There's gotta be a case study on why SO MANY isekai have to deal with OP protags and Demon Lords, you have a medium that let's you tell practically any story you want and yet they choose practically the same setup every single time
1. Case studies study a handful of specific cases of a wider trend, not the causes behind trends. 2. Anime is a medium, isekai is a genre. 3. The same reason that half a dozen companies tried to make cinematic universes after the MCU got big, amplified by the fact that bottom-barrel isekai is written for a demographic that people age out of faster than they get tired of repetition. Also, I get the sense that Japanese pop culture broadly favors lots of smaller productions compared to American pop culture's monoliths. This is _very_ good for giving stories with weird premises or niche audiences a chance, but it also means there's a lot more samey trash, because there's a lot more _everything_ (and fewer of the filters that keep niche or awful movies out of Hollywood). That might just be me overgeneralizing from vibes and a few case studies, though. Don't take it as gospel.
"Am I Actually the Strongest?" could be interesting if the sister's enthusiasm for mundane otaku stuff was contrasted against the hero's interest in the fantasy world that seems mundane to the sister. But that second part is the exact opposite of the series's actual premise, so...

Zom100 is honestly my favorite new show this season. I think it's been fantastic. It doesn't follow a lot of the usual tropes, and the characters feel pretty authentic.
Ah, I had wondered why the zombies had multicolored paint on them. Thanks for clearing that up!. Normally I don't care for ... well anything zombie, but the first episode with Akira and his life-crushing job and his exuberant glee at not having to go back to work while being chased by a horde of zombies made me want to watch more. Enjoying the dark comedy of it.
Absolutely loving Zom 100. We started watching it for the "hey lets watch the nutty zombie anime" hype and stayed for the lovably simple "Survival is not enough, I WANNA LIVE" story. Absolutely worth it if you like some wtf fun with an actual heart in it.
Demon Eye for the Hero Guy (Lv 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero) is really, really good. It's really well paced with the first "Will they or won't they?" I've actually been invested in for the first time in aaages.
Level One Demon Lord and One Room Hero is very, very good, maybe a bit cheesecakey, but it's repeatedly pointed out how weird it is that the secretary always wears a swimsuit, and it's congruent with her being a gigantic weirdo. the thing about it is that the manga is REALLY GOOD. seriously, it's a very good manga with great, dynamic paneling and expressions, and the show does a solid job translating that. Also, yeah, there's some increasingly strong romantic subtext between the Demon Lord and Max. And it's kind of cool that the Demon Lord kind of doesn't give a shit about gender, and takes the cute girl form initially just because they think Max will like it. I...really ship it, lmao. Enemies to lovers is hot to begin with, but the added bit of a formerly buff strong Demon Lord taking on a cute girl form to play house with the Hero is....come on that's gotta be a turn on for a lot of people, right?
I love how we start with Zom 100, which admittedly is a trash anime BUT it is so over the top embracing how trash it can get that it becomes amazing and a work of art, is hilarious. Ep 1, while super dark, hooked me immediately with its clash of tones, and I find it balances the horror and comedy aspects of the story quite well. It truly is too much of a work of art to be in this list. Also, I want an anime about the background cast of Classroom for Heroes, just them living their lives and reacting to the bland antics of the protag and harem. And for my wish for Trash Manga I wish would get a full adaptation: Dragons Rioting. Where Hentai Syndrome is a thing and our Protag lives the harem ecchi life like it's his personal Hell.
I don't think the vibrant, joyous violence would be as striking if it wasn't contrasted by the drab, banal misery of Akira's shitty office job. You can't really depict Akira escaping his late capitalist hell without depicting the thing he's escaping from. By the same token, Akira cruising his way through the zombie apocalypse wouldn't be as hilarious if he wasn't constantly running into other people struggling through conventional undead horror. It's that contrast which makes Akira an absurd character, and not a character in an absurd world.
This was already your best and most refined Hottest Trash video yet, and then you dropped a Garth Marenghi reference that had me literally standing up and applauding. This was absolute fire, keep up the amazing work! Edit: also surprised that Sweet Reincarnation didn't make the cut considering the MC's name is Pastry, son of Casserole.
Anime uses European words for character names all the time. It's worth making fun of alongside other silly flaws, but it's nowhere _near_ enough to qualify a series on its own.
@@timothymclean That's a fair point but I do have two counter points: 1: As an example of that trope, it's especially ridiculous to say out loud. 2: Having a pâtissier get sent to another world only to bake one solitary pie in the 6 episodes it's gotten so far is trashy enough for a bland isekai to stand alongside Great Cleric and Unique Skill. Heck if it had also had a blue haired bunny girl in the cast then it'd have been a lock for sure. Anywho, it's Geoff's list and I can see why he'd skip it - when I say that I was surprised, I mean that in the least extreme way possible.
The chairman's granddaughter just wanting to go to a normal school is the most realistic motivation a character in one of these "elite gamified high school" anime ever
The Zom 100 anime is what's keeping me going man. There are missing chapters ( ones that haven't been fan translated ) and the official ones are releasing sometime this month. They really did an awesome job with the anime.
I thought about picking Rent-a-Girlfriend back up this season, but found much more enjoyable to pay someone to violently wake me from my sleep and just scream the wiki cliff-notes at me before smacking me with a dead herring. Got through it much faster. Also.....Thigh Clops?..... Well done.
It's been a great season for Mid Isekai. I appreciate that this batch has an abundance of 'MC-kun interacts with the world in an unusual way' setups rather than the usual absurd powers.
I love these videos, and this summer one was spot one. Surprised Sweet Reincarnation didn't make this list. I have been enjoying the fact that protagonist desperately wants it to be cozy cooking anime, but normal isekai adventure stuff keeps getting in the way.
Great Cleric gets quite a bit better during and especially after the next arc. The politics and world building improve dramatically as well as getting genuinely interesting side characters
Idk if you can call ZOM 100 Hottest Trash. It genuinely might be in my top 5 anime of the season! The first episode had me rolling on the floor laughing and I was so not prepared for the Ep 5 Zombie Shark either so best believe I was dying the whole time (get it?). While also getting hype that our boi Akira taser-punched a shark in the face and got the girl ('s number). So glad Geoff recommended this show I'm totally hooked.
Geoff has made it abundantly clear that he consideres "trash" and "good" independent variables. Zom 100 is far from the first anime to end up on both a season's Hottest Trash and its Ones to Watch.
Love, love, love, LOVE Tenpuru and I consider it the highest of honors that it was included in this particular review. The manga is also amazing and highly recommended.

