The only reason Shang is not in Drag is because the animators knew he’d be too powerful if we saw him that way. They were protecting us.
I don't want to be protected. I want Drag Shang. I'm willing to face the consequences head-on.

@@coregano no thank you. This movie already fills me with so much bi panic I think I would explode if I saw drag Shang.
So, I realized something about Crickey. He’s meant to be lucky, yet he’s the whole reason Mulan messed up with the Matchmaker. But if you think about it, if Mulan had done well and been married, she would’ve been absolutely miserable. Because Crickey messed it up, she went into battle, won the war, and got real happiness. A *very* lucky bug.
The hair cutting scene is definitely something for western audiences, where it's generally seen to be feminine if you have long hair. I think you're absolutely right about accuracy vs heart though. It's obviously bad to be flagrantly wrong about the setting you're trying to appropriate for your story, but I'd rather someone put genuine care into a good story with mistakes than whatever Mulan 2020 was going for.
If it makes you feel better, interpret the hair cutting as burning the bridges behind her so she can’t go home again unless a miracle happens.
Well this movie got more right than the 2020 version anyway, so if nothing else, it’s decent. Also just a good empowerment story for the world to see, and a fun, looser film in general.
i thought cutting ur hair meant as a sign for moving on

i love that the animator was like “that was my bad, sorry” that’s so nice
I mean, they were definitely more respectful than the 2020 crew. It even looked like that there were things that they were aware of that they just couldn’t do, whether it was for dramatic effect or comedic effect.
right! i really love that. a lot of the time ppl complain about 'political correctness' with old movies/media and say stuff like it was a product of its time, etc etc - thats true, but it also doesnt take more than a simple 'yeah we were wrong about this part, sorry'. we dont have to cancel all non 'pc' media but we can also acknowledge that even dated/old movies can be inaccurate or offensive.
Truee usually i would see ppl denying others critiques, the way they responded to the tweets were very nice and i respect them for that
I even like that he pointed out that they didn't use some things to make the story work or for dramatic/comedic effect because, well, it's art, it doesn't have to be accurate to portray real feelings and the cartoon never pretended to be historically accurate. And I love how open they are to learning new stuff and to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism
@@user-vs1it5yu8u especially because there's a line between inaccurate or offensive. like, there are things that original Mulan could've easily fixed and were probably a result of ignorance around Chinese culture, it's not like they're so harmful that we need to cancel the whole thing (at least from my perspective as a white person, and I know that I don't and can't speak for Chinese people).
Me being a basic white girl from rural Missouri who never went anywhere - Mulan was my all time favorite movie as a little kid. I loved the music, the story and the culture. It was my first real introduction to a completely different one. It's nice to know that it wasn't just a slap in the face to chinese culture.

I feel that some of these inaccuracies are actually the animators and writers using shorthand to reach their audience better. For example, it’ll be far easier for the standard Western audience to understand “Now all of China knows you’re here!” Rather than “now all of the dynasty knows you’re here!”
Sometimes, shorthand does absolutely need to win over accuracy.
Same for the hair cutting scene, again for a standard Western audience shorter hair is typically associated with masculinity so her cutting her hair makes it easier for people to understand what is going on even if from a historical standpoint it doesn't make sense. Of course the point of the video is mostly just to point out the inaccuracies so you know about them, I don't think she's trying to say that all of them are inherently flawed.
Or you could say cutting the hair means burning the bridges behind her.
Yup. It’s a cartoon for kids. No need to nuke everything to be “real”. This story is based on a legend anyway.
Yeah especially bc this movie is in English and they have American accents. It's fine to use the American terms for things if the movie isn't marketing itself on accuracy
Same with the underwear. Yeah, I think we know nobody had heart underwear back then. That was clearly a joke.

A nice fact is that after "A girl worth fighting for" they don't sing again in the whole movie, it's possible that this is meant to give the movie a more serious tone and atmosphere.
I think the Chinese stereotype(and larger Asian stereotype too) of "honor" is actually from us immigrant families. My grandparents grew up in China and immigrated into the US just before my father was born. "Honor" was sorta an emphasized thing, though we never _really_ said "honor" per se. As a kid I definitely explained things to my friends just as the "honor" thing since it conveyed 90% of what it needed to much easier than explaining that I'm terrified of dissapointing the legacy of my grandfather(who passed before I was born) and his success in America.
there are no Asian stereotype. there is east Asian stereotype. don't mistake east asia for entire Asia.
@@mishterkhalid3117?
I wonder if that need to "make a name for oneself" in the US is behind it? US culture appears from the outside as very dynastic, to the point of calling people "junior".
@@mishterkhalid3117 so you`ve never heard of the Asian parents stereotype, huh
What I think he means is, for example, people from Isreal are Asian. Some people from Egypt are Asian. People from Iran are Asian. Most people from Turkey are Asian and on and on and on.
But then there's people like you who just sum up all orientals as "Asians."
While it's true they are Asians, it's dismissive of other Asian people.
Also the idea that there's an east asian steroetype is also spurious. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Laosian, cambodians and others all have different cultural norms and are not "all the same" like people seem to think.
Try to be better people, thanks.

