  • Ubisoft certainly has their hands full these days. From managing production of The Crew 2, Keeping up with maintenance of For Honor, The Division, Ghost Recon Wildlands, and on top of that overseeing the production of the behemoth that is the Assassin's Creed franchise, its hard to imagine where exactly Splinter Cell fits into the schedule these days.

      @ Drew Layton The "trillion paths" got reduced by the time you got to Seoul. Everything was a one-way hallway without multiple approaches to reach objectives at all. The thing that made matters worse is you were forced to go THROUGH the scripted firefights with no method of avoiding them. I call that major league bullshit.

      I really wish for a sequel. HOWEVER, I honestly think they should retire his character, at least to a Lambert role, by this time, he's too old and would definitely want to sit on the sidelines. Bringing in a new character would be great. Also, they should had done this with Blacklist if they weren't even gonna bring in Michael Ironside for Sam. They should had made Briggs the main character or something similar

    It forgot its roots. I miss grabbing an NPC, taking them into a dark corner and hearing a dark-humoured interrogation. I miss split jumps. I miss Lambert. I miss "dont kill anyone or i'll abort the mission" levels. I miss Michael Ironside!
    Conviction & Blacklist were cool, but they were such a departure from the series' roots.

    Splinter Cell became way too fast paced like some sort of arcady secret agent ninja game. It's supposed to be slow, cold and calculated, where you get an adrenaline rush at every "oh crap I think he might of saw me" moment because of how much thought and work you're supposed to put into sneaking your way through your missions.
    Not just running through the thing like your some sort of Rambo with suppressed weapons.

      I think Chaos Theory was the best game in the entire series -- they just kept improving from the first to the third game. Now, I''ve played all the primary console/PC SC games in close to chronological order. I did also play both the original Xbox/PS2 version of Double Agent and the PC/360 version. Both versions were technically complete but, personally, I think both versions were also extremely buggy.
      The last-gen version was not given enough production time to smooth out some serious imperfections. Basically, you could snipe enemies from the other end of a long hallway simply because there was very little aim accuracy balancing (to make where a bullet actually hits more unpredictable.) The enemy AI was also super-sensitive in some spots. And, of course, holding an enemy in the familiar submission hold with Sam's hand not actually holding a knife. Developer oversights, I know.
      Then, the next-gen version was visually buggy as hell on PC. Missing textures, hard pop-ins, some audio issues. The usual junk.
      Conviction, despite breaking the majority of the SC series' gameplay rules... was alright, though. At least, I never caught any significant glitches.

    The one thing I think any Splinter Cell game could benefit from is an actual supported modding community. Create your own maps and play settings and share them. But this Ubisoft we're talking about. The only reason they even included map editors with the Far Cry games was because it was something the fan base expected after Crytek's original Far Cry on the CryEngine and its advanced modding tools. And then, they sold us short anyway with hard limitations to all of their FC map editors such as multiplayer-only or some other crap. Yeesh, it took Ubisoft four of their own releases in the series to finally give us a decent editor in FC5 -- five games, technically, if you count Primal, which had no editor...)
    If only Ubi thought more like Valve who has always included SDKs and Authoring Tools with the PC releases of their games. If Ubi realized it would actually encourage the longevity of their games. But, then again, there's a lot of other things to be fixed in Ubi games before we even should worry about map editors...

  • @PANCAKEMINEZZ

    Conviction and Blacklist are what happened. Two games, fine in their own right, but awful Splinter Cell games. Ubisoft that's made Tom Clancy turn over in his graves so many times now it's actually disgusting. Last actual Splinter Cell game was Double Agent (original Xbox version).
    If the rumors of a new SC game come true, then Ubisoft is gonna need to do some work to get me back to the series. First, they need to drop the formula they had in Conviction and BL, you know, the one they were testing to use in Watch Dogs. That needs to go. Splinter Cell is not a cover shooter and you should not be able to takedown guards so easily and in such a careless manner.
    Second, punish loud rush players. In original Splinter Cell games, if you were detected, you could almost certainly say good bye to that life because if you were shot, you didn't have a lot of HP let alone regenerating health. If you managed to escape or win a gunfight, then there were med kits on the map, but they were limited in use (meaning you could only make so many mistakes and be forgiven for them).
    Third, bring back the holstering and aiming system the older games had. The older games had a realistic approach when it came to aiming. Any movement whatsoever, even using the right analog stick, caused your crosshairs to expand, making the target you're shooting much harder to hit. In Con and BL, you can easily run and gun without any real accuracy penalty. It might make your guns a little more inaccurate, but with unlimited pistol ammo and MARK AND FUCKING EXECUTE (casual mode) who cares about missing? The realistic aiming was grounded the game in a more believable world: Sam was just a man. Sure, he was highly trained, but bullets and the flaws of being human still apply to him. His high training is the excuse for why he's able to kill, sneak, or knock out several people in a facility over the course of an hour or so.
    And finally, get rid of the cheesy cinematic shots. Splinter Cell is supposed to be a game, not a movie. Mark and execute not only dumbed down the game for casual audiences, but it also served to make the game more flashy and movie like. I'm sorry, but I thought I was supposed to be playing the game, not the game playing itself. And before anyone me says "it's optional, just don't use it", why shouldn't I? It's part of the game, it encourages its use, and its objectively better to use it. I shouldn't have to make a challenge run out of the game to make it challenging, that's why I play video games. That's why Dark Souls got so big, and why the earlier SC games were so great. The games were challenging and didn't hold your hand. Both of those games looked players in the face and told you "Fuck you! Want victory? Come get it, bitch!"
    This led the player to to say right back "Fine! I will overcome you!" But the newer SC games just timidly say "well if you want victory here it is... but if you want a challenge then you have to go out of your way to do it". That's why the early SC games didn't even have an easy mode, only Normal and Hard. That was it.
    There's much more I could add to this, but I'm sure most people have reached the end of their attention span by now (most likely the people who liked Black List and Conviction probably) and lost interest. So I'll stop it here. But there are many more issues plaguing how Splinter Cell was handled and backtracked when Conviction was released, and only got worse in Black List.