@@nelitogorostiza16 That's because Marxists are braindead and attribute everything to capitalism. Including the concept of property. It's to the point that reality itself is capitalist.
My Unique Skill is actually one of my favorite novels. The story regularly keeps on introducing new mechanics and worldbuilding or the MC visits new location and dungeon with its own unique rule set. It however is a pure slice of life and not a harem (at least for the first 400 to 500 chapters or so, our of 600 last time I read), and there are no situations taken too seriously to the point that the MC is treated as the richest, most powerful adventurer possibly before chapter 200.
Reborn as a vending machine had a legitimately cool fight scene that actually made sense within the rules of the world, while also creating an exciting cliffhanger that progresses the plot. AND THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A BOX.
I love that like half of these were part of or honorable mentions in the ones to watch video for this season. Guess it’s just a good time to be an anime watcher
So the premise of Liar raiL is kids playing games with largely made up rules, making up their own rules as they go and also competing for stars. The fact that this means there's at least one person in the world who looked at the duelist kingdom arc from yugioh and went "that, but high school and tiktok" genuinely terrifies me lmao.
I have a J-Novel Club just for the Ascendance of a Bookwrom prebub, but because of that I had a chance to read a lot of Greatest Cleric while it was free. And the series really seemed like it had absolutely no idea what it was doing or why.
With each new season, Geoff is committing more and more to the Chez Garbagé restaurant concept. One day we'll all sit in his newly acclaimed back alley dinery, getting to witness first hand how he prepares all the finest rubbishous dishes for his audience. I'm already booking reservations!
The first thought I had was "No way you're calling Zom100 trash"... then I thought about it for a second and was like "you know what? I guess it *is* trashy". But the fact that it didn't even cross my mind this would be in the trash list for the season kinda says something.
The nice thing about the cleric one is that the MC isn't instantly overpowered. He has to really work at it. Of course, this is counteracted by the idea that every other healer is trash that puts money above saving lives and will sell you into literal slavery in another country where slavery is legal if you can't pay your bill here. No happy medium there, even though the MC has no monetary issues, completely undercutting the idea of why the main antagonist went big pharma.
None of that even matters because everyone and everything that happens is just so boring and bland. The boring things happening don't even have to happen in a boring way but they do.
Liar Liar is fun in that they are not messing around when they say "you don't play by the rules, you play With the rules". Everything else is regular school anime fare, of the nice one. Neither risky, nor outright lame. A nice palate cleanser for Saturday. Now Vending Machine, on the other hand, is the kind of fun dumb nonsense that is actually smart in all the creative ways a character that cannot move and can only say a few specific phrases tackles everyday isekai situations. That series is not about the destination, but about the journey and the sentient, multipurpose vending machine at the core of it. And Zom 100 is the kind of gratifying wild romp we needed. With plenty of explosions, colorful gore (as in the use of colors, not the gore itself), and a surprisingly chill atmosphere. Those three are, imo, the best of this crop of Le Garbage.
Ten episodes in and Lv1 Demon Lord honestly just keeps getting better (protip, don't send mook grunts off to fight a guy who helped kill the Lord of All Demons).
Lmao he did the Canadian thing at 9:15. And I think I'm getting a hint of lighter fluid coming off those bins from the cleric anime. I've got a feeling that trash is gonna burn brighter than we were expecting.

