Looks great!! And moving them will be easier. You can also use a coffee filter in the bottom of your planters over the hole so the dirt doesn’t come out😊

Just wanted to mention, if you ever want to take the tree out of that container, (the first one planted) you will have to break the container to get it out. (Unless it is only in there for a short period.) When containers are more narrow at the top than in the bottom and middle, the roots will grow too wide to come out of that small of a hole.

Gardening is absolutely trial and error. I live in Michigan, and have certainly had plants do and don’t make it. I do know, tho, what I have good luck with, after many years. I will admit I have some faux ones that look pretty real, and need no care, which is great! I loved what you did with your other home, and with your passion of gardening, I know you will make this home beautiful as well. Thanks, Jenna for all your wonderful, creative ideas. Looking forward to your inside decorating as well.🤗

Love seeing your DIYs planted up. As June has reshot from the bottom, she would definitely appreciate a hard prune and will then reward you with lovely regrowth. A few doses of a seaweed type fertilizer for stress relief would help as well. (From an experienced Olive grower downunder. 😉) Happy gardening. Thank you for sharing.

I also said she should not give up because the bottom growth means life. Yes, prune all the way down or how far should she prune? Im an experienced gardener in the northeast. I m not too experienced with olive trees. I have 2 small ones in my backyard that I plan to take in during our winter.

Welcome to AZ! I have been gardening here for almost 40 years. Best tip I can share with you that I have learned is to become a fall gardener. Almost all of my gardening happens from Oct-Feb. If you start in spring things really struggle to establish themselves. Our summer is really others "winter" where we just try to help our plants survive! Fall gardening lets everything have a chance to really root in and then take off come Feb-May! Good Luck! PS LOVE how you age pots. I have learned so much from you!

The salvia you bought on sale looks like salvia farinacea, which is a cool season annual in Phoenix. I am not sure it will make it. I think you might be happier with a salvia greggii, which is a lot more heat and drought tolerant. Someone else also gave very good advice about planting in narrow neck containers. I, too, have learned that the hard way and it doesn’t take long for a tree or shrub to stretch its roots.

Oh goodness my salvia did me wrong too and I’m in southern Kentucky. 😅 I think salvia can just kind of be rude like that. Mine looked gorgeous at Lowe’s and after a few weeks at home it just decided to wilt and die regardless of watering. 🤷🏼‍♀️
I’m still mad about it. 🤣 But I also want to try again because I feel the same way about pops of purple in the garden.
I have some beautiful Russian Sage in my garden that is drought-tolerant that blooms like crazy and looks like gigantic lavender. It gets so big that we actually prop it up with a weathered wood frame at the base to keep the plant standing.

The plants and pots look beautifully and the olive tree is gorgeos! Unfortunately it won't feel at home in my garden, but some years ago I got a fig tree which turned out very well and now carries lots of fruits. I'd also include some rosemary, it will love the Arizona climate and it's also nice for cooking. Thanks to you I am keeping an eye on large planters and was able to get some at a garage sale the other day for a very low price. Love your content ❤

Because of your inspo, I bought a little live olive tree from Amazon and placed her on our sunny front porch. I named her Zytoon (Arabic for olive, and because of my Arabic heritage). I'm in Arizona as well, near the Superstition Mountains. Texas sage is definitely an excellent choice. I have several that thrive with no supplemental water. Also recommend: hopseed bush (available in 2 colors, green and purple as well). They're native and can be trained into a tree form; bougainvillea, ocotillo (very sculptural and native to AZ). Even though many plants are heat tolerant like salvias, they can suffer in pots in the full sun. Everything looks beautiful!

    Hi Jenna,
I enjoy your videos. I have the same design ideas that you do enjoy that old patina and vintage look. I’ve been a sales rep for 40 years in horticulture Plants are only drought tolerant when they’re planted in the ground and it takes around eight months
for them to get established. organic fertilizer is not really necessary unless it for fruits, and vegetables that your going to eat . I think you’d really like polygala , also known as sweet pea bush.

