve, Strong reliable BH, Huge FH, but the icing on the cake was the volleying.
But not on clay.
Power vs Power.
Nadal has topspin, but Tsonga has flat strike.
Great match. I keep forgetting the time when Nadal used to wear those shorts. lol
Love Tsonga. Love Nadal too.
Adidas boys defeated the nikes in this tournament 😁💪🖤🤍🖤🤍
Nowadays it is Lacoste and Uniqlo for Novak and Roger. Novak went to Uniqlo then Lacoste. A lot has changed
Tsonga exploited Rafa's biggest weakness. Rafa always covers his backhand side on the return so it's relatively easy for a big server to simply go to the open forehand side everytime. You have to be brave to go for it time and again especially big points. But I can't understand how / why everyone didn't do this throughout Rafa's career especially on faster courts! So many easy aces / unreturned serves just due to positional factor!
22:06 🤯
Time stamp - 18 minutes - Rafa 2 sets to love down - 15-40 on serve - 3rd set.. imagine if he could pull this around and win the match! Thats what he did in 2022 finals - hattss off! He was so negative in 2008- if you go back to that 3rd set in 2022, he was pumping his fists and rarely showed any negative emotions even when down.
Imagine Tsonga instead of Murray in the big 4
I mean Murray was a better player so why imagine
I remember this Tsonga. It felt like Muhammad Ali was on the court for a moment.
AO 2022 nadal would beat AO 2008 tsonga and nadal
Hell no. On hard maybe, but on clay 2008 nadal >>>>> 2022 nadal
@@user-cy6xl3vd3f Even on hard, I don't think so. 2008 Nadal was so much faster than 2022 Nadal. As he got older, he declined in foot speed
Didn’t Tsonga beat Federer at Wimby also ? One his day, a great player, but fragile physically (injury prone)

Nadal was dropping the ball really short using the forehand. That was the problem.

Rafa peaked at right about 0-30 in the first game here, future looked bright... All downhill from there.
Wow. Beating Nadal when he was still in full energy. What an incredible performance from Tsonga. I bet if he was born in non-Big3 era, he would achieve at least 3 or 4 GS.
Nadal handshake is salty af
Rafa must be injured at that time , that is why he lost
Your brain is injured 🤡.
He was clay court specialist in his early days. His game wasn't suited for hard courts. He adjusted his forehand for hard courts in 2010. Also his serve.

this is not prime Nadal fool. the following year in 09 in Melbourne maybe...and 2010 us open Nadal was definitely prime son
@@mohanish well nadal achieved a 81 winning streak on clay between 2005 and 2007. He also won the 2008 French open without dropping a single set. Not to mention his historic wimbledon final against federer. Tough to say that he wasn't in his prime.
Liked your comment man😂😂
@@mohanish 2008, one of the greatest seasons of Nadal’s entire career, wasn’t his prime? LOL

Tsonga played awesome - totally destroyed and humiliated Nadal, pity Tsonga couldn't win against Djoker in the final
Nadal could have won this
Djokovic had lucky that Tsonga won this match

This was the match of his life. It’s too bad he didn’t play like this in the final against Weakvak… it’s like Popeyes wasting his Spanish, the gummy bears wasting gummy juice, the green ranger morphing for putties and then getting destroyed by the monster when the power coin runs out of power… Tsonga used all his powers for GOATdal and had nothing left against Weakvak 😂
Take your booster sheep. Make sure you don’t miss any of them. 100% safe and effective
That "weakvak" of your naming has defeated and beaten your "goatdal" or "strongdal" 30 times and has lost to him 28 times, remember AO 2012 Novak survived the longest final in grand slam history (5h 53m) against this exact same Rafa... i wouldn't call him weakvak infact "strongvak" 💯 now if you hate Djokovic so much why do you mention him in EVERY single comment you post... i think you are either obsessed with hating on him or you are jealous of his achievements and him beating your rafa 30 times
how ironic it is that the ones who are still afraid of this bullshit virus and pissed that Nole has integrity and doesn’t bend the knee to politics are vaccinated against it 😅😅😅