There's something that is nice in the animated movie is that you can feel they did quite a bit of research on Chinese history and yeah it may not be super accurate but I feel like you can feel the artistic team's enthusiasm for its visual elements, and little details. It feels more like a homage than a ripoff.
I feel like most Chinese people are not super picky about historical accuracy since the historical c-dramas or even fiction (as you mentionned, historical fanfic) are kind of all over the place as well, as my dad loves to point out. I think it would be sort of hypocritical to say only Chinese people are allowed to have fun with that, which is why Mulan 1998 feels quite okay. The reason why the 2020 version doesn't feel that way is also because the chinses elements in the story feel more like a constraints to the creator who end up kind of throwing a bunch of "Chinese" stuff randomly into a story rather than having fun exploring these elements.
It feels kinda like how Japanese anime sometimes uses Catholic symbolism just because they think it looks cool, even though they don't know much about it.
One thing I was laughing so hard while Mushu was getting the fireworks. In english as well as in german he says "Your worst nightmare." I Swedish he says "Jag är Batman" which is translated into "I'm Batman" and I just couldn't stop laughing because it took me by surprise and the knowledge that batman was called "Läderlappen" in Sweden instead of Batman.

It took me until right now to realize that having the guy soldiers dress up in drag at the end was a bit more than a "man in a dress" joke. Like, this is a movie about a person pretending to be a sex/gender they're not in order to play a hero role how did I not see that they are paralleling Mulan's story by having her friends break in as concubines and help save the day from a traditionally feminine role *face palm*
I also love how Mulan has to train and learn to use her strengths and talents as opposed to just being wicked strong from the start. It plagues both male and female hero stories when the main character has no development and is just instantly good and the best at everything. Mulan became an even stronger "strong female character" to me as a little girl because she didn't naturally have a conan the barbarian level of physical strength in order for her to be a great warrior (in fact, she was appropriately the weakest one at the beginning and the only one Shang Li sent home for being such a wimp). She developed her skills with training and determination but what sets her apart is her wits. She did use "strength" and "discipline" to climb the pole like Shang Li said she would need to, but in the end it was her problem solving ability that got her to the top. She likely never would have been able to climb it with brute strength alone, but she didn't need to because physical power (traditionally masculine trait) isn't the only way you can excel.
Before I thought the message of this movie was "girls can be just as good as guys if they try hard enough" but now im realizing a more appropriate theme is "Strength in femininity". Realizing this now, I see the true climax of the film being the moment when Mulan stops the sword with her fan. To me, this was "strength in femininity" symbolized.
Actually, it goes even deeper than that. The usual trivia fact that there are no songs in the movie after Girl Worth Fighting For? Only mostly true. There's actually a brief reprise of Be a Man during the scene where they infiltrate the palace, which can be read as implying that it *is* being a man to be willing to do something like that
"Strength in femininity" seriously?
Mulan just showed that with enough wits and bravery, she could outmatch brute strength.
@@tarnw3301That doesnt cancel what they said tho?
@geministrial950 i m not sure if problem solving ability ("what lets her come out on top") must be seen as a female exclusiv trait. So strength in femininity may be a little too much, but it sure does send the message that girls can use wit and determination to achieve even better results. Brute strength is not the most important factor. Sure, the movie mainly wants to adress women with this message, but it basically appllies to anyone who may not have a physical advantage.
@@nickthequick2326 "Strength in femininity" means Mulan uses her abilities and talents to excel without forcing herself to be like a man or do things in the way they did. Nobody said problem-solving is a female-exclusive trait but the fact she did use innate abilities to accomplish her goals rather than trying to be like the boys, showed that she could be strong (not physical) and feminine at the same time, that femininity and strength are not mutually exclusive, because even though she was dressed like a man, she never was naturally masculine or wanted to be a man, it was due her circumstances. That's what it means the expression since a lot of movies and marketing always try to masculinize female characters to convey strength and competence, sort of "be more like men to be strong, smart, this or that..."
Hello from Rwanda. Just an interesting note, but we have a story here about a girl called Ndabaga. It goes pretty much the same as Mulan. Her father is in the army and you could only leave if a son or brother came to relieve you. He only has a daughter, so she cuts off her breasts and learns to fight in order to take his place. She beats the men at everything and some of them become jealous. Eventually, one of them discovers that she is a girl and tells the king, who falls in love with her for her dedication to her father, marries her, and decrees that anyone who does not have a son to replace them can go home.

