Power Drill + Snare Drum = Tone??? Testing out Vented Shells & Heads
Ever wanted to get that iconic late 90's/early 00's Vented Snare sound? Today I drill down (pun intended) into how you can capture the vibe of those vented heavy ply shells popularised by OCDP back in the day. We make our own DIY version of an Evans Dry head to see whether you can get the same sound without drilling into a drum shell, and of course - we attack a poor Dixon snare with a power drill.
Some interesting results! Let me know what you think in the comments!

How the F*ck do you use the Tune-Bot???

If you've been around my channels for a while, you'll know that the tunebot features heavily in all of my tuning videos and snare tone deep dives. In this 25min video, I detail what I find so useful about the Tune-Bot, address some common misconceptions, demonstrate how I use it on a beautiful Evetts spotted g...

Great demo. The SMT sounds deeper but missing the "click". A better patch instead of the Evans is the Aquarian "Kick Pad" or their "Super Thin". I tried an Evans E-Mad and didn't like it and when I put their brand patch that came with it it was terrible. I think the Aquarian Super Kick 2 is close to the PS3 or at least I like the sound of both. Again, great content!

I've never seen such a good video on vented snares man. This was super interesting to see the tone change in real time. Love them. I'm the same as you. Grew up on Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones and Slipknot etc. All the OCDP snares. The John Otto snare of 98 and 99 is my favourite drum sound of all time. Same with the IOWA snare. I've owned a Spaun 13x5 acrylic vented snare and I loved it but it never quite worked in my band for some reason. I have always preferred popcorn snares for some reason. My favourite is my 12x7 Mapex Black Panther. I've played about a million gigs with it and I will always love it. My old band even gigged with Life Pilot a couple of times! But yeah the Black Panther gets me that cranked-to-oblivion limp bizkity tone without the vents

Especially considering how many legend drummers and producers have stated that tuning your drums to fit into a certain pitch of a song can make a massive difference in overall production. If the song is in a specific key, why wouldn't you start by tuning your drums to a key that will compliment it rather than muddying it up? Just my take. Another solid video, dude.

@@EliGreenDrums I actually found the video on your instagram not long after commenting this and it is very insightful so thank you for that! I agree it would be a lot of work, but would be cool to do a big Tom tuning video!

I'm 15 and I've got a tune-bot since a few weeks! And man it helped me a lot to increase the drum sound! Love this tool! 🤘🤘🤘

thanks for the video, great reminders of the useful settings to get better results. I love using it together with the app - the suggested tunings really help you focus on the differences between reso/batter relationships, trying new tunings, and coping the tunings of tune-bot artists. For gigs I find the tone that I like for that group of tunes and write the numbers right on the head - touch up at intermission if there is one, or get it right back to the same tone the next night. As you mentioned, the sound guy loves it -- me too!

How awesome is that! The app is super useful and very underrated. Great to see someone else using it in the same manner!

This is one of the most comprehensive tuning videos I've seen. I've playing with this little machine for almost one decade, and I've found the same spots on many snare drums I've tuned. So this video is basically a good summary on how to get there. When you say before the tunebot, it felt like there was no final destination to drum tuning, I absolutely felt 100% interpreted on that feeling, because I got through that with this little machine. Finally 294 is my all around standard, 277 for nasty rockish with little muffing, and 233 with tons of tape with that low indie/pop sound. I would like to see a video of Part II on toms and bass drum, where I also found another gems, another nice spots.

Sounds like we’re two peas in a pod mate! I love all those same tuning references! Seems like toms and kick needs to be a thing!

@@EliGreenDrums Yeah, mainly because tunebot reference manual didn't make any sense, at least for me. So, it was like starting from scratch.

My go-to pitch for my snare that I absolutely love is a B(390hz & 400hz) it gives me the nice attack and tone I want out of a snare🤘🏼