Trailing rosemary or lantana would look lovely trailing on the fountain surround of the pool. Pollinators love them.
Italian cypress trees in containers may provide privacy from the road.
Place struggling plants in am half day sun.
Plant companies need to change plant tags. Full sun ☀️ in Seattle is very different to full sun in Arizona. It’s like placing food in the oven; Bake or BROIL 🥵

As long as you see new growth at the bottom of June... she will make it. Just make sure to prune all the dead top off, so the energy will go into the new growth. I did like the original pot placement better... but being renters, I think on the gravel is safer. I am sure when you add the chaises and your striped umbrella it will all look fantastic. I do see two very tall large lanterns on the ends of that half circle pool wall.

These plants can’t handle direct sunlight yet in this insane heat. Best to put them under a shaded area or cover them with uv protecting material until the end of October.

I have to say I agree with that. I live in Tucson and the heat has been brutal. We pull all of our containers under the patio in June until late September. They get morning sun from the East but are shaded from the scorching afternoon sun from the West.

I agree also. New transplants can’t take direct sun until the roots have some time to establish. In addition, I never fertilize in the summer because that is there dormant growth period due to intense heat. When you combine direct sun, fertilizer, a pot (which retains heat, and then top with pea gravel, then you’re basically cooking the roots. Use shade cloth or a patio umbrella to create shade.

I’ve been trying to keep my plants alive in the summer out here in AZ and most died and some are barely surviving. I have a citrus tree that had a hard time the first year leaves burn from the sun 😢 but it’s doing better this summer. My roses didn’t survive sadly. Wish you luck!

Yes please trim all the dry branches off so that they don’t stress the roots trying to feed them… and you will see her come back as she settles in. The stress from being dug up just hurt her. My palms did the same

Hi Jenna, the yard is really coming along. The olive tree may have died due to climate change. The change was too severe of a change. I brought a Oakleaf hydrangea from North Carolina, where the temperatures are cool. I have the Oakleaf hydrangea inside my house because it’s way too hot outside. It is doing wonderful so far. The nursery you took us to was super cute.Thank you for talking us there. Have a good week.

Your tree will make it. When transplanted, they kinda have to semi die before they gain momentum to re generate.

If you would like to go to an old beautiful nursery in Phoenix, go to Berridge Nurseries off of 44th St. and Camelback, especially during the holiday season starting in October.

Hi, I just subscribed to your channel, although I've watched your videos before. I hope you're enjoying Phoenix. We live in Tucson, AZ. Some of our potted plants are struggling right now so your new video has inspired me to add some more good potting soil to them, and water them a lot. I'm not gonna lie - we've had to throw out a lot of plants over the course of 14 years living in the desert. Now I know a lot more than I first did when we moved back here. Arizona nurseries should only sell plants/trees that are native to the desert climate, and are drought tolerant, but they sell other plants as well. I have a tiny rose bush in a pot that blooms beautiful little red blooms in the Spring, but it struggles in the Summer. Even our Lantana in a pot is struggling now in these temps, even though they're a drought tolerant plant, supposedly. I like your videos. - Enjoy Arizona! - Cynthia

I'm impressed. I don't plant anything new in the summer. Takes everything I have to get outside and water 😂

Jenna, there is a UA-camr I used to watch that lives in Arizona. She got a lot of plants and plant pots from FBMP, from private sales, Craig’s List, and at estate sales from a fraction of the store prices. Nonetheless, you did a great job achieving your gardening goal on a budget!

You're doing a great job, Jenna! The diy containers look beautiful. I would encourage you to eventually fill in more and more of the gravel area with containers. Are you familiar with Claus Dalby? Although he gardens in a completely different climate, his garden is mostly containers. Make sure your more delicate plants Don get afternoon sun, always loosen the roots on anything that you take out of a pot, and check with your garden center, but try using Espoma Bio-tone Plant Starter, it might save your olive tree if you cut her back and replant. Great beginning 💚

Hello Jenna, in hot weather all flowers will love water, it's important to put water underneath, you mustn't put water from above, you'll kill all the flowers, especially if it's very hot outside, try it and your flowers will be happy and healthy, I like to look at you, have a good day , i love you 😀💐🌹