It *isn’t* the hottest summer in history, they’re trying to say it’s the hottest in *recorded* history (and even still it’s likely less than the last 100 years) but 88% of the data comes from improperly placed instruments so that’s probably nonsense anyway.
Aww man, I was really hoping you were going to say "our hero dies playing a shitty mobile game and wakes up in a shitty mobile game." Now THAT'S the kind of trash I'd watch.

Author of Rent a Girlfriend is literally mocking us, because one of the many of Kazuya's inner thoughts we as an audience were unfortunate to hear was something like *"Chizuru will for sure think I do all this just go get into her pants"* which is literally the only logical impression any female in Chizuru's place would have. It's almost like author knows how bad writing in his show is.
Zom 100 is like anime trash equivalent of those youtube videos that painstakingly recreate fast food with gourmet ingredients. Its form and function in society is still arguably trash, but it's also so much more in a way that highlights what's great about category.
Ya know... i haven't kept up with Rent a Girlfriend in a bit but honestly I can respect new girl's noble efforts to make sure best girl Ruka doesn't stay in a relationship with the MC... as much as it would pain me to imagine her heartbroken after a breakup (her heart ain't the best as you know)... I know that she can do better.
Unique Skill is a nightmare world! Beware the strays! There's no farming! No wildlife! No anything away from people! Oh no, a town was wiped out by the over strong, stray monster. Next, that monster is now accompanied by a horde as every bit of uneaten food, every piece of trash, every bit of broken furniture or ruined building now turns into a monster! It's an existential monstrosity!
I will give the non- binary Gremolin alot of credit for feeling like an earnest exploration of the concept. Most gender bending is at best a punchline but the demon king says attraction is all that matters in a relationship which is kinda amazing. Also they socially act both feminine and masculine. It's good shit.
In an anime seasons so strong, even the trash this year has some pretty decent flavours (Zom 100 and The Vending machine Iseakia where actually really fun)
There was a small hollowed out store full of porn vending machines near where i used to live in Osaka, and it was... like, i feel like you could have filmed a Saw sequence there, and no one would have found it out of place. Very grungey, lots of exposed insulation, which was probably asbestos. Definitely a place you love the existence of more in concept, and less in experience.
Am I actually the strongest is actually pretty good because it just straight up memes on isekais in general. It doesn't take itself seriously at all and the stuff the little girl does is just straight up hilarious. The great cleric is also played mostly as a comedy from what I can tell. It's probably the slowest burning show you listed here as the last episode finally had protag kun leave the starting town. Also the vending machine one is straight gold. Highly recommended.

It’s so ironic when an animator is making an anime about someone escaping a death march job while working one . (Poster above said same thing )😂😂
It's comfort fiction. The author just wants to hit the beats of Dragon Quest tropes, and audience members just want to be comforted by that.
becuase your writing about a hero so putting them up aginst the ultimate evil is a no brainer it's not that deep bro.
I bet many of them are written by Light novel authors who want to copy popular stuff like Sword Art Online...
And they're always videogame power systems. Like, author... what if people just had powers without a system menu. Huh? Can that happen?
"Am I Actually the Strongest?" could be interesting if the sister's enthusiasm for mundane otaku stuff was contrasted against the hero's interest in the fantasy world that seems mundane to the sister. But that second part is the exact opposite of the series's actual premise, so...
This scoring system is so much better and more understandable than most other
Not even as a joke either, I've gotten pretty good at understanding the rating system. The contents of the trash are various components of the anime, the moistness being how horny it is, the quantity of trash being trashiness, and the heat being how glorious the whole thing is.
@@nado1908that's pretty accurate ngl.
@@nado1908wait, it actually has meaning?
Admittedly i normally don't watch enough of the animes he puts in the trash to recognize any patterns. Although the contents being a reference to the anime was always obvious.

