equarg, you are absolutely 1000% right. I was born just shortly after WW2 where my father was an Air Force pilot, flying bombardiers at that time. I will always remember him talking about seeking out the place where he was ordered to drop bombs in Italy. My mother, on the way to one place he remembered from WW2, sang for all the people on the ship the song "White Cliffs of Dover" as they approached the very place, sang a very sentimental song of the war. Dad said that everyone onboard was absolutely silent as she sang and that all had tears streaming down their cheeks. My father wept at the gravesides of those people who were killed by his bombs and fire - both Americans and others. A great memory for me to see my badass father's sentimental side, rarely seen. But sadness as well for the people who lived and died there.
Basically no bluffing necessary, with millions of Red Army soldiers behind them they probably also would’ve surrendered to the Girl Scouts of the USA...
@@Idgamer3000 Well what do you think to whom the German soldiers preferred to surrender? The Red Army or the US military? During the last weeks of the war a lot of German and other Axis troops fought to reach the western allies to surrender to them instead of the Red Army or partisans etc.
the general of the german army located in the city was very smart aswell. by choosing to surrender to the american army, it meant that many of the officers could eventally go home to their families. If they surrendered to the russians, they would likely be incarcerated for life, executed or destroyed in the fight that would have ensued.
I wouldn't be so sure. Check out the book "Other Losses" by James Bacque. He looks into the intentional starving to death of a couple million German soldiers in Allied open air prison camps after the war.
TexBoy, youre missing the point. If they stood and fought it wouldn't have been against the 3 men! The 3 star made the right choice to surrender then and there than to rather suffer the Russian artillery bombardments and the quantity of the Russian military force.
"Other Losses" should not be used for any academic purposes. The author twisted the figures by extremely over exaggerating the numbers and misinterpreted the reasons why the deaths occurred. Starvation and food shortage were unavoidable after 6 years of war in Europe. There was no way to circumvent the tragedy which was why America had to enact the Marshall Plan to help rebuild the continent.

Phillip Burr Yes Old Americans use the word Krauts like Sauerkraut in Archie Bunkers show “all in the family” Archie a World War 2 Veteran still refers to the Germans as Krauts
@Jerry Gonzales Once again, I was just pointing out that the subtitles incorrectly used the word "crowds" instead of the actual spoken word "Krauts". I wasn't making any comment other than that. The subtitle person got it wrong. That's all I was saying.
Capturing large amounts of soldiers was far from unusual. When they were outmaneuvered or out of equipment in a bad spot; most men on any side choose to surrender, especially when a war is going bad.

I saw this on the history channel awesome story, but they left out the best part. The German General handing the captain his German Luger Pistol after surrendering. Now that's a souvenir.
That wasn't a trick. The Germans knew the horror stories about the Russians more than anyone, and were probably pissed themselves thankful the Americans got to them first. They just had to put up a little sass first before surrendering.
He didn't Trick them, he told them Straight UP: Surrender to US (survive) or Surrender to the Russians (die). He DID have back-up just over the hill and the Germans were the lucky ones to run into him and get the chance to surrender to the US. If he did not go up to the Germans, they would have been killed or sent to a Siberian Gulag...

Joshua Thompson not too unique. Orders were to take no surrenders, but to direct all Berlin sector surrenders to Russian forces. The Germans made many unit decisions to force their surrender on unwilling Americans to avoid the Russians.
i cant even imagine the amount of people saved by this mans quick thinking. nor can i imagine how hes able to stand with those massive balls of steel. nothing but total respect.