      You're are damn right - 100%! By the way: I also like it very much to read that you agree with me: Double Agent (XBOX) was much better than the Xbox360-version.

    • @PANCAKEMINEZZ
      @PANCAKEMINEZZ 6 років тому +3

      I recently bought the 360 version and... oh man. It's not bad, but it's Original Xbox brother is far better, and plays more akin to Chaos Theory. Which until recently, I always wondered why there was some hate to Double Agent, when the version I had always played was basically Chaos Theory with some bells and whistles added to the mix.

    • @nickg.4050
      @nickg.4050 6 років тому +1

      Well, I do think Chaos Theory was the cream of the crop! Personally, I've never liked either version of Double Agent. The original Xbox version felt stiff and incomplete due to all the developer oversights (they supposedly didn't have enough time before launch). Remember climbing the rope in the prison chapel and this super-sensitive guard on the roof kept getting triggered as though you were stomping around below him. He even shot at me in the dark. So, over-sensitive AI compared to Chaos Theory. Or, the fact that the pistol's accuracy parameters were basically set at 100% by default. You could snipe an enemy from thirty feet away with no trouble because it was almost always dead-on. Or, the rather amusing enemy submission hold reused from Chaos Theory where Sam would use the same pose but hold no knife to the NPC's throat. It wasn't all game-breaking. Just takes a bit away from the immersion.
      The PC/360 version of Double Agent was largely all daytime levels which always felt like it defeated the purpose of a Splinter Cell mission setting (darkness!) -- although, the "Mombasa: Part Two" mission where Emile Dufraisne sends you to kill some other double agent was pretty fantastic, in my opinion. But there were some textures missing around the starts of the game and a few other bugs. Personally, neither game did anything for me.
      Yeah, I'm Chaos Theory for life, baby!

      GmodGamer G Woah that's a bit out of the park there. The only game dumbed down out of that list is rainbow six and that one is SEVERE. Ghost recon seems harder now then ever especially with the teir mode. Splinter cell blacklist is actually just fine Sam's just doing his job and fourth echelon sometimes doesn't require Sam to not be detected. Big whoop.

    • @Cubinator73
      @Cubinator73 6 років тому

      +Pointtakenbeah The "sometimes Sam must not be detected" is the problem: It's a game design flaw, because failing a single enemy encounter resets the mission, hence a mission is beaten by repetition, not by skill. A way better design would be to incentivise avoiding detection with a reward and to disincentivize restarting a level by lowering the reward on every restart.
      The current design is Ubisoft's way of saying: "I want money, so I make the game easy for everyone"

    • @bettamidnightofdoom
      @bettamidnightofdoom 6 років тому

      Cubinator73 What is the reward you're talking about. Not quite sure what you mean by that. Also, which splinter cell are you saying is easy for everyone? You could say that conviction was made "easy for everyone" because of the mark and execute easily obtained though melee kills or not needing to aim your jumps to knock out an enemy from above. Or blacklist which I don't see how it is any easier or harder than chaos theory or older splinter cells in general. Perfectionist mode removes the mark and execute ability and enemies spawn in the same areas just like the older splinter cells.

That's all he said and since the reporter is not a gamer she didn't think to ask anything more about it. I hope he comes back as I really enjoyed Splinter Cell Blacklist but thought it was a huge mistake to recast Sam Fisher. Michael Ironside made that character what it is. During the first game he even gave them suggestions and ideas to the character and nuances that he felt were missing. They claim that for black lives they change the voice because they wanted someone who could do full motion capture while doing the voice yet so many other games have done motion capture with the voice added in later and it works just fine. In my opinion they should have just had Sam running fourth echelon and you play as I knew badass agent that is equal to Sam's promise. Sorry so long-winded we'll see how it works out

    Sam Fisher would be 61 now. He’s as old as most US Generals. MGS4’s Old Snake was funny, but I prefer this game stick to its realistic Tom Clancy roots and have him supervise.

