- Anthony teaches rhythm using the rhythm yardstick. The rhythm yardstick is a tool that anthony came up with to help students with their rhythm. This footage comes from "Victor Wooten, Groove Workshop" all rights reserved.
"...we can subdivide time indefinitely..."
Zeno has entered the chat
did you mean Planck time?
@@avelord6135 no - planck is constant and cant be subdivided, zeno's paradox is about dividing by 2 forever... a freshman math concept taught in calculus
Brilliant. He gives one of the clearest explanations of rhythmic subdivisions I've ever heard. I'm going to be using this one for both my piano and bass students...well done and thanks!
Been waiting 40 years of playing guitar to get a lesson like this.
Thank you sir.
UR RUSHIN IT MIKE
MIKE
Hahahahahhahahahhahaha
RUSHING OR DRAGGING MIKE?
HAHAHAHAHAHA
DAMN IT MIKE
The rhythm yardstick is great. Anthony showed it to me in a lesson and it really helped me identify, and break out of, my rhythm "rut".
Awesome how theyre teaching applies to all music and not just bass.
yeah drummer here playing along to this
Their
Nobody can be a good bass player before they become a good musician
Anthony is a great teacher. He’s given so much thought to how to illustrate these concepts. Good stuff AW!
This is a really great lesson, Anthony and Victor - You are awesome.
This is (and always will be) one of the cornerstones in understanding rythm and teaching it, in my opinion. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge Anthony!!!
this applies to every instrument, even singing!
Karl-Anthony Towns go wooooolves!!!
The simplest explanations are so often the best. Someone once said to me that if you can't explain something in simple terms, you don't really know it. This is a great example of that idea; dead easy to understand, but opens up so many doors.
As a guitarist. This is extremely useful to know. It helped me practice 16th easier.
Love how the Camera was set up above Victor's bald spot, i've never noticed that before until today.
why do you love that?
@@Hello_there_obi cus the cameraman or producer was completely oblivious to that spot and they still edited in footage
@@Iconoplastt This is a video about musicianship.
@@perprerp I found out more about Victor's head than music tbh in this one
@@Iconoplastt I watched the whole thing and daggit, you're right.
I love how understanding he is of everyone’s level of knowledge, always asking if they’re following and not rushing ahead.
Evidently some folks in this room weren't being honest about their level of experience.
I love being able to hear the students not getting it right at times, shows we are all just learners at one level or another at one time or other.
Thank you Anthony, I've always known to do these things but never could explain it. I also can't read music, but i have 8 years under my belt of all felt out tunes :D
I don't play bass, but I watched the whole workshop. These guys are incredible!
Great job Anthony, nicely broken down, clear and concise
It is a lot of fun to practice this AND it is a great step further. Thank you!
Excellent way of communicating time and subdivision. I'm using this from now on. Thanks for sharing!
All those basses playing at once make it sound like one bass with heavy chorus. That's cool
I bought this dvd online. I lost access to my account and I am buying it again. EVERY SECOND IS WORTH EVERY CENT YOU PAY FOR!
What is the name of the DVD

@@rottenpotato4399 Blessings for the info, my brethren
Thank you for this. Im appreciative of the way some people are able to break things down to where it's impossible to not understand. I know exactly what I need to practice as I don't have a good feel for 16th notes at all.
I learned this years ago by programming midi drums in a DAW. I used REAPER. Everything is quantized and snapped to a grid which is determined by the time signature. Playing with snare hit placements, syncopation, and polyrythms. Didn't know at the time that I was teaching myself deep rhythmic concepts and developing a method for visualizing rhythm. Now it's hard to NOT see what I hear. it's like two separate tools became one. Cool lesson for people who haven't been exposed to this way if thinking though. Great video
I think Midi is a fantastic way to get this idea across. It's visually simple, and really allows you to play with time. I THINK Anthony and Vic are leading up to showing that, for instance, Latin music does not have a perfectly even grid (neither does swing). We can adjust our grids to create more interesting grooves, and better reflect the "Ethnic Grooves" we are less familiar with.
Ever thought of repeating rhythms on a "circle grid"? It is less useful, musically, I think, but the geometry helps illustrate the relationship between notes in a neat way.
Same with me. I was really bad at mastering and mixing in general, so I started creating patterns where the instruments avoided each other's places, then a HUGE amount of amazing rhythms emerged for me. It was an awesome feeling.
"cough" Rock Band!
Super lesson Man. Thanks keep them coming!
I've played bass in 6 years and after I watched Groove Workshop (this show), I said to myself: Uh, I've learned more in one hour then I've done in 6 years..
I know, same!!! After 10 years of playing I still had trouble locking into a groove with other players, but after watching Groove Workshop one time something clicked for me and ever since I've had a much easier time falling into the pocket with drummers.
This exercise is simple and nice leading to so many Grooves...Thanks to the professionals...!!
Yes!!! I was so happy to find rhythm as a ruler. It's awesome
i like this approach for breaking down the beat's subdivisions. very easy to understand and practice to!
Well, this was super helpful. Thanks so much Anthony and Victor!
great lesson man. you taught this really well. great teacher!!
What an awesome lesson! Thanks man!
Great idea using the ruler method! I’m gonna have to use that teaching my students!
such an amazing teacher duo, they really should make more video lessons
Most excellent! Robbing you of teaching technique is of the highest honor, guy's.
a philosopical understanding of what it is to be funky!!!
"Not quite my tempo Mike"
LLLLLOOOOOLLLL!!!!!!
ARE YOU DRAGGING OR ARE YOU RUSHING?!?!
