- Declan joins the channel to introduce you to the RAV4 EV, a mid to late 90s EV experiment Toyota sold that has been acquired by Kyle Connor and is currently broken. Can Declan get it to work? Let's inspect and find out.

Great to see ya here Declan! Glad you are working with Out of Spec!
DECLAN CROSSOVER! I would love updates on this car, original compliance cars are always interesting.
We will be posting weekly updates! ;)
Those paddles are what the gm ev 1 had. And 6.6 is pretty good my 2012 leaf only does 3.3 kw ac charging. Nikki from UA-cam channel transport evolved had one of these. My leaf only goes 30 miles so 90 would be great.
Love the old RAV4 EVs! Looking forward to seeing how this all works out.
Honestly, for the year 2000 those specs are pretty good.
Love the hood ornament!
Welcome Declan! Looking forward to seeing this project unfold.
Thank you! It's gonna be fun!
I would buy that car today with a modern battery! 😍😍😍
So happy to see this, have always loved the RAV4 EV
Amazing content and great to see what out of spec franchise has grown into 😎👍⚡️
Nice review! Looking forward to new episodes. The reason they put spare under the car is aerodynamic efficiency (range gain was something around 3-5%)
this will be a good project to watch
Hi there! I love the idea of reviving the early Toyota EV compliance cars! The Rav 4 is great obviously, but do you think there's any possibility whatsoever that we could see an IQ EV on here? The IQ was a phenomenal car that was only limited by the battery range at the time, but I bet with tesla packs in there you could go a lot farther.
This guy is hilarious. More please!
Thank you! I'm here until they kick me out (or until the end of summer, which ever comes first)
@@ElectrekGarage Awesome!
I solved the problem! That fan in the electronics box needs RGB! RGB equals power! 😄🌈
You are so right
If only all these OEM that delivered to get California's money would have continue the effort.... Great challenge, eager to see what's next. Thanks.
If only California didn't cave in to the big car companies with their zero emission mandate...realize that people buying prius hybrids spent millions of extra dollars over gas cars, and toyota adding zero ev infrastructure for california. So essentially billions of wasted money at this point instead of creating a tesla charge infrastructure in 2000 and not 20 years later.
really surprised I don't remember these.
Maybe you could get Kyle to give you your own dedicated, Out of Spec channel? If you do the rebuild, you'll have at least one dedicated viewer. Good luck.
I will still be uploading to my main channel for more in-depth project videos!
More interesting builds coming on the channel - watch this space!
Make a 2024 version of it :)
Interesting. I would love to see how they connected the electric motor to the wheels. Ie what type of gearbox etc.
Glad to see an update on the RAV4! One thing to look into on it (which you should be able to figure out once you have diagnostic equipment) is pack isolation.
Since the batteries on the 1st gen RAV4s are air cooled, they tend to get a lot of dust buildup in them, which can lead to isolation breakdown issues. A "simple" enough fix, but would require essentually taking the whole pack apart to clean everything.
That said, that's just one possibility, and there are of course plenty of other things that could be causing issues. Best of luck getting it back on the road!
Thanks for the hint! I will definitely look into that!
DECLAN!!!!! HI BESTIE
I was about to buy one of these to repair but i cant justify it
Love this
Thank you!!!!!
Why do I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere before? 🤔
Look under your bed
Oh hey this was one of the two listed on Craigslist in Austin right? What happened to the other one?
Fun fact. In the 2000s the Ovinski NiMH battery patents owned by GM was pawned off to Texaco and then Exxon, which became Cobysys who killed off battery production through lawsuits including a $250,000,000 slap in the face of Toyota. Limiting maximum battery size to 17Ah. Most hybrids are 6.5Ah. the Toyota RAV4's and other EVs of the 90s/00s like the GM EV1 had batteries up to 120Ah
So go figure why Toyota is so shy and dismissive of EVs.
Things have changed dramatically in the last 15 years, Toyota needs to grow some balls
This things were in a bubble selling for $50k back when the Tesla Roadster was coming out, half the price of a roadster and more functional.
I would NOT put a tesla pack in it. you should put in a safer lithium iron pack, or get with the latest sodium ion batteries, given it already had nimh, so an improvement over that
for about the same range. Who need a 300 mile range anyway? Not those buying these for $50k!
Wow, only 021,902 miles on the odometer.
Can you please get something wooden to point with ?
Would you settle for a highly conductive metal rod?