Night, You need to learn history, This is true and if you cant find it on the internet doesn't means its fake. lots of stories of WW2 are not on the internet but they are true.
Nighterlev, It's clear that your thoughts are biased on this topic. You try to use reason or logic to persuade people to believe that it is fake yet you have no proof to back up your claims. It's as if you do not want the idea of Germans being tricked, so you argue to prove that they aren't and was never tricked.
Cams Vikings. How does it feel to be a little bitch over a stupid comment? My guess is you feed off of what the western media tells with all their lies and propaganda.
Break rules and get rewarded Obey orders and get rewarded... with the destruction of many families. This man helped 15,000 enemies and I hope he rests in peace
School Kid - You are right. 15,000 German men were able to go home to their families. The Russians would have killed every one of them. The German government should have thanked this man and given him a medal. The war was already lost for the Germans. What this man did may have been interpreted as a "trick", but it turned out to be an act of compassion. May he rest in peace.
Illusions. "get them next time". The us allone gets nothing. The russians won the war. In Normandy the brits and esp. the canadiens face the german armour. The US soldiers faced mostly old men and Young men with the Age of 16 or 17 years old. Most of first line german troops fought in the east. If you had a Military knowledge, you would know it. In a 1:1 Situation, your Boys were beaten quickly. thats the historic truth. In the ardennes, first two days without the airforce, your Boys shit in theyr Pants. About 18.000 surrender. And they come all home healthy. Do you understand that?
philosophy talk or don't talk with me there's is no need to call me and idiot where is your manners because you very likely lack them. I was saying what if, I was talking like I wonder how and if. I never stated that it was a loss or some shit like that so next time don't call someone an idiot when you clearly misunderstand. I am fascinated about history and I want to know both sides that doesn't mean I want to change history smh
He didn't trick anyone, they knew they were going to loose and were just waiting to surrender. They cried of tears when they found out they surrendered to the Americans and not the Soviets who would torture their prisoners.
Final year off WWII just outside of Berlin: American Col. drives up to a Panzer corp., American demand he surrenders, German General already knows he is outnumbered by thousands and thousands, and now has been told he is surrounded, German takes the humane choice and doesn't let his men die in vain, All terms are accepted, 2017 June: German general cries in his coffin, because the Americans are making him seem stupid for saving 15,000 (and more on the allied side), And making the his men seem foolish for following his orders,
yeah .. but generally the "looser" gets depicted as idiotic i mean if hitler won ww2 they would not say it was foolish to attack the USSR but hey he lost .. and its easier to say that afterwards .. you know like that one guy that always says "i knew it" after it happened
Ya I guess it's just how humans tick. And it's all the worse that Americans who won't shut up about freedom and justice, to go and take away the shread of pride this guy had
Mr.October i agree the real hero is the German general he knew what he was doing, had he waited till the soviet's arrived it would have been an absolute blood bath.
Tara King It isn't ingenuity... The Germans had been trying to get a conditional surrender with the Americans so they can focus on the Russians. They *wanted* to surrender to the Americans
This is true courage, wit and strength displayed by a thoughtful soldier. How much we need this kind of thinking today in order to take a better course in a troubled world.
This guy didn't "trick" the Germans. As he himself said, he told them they would soon be surrendering to the US or Soviets and that's an easy choice. The headline is misleading, though the story is interesting.
He did trick them. He only had a company behind him facing a German Divison. The German General clearly though he had more that 150 men. And then when presented the opportunity on who to surrender to, of course he would pick the Americans
Sheep: Then he did *not* "trick" the Germans (in the sense of misleading the Germans into doing something they didn't want to do or regretted doing). "Here, Mr. Krauthead -- I'm the Americans and its either us or the Soviets, your choice." As *you yourself* said "And then when presented the opportunity on who to surrender to, of course he would pick the Americans." Where is the "trickery"? If the Germans wanted to surrender (as they clearly did), surrendering to 15 Americans is as good as surrendering to 150 or 1500 or 15000. It is an interesting vignette about the end of the war, but no one was "tricked" and it is gilding the lily to say the clever American "tricked" the thick-headed Germans. Fox news lied in their headline as clickbait.
They were tricked, them saying they had an army of tanks and paratroopers behind them is the trick, if you can't get that through your head i don't know what to tell you that's clearly tricking them. Yes they would rather not surrender to the russians but if they knew how few Americans were actually there they could have easily killed them and regrouped with more germans, but the way the captain made it seem was there wasn't any escape possible, it's either be killed by an army of Americans or be killed by an army of Russians surrender now or die later. The Germans clearly wanted to surrender is that why they were joking about three guys in a jeep at first? Then when they heard how many men the Americans had they stopped joking and starting getting their general involved. It's funny you think the Panzer Corps would surrender to 14,850 less Americans just to avoid the Russians, clearly if they would have known there was only 150 Americans there choice would have been different.
Med: You should be on your meds. The Germans weren't "tricked", this American says it himself. As you said: "Yes they would rather not surrender to the russians but if they knew how few Americans were actually there they could have easily killed them and regrouped with more germans," *and do WHAT, Med? Being "grouped" together would only have one marginal advantage: if the Germans were afraid of being massacred, the more of them there were together at one time, the less likely for an ad hoc massacre by a hotheaded enemy eager for vengeance.* You're simply wrong, I see no point to debating this -- but idiots like you abound here on the 'Tube.
2 questions. 1. How the hell did he speak with the Germans? Did he speak German? Did the Germans speak English? 2. I know he's a real hero for doing what he did. And not that I disagree with him disobeying orders. But he didn't get in serious trouble with his other superiors?
Jdabomb93 pretty good most likely. Dont forget the united states is a country of immigrants. Also the german officer was a general it would be foolish to think he did not have at least one person on his staff who spoke english if he did not himself. He may have been reprimanded, he may not have. Thats the way the military works. Sometimes they look the other way if the outcome was a pretty good one.
cougar10ag You make very valid points, thank you for your constructive criticism. I'm glad it didn't have to be a typical ugly UA-cam argument. Seriously thanks. I was entirely sure about the military's knowing each others languages at that time. So I'm glad you clarified it for me. I wish this veteran made it clear though. Plus I don't support the military, so I find it hypocritical when they let men slide with disobeying orders. Even if the outcome is awesome like this. But anyway, thanks for the comment.
Jdabomb93 why dont you support the military? I served so i have a different point of view. As far as disobeying orders, it's not always that simple. An order from a commander who isnt on the ground has no idea what is going on. They dont always have the full picture and the situation is always fluid so sometimes disobeying orders is in the best interest of saving lives or completing the mission. Especially during a time when many communications were by runners because there was no on the fly radio encryption like there is now. Even today with abundance of rapid communication commanders still dont have a full picture.
@@daineisenfuss5696 He was talking about lives on all sides. After all, all the men fighting on every side was drafted and had to fight for their country even if they didn't want to be there. The Germans did the right choice to surrender to the Americans and not the Russians. If they didn't surrender, they would have all been killed and many lives would have also been lost on the American and Russian armys.

