He ATE this up, no crumbs! The resonance space he found on “Maria” at 1:17 was absolutely stunning! He was vocally flawless here and the emotion he just showed was amazing!
he did this at the lyric today and the audience applauded twice and he was wonderfully flustered. he absolutely ate this fucking song!! i literally had never been to the lyric-what a first time! tony and anita stole the show!
McCartan's performance is equal parts depth, emotion, and hope. He is fantastic at every moment of this declaration of love. It was showstopping. Superb.
I'm going to confess. I saw this at the Lyric once this week, and I went back to see it again. The physical presence in this song just adds to its range. The operatic quality is just magnificent.
Ryan Mccartan is the BEST Tony there has ever been, and I stand by that. The giddiness and jumping is so heartwarming and adds to the character SO much! I love his interpretation of Tony because he makes Tony feel more young, which suits his hopeless romantic ( and giddy ) self. And THE CHOICES!? Wow. 1:17 ... ugh. I am so grateful I was able to see this incredibly phenomenal actor perform live. Live Laugh Love Ryan 🤍.
Okay but the question is which time he says 'maria' is your favorite?? Mine is 1:05 because of the pure joy that totally encapsulates both the character's experience of first love and what i imagine it must feel like to sing this song with THAT MUCH TALENT
Saw this live (thanks Teen Arts Pass!) and everyone clapped for several minutes. It was insane seeing everyone’s reactions and Ryan’s reaction. It was. Wow. A moment that I will never forget.
This is absolutely stunning. The complete ease in his vocals - or at least, he makes it look and sound effortless, but obviously it's an incredible skill! Really beautiful performance.
omg, I love Ryan so much. This was a perfect part for him. I am happy I went to this first time seeing the show live on stage. just give me chills down my spine. Ryan change my life and I found his performance much appealing
I know the feeling. I saw Cabaret when Alan Cumming and Jennifer Jason Leigh were starring, and I got the day that Alan's understudy played. He was ok, but I will forever be a little bummed out about that.
THANK YOU! Saw this production the other day and it is absolutely AMAZING! Lyric Opera rarely lets us down but this is definitely one of their all time great productions!
He hit the high note which is saying something and there is a raw intensity to his performance which is in character for Tony. But the definitive performance for me is Louis Maskell as Tony.
My only suggestion to these guys who share their interpretations of this song ...please.sing the 'Maria'😊 in legato, not three distinct syllables. I think Bernstein would want it that way.
First Jeremy played JD in the year of 2009, then Ryan McCartan do it in 2014... Then we know that Both of them played Tony in West Side Story Then what comes Next?!, Ryan McCartan playing Jack Kelly (Newsies), or Clyde Barrow (B&C) or Dr Pomatter (Waitress), or Jamie Wellerstain (TL5Y - that means: "the last five years)?! PS: "B&C" means "Bonnie & Clyde"
voice is great, but facial expressions and body language is odd. Doesn't show that he's genuinely ecstatic about Maria, just a bunch of forceful movements pretending to be happy. Must be a modern "contemporary" interpretation.
agreed...lacks intention in his movements...everything is too choreographed with no real emotional connection to the piece to truly make it believable...mad props though for the vocals though...
I was just telling my sister this like 2 minutes ago! He has an amazing voice but he his acting is too stiff sometimes. He gets the lyrics out but I’m left wanting more from the acting
gets the job done for me, his acting is better than like nine out of ten tonys. i think it's not really a 'despite' his great voice kind of thing but because of it, it's too much to be constantly in the moment like a film actor And making sound like That every night. and his vocals are incredible. even acknowledging the challenge, he is more in the moment than most, if it doesn't feel quite real it feels like a story well told
He ATE this up, no crumbs! The resonance space he found on “Maria” at 1:17 was absolutely stunning! He was vocally flawless here and the emotion he just showed was amazing!
People around me were actually crying.
@@bernieappugliese2029can’t blame them
My god, Ryan is so amazing. The emotional depth, the arc, not to mention the incredible singing. His Maria gives me chills
Saw the show tonight; he got a full two minutes of applause. It was definitely earned. He may be my favorite Tony of all time.
i was there too, it was spectacular
No Ryan, YOU’RE the most beautiful sound we’ve ever heard
This ☝️
he did this at the lyric today and the audience applauded twice and he was wonderfully flustered. he absolutely ate this fucking song!! i literally had never been to the lyric-what a first time! tony and anita stole the show!
100% agree. Saw it Friday. Probably the fifth time I’ve seen WSS on stage in the last 20 years and by far the best Tony and Maria ever!
Ryan is FANTASTIC. Awesome voice he has! He is a perfect Tony

Longest applause I’ve ever been a part of. I’m so glad that I can listen to this over and over

He literally had me sobbing in the theater! He deserved every minute of his applause afterward🥰

Saw this live (thanks Teen Arts Pass!) and everyone clapped for several minutes. It was insane seeing everyone’s reactions and Ryan’s reaction. It was. Wow. A moment that I will never forget.

Ryan’s voice is amazing and powerful, it’s absolutely beautiful.
Absolutely breathtaking! I would love to hear him sing Empty Chairs from Les Mis! It would be so good with his falsetto ugh so good!
OMG YESS
Ryan in my favorite musical has such a comforting aura and i can't begin to explain the depths of my love for this
This is absolutely stunning. The complete ease in his vocals - or at least, he makes it look and sound effortless, but obviously it's an incredible skill! Really beautiful performance.
i saw this show at the Lyric Opera and it was honestly the best performance i’ve ever seen! absolutely AMAZING! ❤
I've listened to this at least 10+ times. His performance is so beautiful!
I only know Ryan from youtube. This is the first I've heard him sing. Sounds great!
omg, I love Ryan so much. This was a perfect part for him. I am happy I went to this first time seeing the show live on stage. just give me chills down my spine. Ryan change my life and I found his performance much appealing
I have no words. This role was for him ❤
😍 his understudy was great in the show today (6-24-23), but i was interested in hearing Ryan.... damn ❤
I know the feeling. I saw Cabaret when Alan Cumming and Jennifer Jason Leigh were starring, and I got the day that Alan's understudy played. He was ok, but I will forever be a little bummed out about that.
My favorite song from him here ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ryan is going to make an amazing Valjean one day
I want him to play Raoul in Phantom. I think he'd be excellent. If Patrick Wilson could do it in the movie--Ryan would just eat it up.
STANDING 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏........... 💯❗️

STUNNING
He hit the high note which is saying something and there is a raw intensity to his performance which is in character for Tony. But the definitive performance for me is Louis Maskell as Tony.

Ok just thought I say if he’s not cast as Gabe in next to normal movie watch out lol 😂 he’s superb
1:46.........
This feels like the Good Christian Boy opposite of Isaac Powell's version.
Veronica gonna have a bone to pick with this...

Jesus Christ Ryan
Great voice ,but totally overacted.
He has a wonderful voice, but overacts.
agreed...lacks intention in his movements...everything is too choreographed with no real emotional connection to the piece to truly make it believable...mad props though for the vocals though...
It's you again. You go on every thread about Ryan and post the same shite.