I gave up on Liar rail when I realized that it was never gonna be about clever strategy, just waifus bailing the guy out of everything.
The strategies get better over time but yeah the beginning is a tad rough.
The only reason I’m forcing myself to crawl through liar rail is because it’s animated by geektoys and they’re handing seasons 4 and 5 of date a live and so I feel like I need to support them so they possibly get a little more money

I'm truly adoring Zom 100 so far. Show is fully aware of what it is at every point and indulges in it.
It's an absolute mystery to how the hell Kanokari is still running and even getting its later materials adapted.
Because people are financially supporting it you dummy
I actually quit the manga when he literally reset everything after the exhausting boner beach arc, I thought it was going to end, but it just went to the beginning. Have you been reading it? has anything changed?
@@povilasl5383 Thankfully not, which is why I'm still stunned as to how it's continuing. I stopped reading and was successfully able to scrub it from my mind for at least 3 years now.
I have literally never seen a single person with any positive feelings towards the anime/manga. I have no idea why its still around
@@povilasl5383 nope it has not
Zom100 is honestly my favorite new show this season.
I love how Reborn as a Vending Machine made both the best of and best trash videos lol, it’s so fun
you can absolutely hear the smile holding back the laugh at 0:50
edit: absolute fire sponsor segment
He'd absolutely be in a _lot_ of trouble with the inspector if _nothing_ was on fire.
Enemies to lovers is hot to begin with, but the added bit of a formerly buff strong Demon Lord taking on a cute girl form to play house with the Hero is....come on that's gotta be a turn on for a lot of people, right?
each episode of this series fills me with happiness
Geoff truly mastered his art
Oh my GOUDA
Praise Princess Paella!
XD
@@timothymclean That's a fair point but I do have two counter points:
1: As an example of that trope, it's especially ridiculous to say out loud.
Zom 100 is really fun, and I'm happy to see how much the anime reinforces the tone that the manga has.
great editing! creative use of greenscreen and color grading gives the sense of an environment
I thought about picking Rent-a-Girlfriend back up this season, but found much more enjoyable to pay someone to violently wake me from my sleep and just scream the wiki cliff-notes at me before smacking me with a dead herring. Got through it much faster.
Also.....Thigh Clops?.....
Well done.
I really enjoy reading rent a girlfriend. Just consider it a government funded therapy billboard and it gets so much funnier
I love how Zom 100 manages to feel so fresh even though there are so many zombie manga ou there.
Right… how is that listed as trash!?
Yeah I’m still confused by that his didn’t really give a reason why it’s trash other than it’s similar to hotd but different
@@schiebay9196 yeah…. Pretty trash take imo
@@kronosis2767 This whole series is trash takes, that's the point.
Honestly, I wouldn't even call it trashy.
Nah Zom 100 is amazing!
It is both trash and amazing
Geoff has made it abundantly clear that he consideres "trash" and "good" independent variables. Zom 100 is far from the first anime to end up on both a season's Hottest Trash and its Ones to Watch.
He did say he could call it the best anime of the season
"Another thing they wrote stupid, is the whole ass script for the entire show..."
HAHAHAHAAHAH
My favorite thing about this series is how much fun you are clearly having making it. Thank you for the lol’s!
Love, love, love, LOVE Tenpuru and I consider it the highest of honors that it was included in this particular review. The manga is also amazing and highly recommended.
(the currently out 5 episodes of) Zom 100 is one of my favorite anime of all time, I just hope they don't fumble the second half
Episode 5 jumped the shark in one funny ass way, and I love it.
Ah, a pun twofer.
And now they're delaying the next epsiode for stupud sports
"It stands out from the post snyder zombie trash and its bleak look"
''Its all about looking on the bright side of undeath"
You didnt see dawn of the dead remake did you Geoff?
4:55: I am exactly the kind of nerd who dismissed Zom100 after reading one manga chapter, but is intrigued by the promise of Das Kapital. Thanks!
Capitalist realism really hits hard: the world literally ended but capitalism endured lmao
@@nelitogorostiza16 That's because Marxists are braindead and attribute everything to capitalism. Including the concept of property. It's to the point that reality itself is capitalist.
@@nelitogorostiza16 The girl mentions the depression and not the apocalypse, so I assume that's a flashback of some kind.
Zom 100 might be one of the greatest produced anime of all time
And the story is top tier too
I love that like half of these were part of or honorable mentions in the ones to watch video for this season. Guess it’s just a good time to be an anime watcher
Im just waiting for Mami to appear most of the time in Rent-A-GF since she is the only 1 who moves the plot. the rest are just i wike u kazuya uwu.
Mami is the only character I can stand in that show, and she's still awful.
I hope she wins.
I don't think she'll appear this arc tbh.
The vending machine one has been a journey I didn’t expect. 😂
Thought I’d be meh about it, actually enjoy it and think it’s pretty funny.
I have a J-Novel Club just for the Ascendance of a Bookwrom prebub, but because of that I had a chance to read a lot of Greatest Cleric while it was free. And the series really seemed like it had absolutely no idea what it was doing or why.
I mean... it does appeal to the crowd who do like seeing protag kun suffer i guess
@@warpspeedscp it's so boring though. It's no fun to watch a boring person suffer in a boring way.
With each new season, Geoff is committing more and more to the Chez Garbagé restaurant concept.
One day we'll all sit in his newly acclaimed back alley dinery, getting to witness first hand how he prepares all the finest rubbishous dishes for his audience. I'm already booking reservations!
Wait Zom100 is trash? Oh well I guess pull me up a chair at Chez Garbage
21:00 Super Eyepatch Wolf is that you?
This is so accurate, thank you for pointing that out lol
Bruh true
Really enjoying Zom 100 so far.
I've been meaning to check out Lv1 Demon Lord some time too.
The OreImotivate book cover is absolute genius
Ten episodes in and Lv1 Demon Lord honestly just keeps getting better (protip, don't send mook grunts off to fight a guy who helped kill the Lord of All Demons).
Goddamn your writing and editing was on point! I was nearly crying laughing during the Rent a Girlfriend segment, fuckin gold!
0:05 ah what a warm well, and can I say sir you look great on this fine night
Lmao he did the Canadian thing at 9:15. And I think I'm getting a hint of lighter fluid coming off those bins from the cleric anime. I've got a feeling that trash is gonna burn brighter than we were expecting.