Nighterlev do you realize that he just didn't tell anybody about it?
Nighterlev I believe it was recounted (that means re-told) in the book "Killing Patton" which was based on real facts researched for a long time before being published. I could be wrong on this, but I do knows that I've heard this story before.
Nighterlev Would you think a ww2 vet would lie about a story like this? You have to show respect you pig

He said "Krauts" not "crowds".
Phillip Burr I agree!
PC police caught it
Phillip Burr Yes Old Americans use the word Krauts like Sauerkraut in Archie Bunkers show “all in the family” Archie a World War 2 Veteran still refers to the Germans as Krauts
@@drzoidberg844 Uh... yeah I know. The subtitles said "crowds" when he clearly said "Krauts". That's all I was saying.
@Jerry Gonzales Once again, I was just pointing out that the subtitles incorrectly used the word "crowds" instead of the actual spoken word "Krauts". I wasn't making any comment other than that. The subtitle person got it wrong. That's all I was saying.
He doesn't say crowds like the cc implies he actually says Krouts which is a term used form German soldiers

This guy: "Bitch, me and my buddy captured 15,000 soldiers in one afternoon."
Capturing large amounts of soldiers was far from unusual. When they were outmaneuvered or out of equipment in a bad spot; most men on any side choose to surrender, especially when a war is going bad.
Arcaryon Not 15000 though.

Now that's a souvenir.
I’m his grandson. It’s mounted on the wall of my dad’s (his son) home office.
That wasn't a trick. The Germans knew the horror stories about the Russians more than anyone, and were probably pissed themselves thankful the Americans got to them first. They just had to put up a little sass first before surrendering.

thanks to his bravery Europe can now be flooded with muslims and africans! They really did us a good service!

Night, You need to learn history, This is true and if you cant find it on the internet doesn't means its fake. lots of stories of WW2 are not on the internet but they are true.
Nighterlev How do you just make up a story like this? What kind of brain wakes up and thinks, “I’m gonna say I captured a whole Panzer corps.”
Nighterlev Okay Boss.
Nighterlev,
It's clear that your thoughts are biased on this topic.
“Want me to take him back?” 🤣🤣🤣
To be honest,it gave the Germans an easy out. It’s a long walk to Siberia!
Much respect to this man and everyone who fought so we can have what we have today
Break rules and get rewarded
Obey orders and get rewarded... with the destruction of many families.
Just think about all the lives saved from that
Germans: mission failed we'll get em next time
Dank illusions I see what you did there
Götz v. Überlingen OMG chill dude he was referring to COD WW2 that is a line from the game lol it was a joke 😂😂😂😂
west front was still vital, imagine how much resources the germans woulda been privy to otherwise

Haha he tricked every one
He didn't trick anyone, they knew they were going to loose and were just waiting to surrender. They cried of tears when they found out they surrendered to the Americans and not the Soviets who would torture their prisoners.

