Bolt Action Basics - Pinning and morale tests

- Hello and welcome back to the channel and the fourth video in the Bolt Action Basics series. In this video, we are going to be looking at two important core mechanics - pinning and morale tests.
Pinning is an important factor to consider in games of Bolt Action as pinning units makes it difficult for your opponent to be able to move and control their units. Essentially, it represents units being under fire and not reacting to being giving orders. Effective use of pinning in Bolt Action is a sure way of affecting your opponent’s plans!
The second mechanics that we will look at in the video is taking morale tests. When the casualties start to mount up, a unit will be severely tested and may break and flee the battlefield. Just like pinning, causing your opponent’s units to have to take morale tests is another way to disrupt their plans and ultimately win the game.

Really find these vids useful. I’m a complete beginner so it’s good to see rules in action
Hey Andy, that's awesome thank you. I'm really glad that the videos are useful for you. It can be quite daunting getting into a new game so hopefully these videos have demonstrated the really basic elements of Bolt Action. I have a few more planned for the near future 😊
Very useful again! cheers.
Cheers buddy, I'm really glad you found it useful! Hopefully these basics videos will keep helping new or aspiring Bolt Action players that have just started 😊
Great video series mate, the effort you put in here is helping out new players years later, myself included!
That's awesome, cheers Matt! Really glad that you've found the videos helpful. When I first started the series, I wanted a playlist of very short videos that explained the core mechanics of Bolt Action rather than a 'how to play' series of videos. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, always 😃👍
Another great video mate, this is a really good series 👍
Cheers Lee! It's been pretty interesting putting these together and hopefully they'll be useful to new players. I think looking at the basics can really help 😊
Thanks for the guide on this. Very clear and interesting.
Thanks Cal! Hopefully the video explained it well. There are lots of other details but going into everything would have taken away from the videos being basic ☺
Another excellent video on the mechanics. Great work
Thanks Victor! Hopefully with these videos I've struck a good balance between basic and informative. They've been pretty entertaining to put together 😊
Thanks for the talk through on the rules mate
Thanks buddy, I'm glad it helped! With this series what I wanted to do was pick the very basic mechanics of the game that people may ask questions about and focus on them 😊
Great guide mate, as per the style is really useful and clear. Keep it up!
Cheers Joshua, much appreciated! I think keeping to the absolute basics is probably the way to go for videos of this nature 😊
Brilliant guide my friend!!Great presentation!
That's awesome, thank you! I'm no technical whizz but hopefully the format will help newer Bolt Action players as they start playing. It's been a lot of fun making the videos too 😊
@@OnPointHQ Yes i know what you mean!I am thinking of making something similar for Swordpoint Rules..Great idea!
That would be pretty sweet! I think sometimes sitting down with a rulebook can be quite daunting but short videos of the basics in snapshots will hopefully help people out 😊
Great videos!!!
Thank you, really glad that you've enjoyed the videos! It was a series that I'd always wanted to make and the feedback is that people have certainly found them helpful 😁
Question:
When I issue a Snap-To and activate two other units, what is the order of events for when a morale check occurs in the process of focusing the fire from the three units onto one enemy unit.
For Example:
My 1st Lt. issues Snap-To to two other units to fire upon Enemy Unit A, along with itself. Do I decide the order in which the units fire, or do Infantry Squads have to go before the HQ unit?
Also, assuming the first two units that open fire cause more than 50% casualty rate to Enemy Unit A, does the moral check occur at that moment, or after all three units have fired?
I ask because tactically, If I can use the HQ unit first, I am less likely to cause 50% casualty rate with the second unit, pushing for the morale check to occur with three pins on Enemy Unit A, compared to 2 pins if the Infantry Squads must go first.
Thank you for the consideration.
Sincerely,
Hey Thomas, as far as I am aware and certainly how we play it is that if a unit incurs 50% casualties it takes the morale test at that point. Using the HQ to soften up the target unit is certainly a viable tactic! So -
HQ uses snap to and issue fire orders on itself and two other units. It opens fire on the target, hits, causes no kills but adds a pin. The second unit then fires. Let's say it hits and causes 50% casualties. The test is taken at that point but with two pins. If it passes, it faces being fired at by the third unit and potentially another morale test with further pins. If it fails, the third unit would be free to target another unit 😊
@@OnPointHQ
Ah, I thought once the unit committed to firing upon a unit that you could not change that commitment.
Thank you for your insight.
As long as the order is;
HQ nominates and fires at unit A, unit 1 nominates and fires at
unit A. If unit A is no longer around, unit 2 can choose to fire at a new target. That's how we play it 😊
Another Question:
Watching videos I see allot of references to "Super 6s" to hit and kill.
As I understand this, when you have so many modifiers that you need a 7 or higher to hit, this means you hit on 6s, and kill only on 6s. I also understand that those can still be exceptional damage.
Please confirm or correct this understanding.
Thank you in advance for the consideration.
Sincerely,
I think with this, you are referring to the impossible shot I think we call it. Let's say a unit has moved and is shooting at long range against a small team down in hard cover. Phew! That's a -7 modifier to hit. To hit the unit, the player must roll a six followed by another six for the shot to be successful. However if he does hit, the casualty roll will be the standard 3, 4 or 5 depending on the unit rating or if any pen modifiers apply 😊
@@OnPointHQ
Thank you for that clarification as well.
What does remove d6 mean when passed order test when it is rally?
Hey Colin, thanks for the question. When a unit passes a rally test, you roll a six sided die and add one to the number you roll. This is the number of pins that the unit removes. This represents the unit taking time to pull itself together, distribute ammo and prepare to get back into the fight 🙂
heavy pinned units are the worst units 😁
Definitely agree with this Lucian! Seeing one of your best units with three pins and refusing to do what you want it to do can be very annoying 😁
Hi, I wonder if you can help. I can't find reference to the 50% strength loss morale test in BA Two. Is this rule from BA One? Thanks.
Hi Stephen, this is in second edition yes and can be found on page 58 -
'if a target unit loses half or more its men from the fire of one enemy unit then the player makes an immediate morale check' Hope that helps 😀👍
@@OnPointHQ Thank you very much. Greatly appreciated you getting back to me.
Do you have any videos covering indirect fire
Hey Niko. There is another video in the series about mortars and that covers how mortars fire indirectly ☺
@@OnPointHQ so I have the band of brothers set. Us army starter set and German grenadier starter set. How should I go about building all this? I'm brand new to ba
Hey Niko. Apologies for the delay in responding to you but I didn't receive a notification. The BoB box is a great way to start with Bolt Action. I would recommend starting with the basics out of the box and taking it from there. Once you have learned the basic core rules it will be a lot easier to build on the two armies. Let's take the German Grenadiers as an example. After you have built these and played a few games you can look to add your starter box of Grenadiers. This will increase the number of sections you have. You can then look to add support options like mortar and machine gun teams. After this you can have a look at the different theatre selectors and use your collection to build different and unique lists. But, the real basics would be to use the basic army lists in the book to guide you through building the different units then have a few very simple games. Once you have the core mechanics down you can then really start to add to your armies ☺