Thanks for the video, very interesting.
that was amazing! im making a poster of that yardstick right now.
"...You just want to have an intellectual way to understand it..."
Great method to visually conceptualize the physical placement of a note. This same method is really effective to conceptualize note duration as well, especially so when trying to understand syncopation and syncopated note value, and their placement for drummers (since our drum "notes" are essentially all attack and no sustain in comparison to other instruments like a horn, or in this case a bass, that can hold a note).
put some big reverb on your drums and you can hold a note :)
Wow. I learned alot. I am going to watch this video very often.
I'm a clarinet player and I suck at pulsing! Thanks for the video!
Very Nice !! Wow that's a great idea! 👍 Great invention!!
Thanks for posting this, the full masterclass was up a year or so ago, there's a fabulous section where Victor makes a point about groove over note choice, priceless.
Joff England I remember watching the full video, was amazing, do you still have it ?
Hi Ian, sadly not, I hope maybe somebody has it and get upload again I'd love to see it again, it seems unavailable or crazy price on retail sites.
This is so good!
hahahahahahahahaha somebody at the end is fucking up so bad
i think its Mike
You know it’s not Kurt
Lol
Correct, time is time and it applies to all instruments
sweet work Ant!
You are amazing instructor .. keep it up
Great lesson!
Cheers my fellow bassists ❤❤❤
What an awesome and fun exercise.
This is totally wonderful. Just don't forget to count at the same time.
INCREDIBLE ,, ITS SIMPLY AMAZING
Incredible lesson.
This was awesome.its so clear now
yo this guys voice is smooth as butter
I can usually just feel it but what a great lesson for visualizing never thought of it as a ruler
What a great teacher
This is a great lesson I'm going to practice this tomorrow the Bass Rules!!!!
wow.. i've been playing the guitar for 5 years and up to now... Im still struggling on how to understand the beats,, rhythms.. but these 9 min long video helped me understand it. Thank you Anthony.... :)
SO good. Thank You!
Beautiful Bass you got
Excellent method, I'm using it for my student.
Maaan these kids are lucky to be there for this
Awesome! We need some more of this! It's like light coming out of a cracked door. I need to know what's behind!
This dude is a beast.
DON'T RUSH IT MIKE GODAMMIT!
Do it man, I did that myself and I'm enjoying soo much learning bass, if you have the money, go for it man, it's awesome.
That was an informative session.
I've got that DVD! It's priceless!
Amazing...really connected with me
sweet lesson, thx for posting
Best part is the simplicity of the exercise. 2nd best part is Victor behind it all simply grooving to the beat as it plays 🤣🙏
This is awesome.
im going to use this with my students from now on
I've always thought of rhythm in this concrete way, but this video is really helpful nonetheless and I'm sure this will be a great way to practice
Jesus, Mike...
He was definitely rushing it.
Great lesson. I am a guitarist and I found it useful for rhithm work.
A way to blow your western centric music mind is to realize that the down beat doesn’t have to be counted as one. Like how language doesn’t necessarily has to be read from left to right.
In a 4 beat groove we feel the downbeat as the beginning of the groove, (1) 2 3 4. But that is just one way of looking at it. There is no natural law that says it has to be the beginning, the downbeat can also notate the ‘end’ of a groove, 1 2 3 (4). Might seem trivial or just semantics but to me it has a completely different feel. Like how in reggae the downbeat is on 3, the middle of the loop, instead of the beginning.
I had fun doing this❤️
This is gorgeous
So clean ❤️✊
Brilliant. Nobody teaches time and rhythm well on UA-cam, and I love hearing people who aren't already experts in technique....makes it easier to understand and hear inaccuracies from correctness
Bought language of music after watching this, hope that’s the right course
Rastafari live
This Video is GOOOOOOOLD
Great lesson for any musician
Very good !!!
Hello Anthony, Hope you have plans on coming to Atlanta, GA in 2020 for a future clinic workshop! THANK you and to Victor also for your "teaches rhythm..." UA-cam! I just STRUGGLE trying to play in correct time "Got To Give It Up" by Marvin Gaye. Would you consider producing another UA-cam, Clinic, or offering Private Lessons solely for teaching "how" with Visuals to play in time (between the beats), just the first couple of minutes of this song? So many other Bass Guitarists on UA-cam are busy offering how to play Grooves & Patterns & Improvisations, but none seem concerned with connecting with their audience's real needs. Your "teaches rhythm..." UA-cam in my opinion, is the most VALUABLE LESSON I've seen since College back in the mid 70s. All the Best, and Hope to see you and Victor here in Atlanta soon !
this is a cool exercise for people who cant feel and understand the accuracy of time. but its interesting to think that most people dont think of it this way. Being a drummer myself, this is just worked into my brain
Thanks, 👍 Best Lesson of rhythmic
I feel like the "a" is easier for me to feel, coming from a percussion background. a-1 2 a-3 4 gives it that heartbeat feel. I also think of the "&"s as the upbeat chuck in reggae guitar. Forget the "e"s tho. I still struggle
why cant anyone teach guitar like this. this makes me want to go out an buy a bass and start learning that instrument.
10 year's later did you buy your bass?
This applies to guitar as well
How am i just finding this now? I wish I could have been there. awesome lesson!
THAT WAS NEAT!
Very good info..
Man is all music class like this? Seems really fun
Nope turns into calculus at some point
Good job mike
Супер, спасибо)
Good job teach them well!😉
watching the videos on the internet and practicing for 6 hours a day helped me to surpass my bass instructor in less than 6 months thanks Anthony! and i have no intentions of stopping anytime soon!
A slap and pop turns this into a straight groove