    I hope they drop for honor and watchdogs and get back to good franchises like SC. yeah, they departed from the standard, conviction was somewhat too loud, but had cool elements; and blacklist was too linear and fast. Splinter Cell was all about taking things slow, planning and executing, with a 1000 ways to get around an area. I wish the team that did Chaos Theory, returns for a new installment.
    Better than Metal Gear, in my opinion.

    Ubisoft has taken a turn in the recent years, just look at The Division, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Rainbow Six Siege, Watch dogs, Assassin Creed, Far Cry...They really like pumping out open world games and multiplayer games which makes sens since they usually sell more than linear single player games. They even turned Rainbow Six Siege into a multiplayer game when it has always been a single player experience first. If they're going to come out with a new Splinter Cell, I'm afraid that they are going to "Rainbow Siege" it and turn it into a multiplayer game like the spy vs mercenaries game mode.

    I'll accept sam for one last outing. After that he should take up the Lambert role so Michael can keep playing the role and we play as Briggs in the field. He's a pretty likable character and I'd accept him as a new protagonist.

    I'm biggest splinter cell fan there is. I wonder what's happening with game but I think they want to stay at roots and this is hard to accomplish in today world. Splinter cell was always unique not like call of duty or similar game's, this is why they taking so long to develop something new and original while staying on the Roots.

    Splinter Cell started to go the same route as Resident Evil, which is to say it stopped being comfortable in its own skin. It started taking more of an action approach. I still enjoyed the whole series for what it was but in terms of the story, I think Sam Fisher is getting old...literally and Sarah or an unmentioned son needs to take the mantle

    Just use the formula that always worked and make sure the plot isn't too ridiculously unbelievable or cliche. Thats what I liked about the first 3. They did it just right. Sam needs to retire too. he was old when the first splinter cell came out *nearly 20 years ago* That doesn't mean he can't still be a cameo in future games. If there was one idea I could pitch to the developers of future games it would be that Fisher is now working a "mission control" role filling your ear with humor and wisdom in the midst of Echelon chatter. Chaos Theory got that perfect. Astronauts understand other Astronauts and are usually the ones in direct communication when a spacewalk is happening,the same would apply for Splinter Cells. There should always be an experienced Splinter Cell at the direct com with you to give technical advice. The inside joke could be that the Splinter Cell doesnt know Sam was a Splinter Cell, maybe only familiar with his background with the Seals. New players to the franchise who arent familar with Splinter Cell history would be fooled at first too, a creative way of welcoming a new generation. Afterall, not every-one person knows everything.

  • @FlorisDVijfde
    @FlorisDVijfde 4 роки тому

    I think the mistake Ubisoft made at some point was that they thought they had to keep changing up things, innovating...but perfection is perfection. Stick to Chaos Theory gameplay and just create new missions for Sam. That's what we want! And story was never it's strong suit, so why not stick to one main game with countless (reasonably prices) DLC missions?
    All I can do now, after replaying all the SC games, is play MGS V...I guess you could do much worse ;-).

    I swear to god. If Ubisoft announce Splinter Cell as a "massive open world experience" or "play it with your friends in an all new innovative multiplayer co-op system" this will be the last generation of gaming I do. Video games is a fading interest to me nowadays. Not because I'm getting older. But because everything is getting watered down through multiplayer or open worlds in the gaming industry. Obvioisly because it's more lucrative. Save single player games!

    This is one of these moments when the narrator or whoever wrote the text for the narrator has no idea what they're talking about. The last few entries to the series have been the exact opposite of "staying true to the series". Conviction was overall bad, diminishing the stealth aspect to a very severely dumbed down mechanic and promoting run and gun kind of gameplay. Blacklist surely has returned to the stealth aspect, but it still is nothing like the original games. You CANNOT approach the levels however you see fit. Levels in Blacklist are linear, forcing you to follow corridors and hand-holding that the game developer has put in place for you. The Splinter Cell 1 - Chaos Theory games promoted complete freedom of approach, removing any sort of waypoints or linearity, leaving the player with complete freedom of approach. They were slower pace, promoting careful planning over rushing, while Blacklist is a faced paced game which sadly still contains some of the Convictions run and gun mentality. Blacklist was an OKAY game, especially after Conviction, but nowhere close to the level of Chaos Theory and the likes. They ruined it. It's better they do not touch the franchise again.

And I will be honest, It is my opinion, I would like to see Double Agent like a game. But we can count The DA way, out. But yea I want the game to be like SC Chaos Theory styled game but better detailed, better designed, longer missions like 45min to 1H and I want the movement from Chaos Theory cause It would feel like old times. Oh and yea Ubisoft can do It, of course with right Ideas and Yves knows that.
    PS: NO OPEN WORLD AND NO FORCED MOMENTS!!!! But sandboxed missions like chaos theory and DA (Xbox Orginal version).
