This saved my bacon. Had to replace it on an 09 SL2 Tarmac after over-torquing the inner bolt and breaking it. The new shape meant that none of the constituent parts would work-the whole thing had to be replaced. You saved Mother’s Day!! Thank you so much. I had to stack two short sockets and put something soft on top since I don’t have any soft mallets.
Scary taking a mallet to Carbon, but worked like a charm with the socket - Thank You! Took a bit to fish out the collar with a finger, but eventually it slide out and the nut followed. Cut down the tube, looking good!
I just removed an old style expansion plug from my Sid fork which has a carbon steerer. I am installing an Origin8 50mm length plug in it's place. Do you know the proper torque for the Origin8 plug, or expansion plugs in general? I have never used a torque wrench for installing the plug, but have wondered about the risk of over tightening..
Well, hmmm. I am lost. My steerer tube expander plug is stuck. Botom part is loose, so cannot screw anything into it or do the socket thing. So essentially only the expanding part is stuck and it seems to not want to move
the new plug will also get stuck. Quite likely more permanently and more difficult to get out. Just FYI. im currently trying to deal with this issue. the customer even brought in a replacement fork but it comes with the compression plug installed. so now I've got two forks with the same issue and no solution yet.
I'll save you 4:39 and tell you the solution: He took a long socket that fit inside the plug and whacked it.

My bolt has also snapped!

I knocked the expander down the steerer that allowed me to be able to remove the fork. But now I cannot retrieve the expander plug

Dude! Thanks for this! It worked!
Thanks I’ll try that
Just be sure you don't have the fork dropouts sitting on a hard surface.