Having a strong attitude and speaking the correct words at the correct time can do more than you think.
WOW, so many stories you could spend a lifetime hearing and never get bored. YUP, another hero
Final year off WWII just outside of Berlin:
American Col. drives up to a Panzer corp.,
American demand he surrenders,
German General already knows he is outnumbered by thousands and thousands, and now has been told he is surrounded,
German takes the humane choice and doesn't let his men die in vain,
All terms are accepted,
2017 June:
German general cries in his coffin, because the Americans are making him seem stupid for saving 15,000 (and more on the allied side),
And making the his men seem foolish for following his orders,
yeah .. but generally the "looser" gets depicted as idiotic i mean if hitler won ww2 they would not say it was foolish to attack the USSR but hey he lost .. and its easier to say that afterwards .. you know like that one guy that always says "i knew it" after it happened
Ya I guess it's just how humans tick. And it's all the worse that Americans who won't shut up about freedom and justice, to go and take away the shread of pride this guy had
loser* not looser.
Eric Harper Very helpful, now would you like to contribute to the conversation?
Mr.October i agree the real hero is the German general he knew what he was doing, had he waited till the soviet's arrived it would have been an absolute blood bath.

AMAZING. How does anyone downvote this?
They are Russians. Lol
Maybe they're downvoting the totally unnecessary music playing in background, too loud compared to the men's voice.
This is true courage, wit and strength displayed by a thoughtful soldier. How much we need this kind of thinking today in order to take a better course in a troubled world.
“Im here to accept your surrender” - Captain America
This guy didn't "trick" the Germans. As he himself said, he told them they would soon be surrendering to the US or Soviets and that's an easy choice.
The headline is misleading, though the story is interesting.
Yes he did. They would have shot him and his two men otherwise. And they would have fought the Russians, not surrendered.
He did trick them. He only had a company behind him facing a German Divison. The German General clearly though he had more that 150 men. And then when presented the opportunity on who to surrender to, of course he would pick the Americans
Sheep:
Then he did *not* "trick" the Germans (in the sense of misleading the Germans into doing something they didn't want to do or regretted doing).
"Here, Mr. Krauthead -- I'm the Americans and its either us or the Soviets, your choice."
As *you yourself* said "And then when presented the opportunity on who to surrender to, of course he would pick the Americans."
Where is the "trickery"?
Med:
You should be on your meds.
The Germans weren't "tricked", this American says it himself.
As you said: "Yes they would rather not surrender to the russians but if they knew how few Americans were actually there they could have easily killed them and regrouped with more germans,"
*and do WHAT, Med? Being "grouped" together would only have one marginal advantage: if the Germans were afraid of being massacred, the more of them there were together at one time, the less likely for an ad hoc massacre by a hotheaded enemy eager for vengeance.*
You're simply wrong, I see no point to debating this -- but idiots like you abound here on the 'Tube.
This guy just maxed out his speech skill
Imagine that. A simple bluff saved thousands of lives on both sides.
Hell. I can't even get my cat to surrender the catnip

2 questions.
1. How the hell did he speak with the Germans? Did he speak German? Did the Germans speak English?
2. I know he's a real hero for doing what he did. And not that I disagree with him disobeying orders. But he didn't get in serious trouble with his other superiors?
you act like english and german are two obscure languages. many people on both sides spoke english and german.
cougar10ag
Right. But what are the chances that these Germans spoke English or vice versa. Ya know?
And can you answer my second question?
Jdabomb93 pretty good most likely. Dont forget the united states is a country of immigrants. Also the german officer was a general it would be foolish to think he did not have at least one person on his staff who spoke english if he did not himself.
He may have been reprimanded, he may not have. Thats the way the military works. Sometimes they look the other way if the outcome was a pretty good one.
cougar10ag
You make very valid points, thank you for your constructive criticism.