To be fair a lot of low budget horror films are excellent, even if they don’t get the respect they deserve.
I’ve become such a huge fan of your Chez Garbage videos, and loving the Mothers Basement figurine I received in the mail a couple months ago ❤ Funny enough today I was driving home and Zom100’s opening shuffled up to blare out my car 🚗 💨
It *isn’t* the hottest summer in history, they’re trying to say it’s the hottest in *recorded* history (and even still it’s likely less than the last 100 years) but 88% of the data comes from improperly placed instruments so that’s probably nonsense anyway.
I don't even watch much anime, but I always look forward to these hottest trash videos.
You earned an 'up vote' for the Calvin Ball reference.
Aww man, I was really hoping you were going to say "our hero dies playing a shitty mobile game and wakes up in a shitty mobile game." Now THAT'S the kind of trash I'd watch.
Very much a fan of the green screen, huge production value boost very unfitting of this series

ZOM 100 is so goddamn good it blurs the lines between ‘ Hottest Trash ‘ and the ‘ Best Anime Of The Year ‘ 😮 Hoooooly shit.
So does eminence in shadow
the fact geoffs AOTY is on a hottest trash list is rly going to get me watching these.
I hope he does, because then it means he is intentionally shitting on the fans which I approve of.
Got to be careful of those stylish inspectors 👀
Zom 100 is like anime trash equivalent of those youtube videos that painstakingly recreate fast food with gourmet ingredients. Its form and function in society is still arguably trash, but it's also so much more in a way that highlights what's great about category.
Still waiting for a Mother's Basement + Trash Taste collab
This script was superb.
4:53 You don't know how close I avoided that spoiler. I read this exact chapter yesterday.
Ya know... i haven't kept up with Rent a Girlfriend in a bit but honestly I can respect new girl's noble efforts to make sure best girl Ruka doesn't stay in a relationship with the MC... as much as it would pain me to imagine her heartbroken after a breakup (her heart ain't the best as you know)...
The Unique Skill one has that one bunny girl but it's overall a really sweet wholesome story about found family
21:41 this line must be one of the funniest things ever said on this channel :)
In an anime seasons so strong, even the trash this year has some pretty decent flavours (Zom 100 and The Vending machine Iseakia where actually really fun)
if ud told me "My Little Sister cant Possibly be an iPad Kid" was the actual title, i wouldve believed u
That skit with Yazy was hilarious!!!