Can we also talk about how the transition from "A Girl Worth Fighting For" to the scene of the ruined village where they find the little girl's doll, is an amazing way to show the soldiers transitioning from boys to men? Let me explain: through "A Girl Worth Fighting For", they're basically singing about how they're fighting for the potential of getting a girl, of getting a reward basically. But in the next scene, they get their actual girl worth fighting for; the little girl who was presumably killed in the attack. They are no longer fighting for a potential reward; they are fighting for the innocent lives that were lost there, and fighting so that no more civilians will have to die

So I hope this doesn't get buried. Because two of my animation professors worked on the original Mulan. Specifically in the special effects department. The intro sequence of the ink painting was originally going to be Chinese shadow puppetry briefly explaining the ballad and setting the scene. They were trying to figure out a way to make the puppets slowly come in and out of focus as they were "brought against" the rice paper and then taken back. Unfortunately, this research was costing too much, and they still had a lot of other effects to make, so the intro was switched to the one in the movie.
Some other fun facts:
All of the flags are 3D animated. My professor had a coworker run up and down the hallway with a giant flag to study how it moved.
The cricket cage and comb are also 3D. Basically anything that looks like it would be a PAIN to animate by hand was done in 3D. This also includes the ever-famous "Hun Charge" scene.
This movie was created primarily by the now defunct Orlando Studio in Florida. This studio would go on to make Lilo and Stitch.
That's sick!
amazing! Makes sense that studio made these two films
I am also taking animation in school. Isn't it amazing to learn about your fave movies from the peeps who MADE them?! Plus they all like, know each other!
Oh yeah I saw a talk from a professor on that.
The moment you realize those guys got paid to run down a hall waving flags for research, you know they are living the life! LOL XD
The opening of Mulan, the ink painting, inspired me to try that style. I still love to draw like that. Clouds especially
It is absolutely beautiful every time I see it.

As a fellow Asian-parent-haver, hearing "why didn't she come back with a boyfriend?" is something every atom of my being can relate to.

Shan-Yu's name essentially being Yams just brightened my morning honestly! I also had no idea him and his army were suppose to represent a certain race, as I kid I always thought he was some ghoul and not human due to his eyes and strength; also his coldness.
I like that even though not all of it's accurate it's still mostly tasteful or was done a specific way so chinese audience could still interpret it (and a few western things so the west didn't feel totally lost the entire time, the breakfast smile made me smile as a kid because tht's such a goofy thing to do here in the west); like the writing being a modern modern chinese form instead of the kind you'd see back then. Really interesting to get some insight on the shrine though! As a kid even I thought it was a bit odd even though I didn't really know the culture. Most inaccuries were either an overlook, could be overlooked/unnoticed, or were simply done for comedic effect which gave the movie a lot of the charm people loved it for
So nickname him the Yam King.
7:58 I’m a white Australian who loves this movie. When I was little I used to watch my DVD of Mulan constantly. The really funny thing to me was that there was a special feature on the DVD that explained chopstick etiquette and most definitely highlighted just how much of a no-no sticking your chopsticks upright in your food. So, it was pretty funny noticing the rice bowl in this scene. Maybe the filmmakers should have watched the special features. 😂
"I tried to be white once. Never again."
"The palace is guarded by gay lions."
"Why isn't Shang in drag?"

Three years later and this just popped up for me. I appreciate all the cool info! I'm a history geek, but Chinese history is... a lot. There's so much to take in, it gets jumbled in my brain.
In regards to the ink brush paintings, it took a lot of skill, focus, and practice to not have any errors, which is an incredible skill. And the paintings are beautiful, one of my favorite art styles. The minimalism of it captures so much subtle detail without making it distracting.
Your point about the tiny waist thing! Totally! I think about this a lot because I love fashion history and looking at Chinese fashion, it was very tent-like big and bulky clothing that DID NOT accentuate the waist 🤣🤣💖
You know, it's nice to hear someone say "it's fine to be historically innacurate as long as I'm having a good time." There's something about that line that just gives me some strange sense of warmth.
After an era of bad Nostalgia Critic/Cinema Sins criticism, hearing the actually sane appropriate criticism is truly a treat

The 90s Mulan really hit emotionally.
And yeh, Sang would have rocked the eyeliner.
It is interesting that at a time when researching all this was much more difficult (and people in general were less aware of respecting other cultures) most of the historical errors in the film are related to sacrifices made to make the narrative more interesting or limitations in the animation
It's funny to hear so many people looking for "historical errors" in myths and legends. That makes no sense. It's a STORY, not a documentary.
"ping, if you were a girl i'd kiss you"
this would have been everything if they'd put it in, i'm so sad now
I can see it in my mind..."Ping, I could kiss you!"

i remember having an argument with somebody once about the movie hercules because it didn't follow the actual myth and had too many historical inaccuracies but like, its a great movie that was made for kids. I think it hercules' original myth he had to kill his own father or something (unless im thinking of oedipus but a lot of them killed their dads in those stories ok) and they couldn't have shown that, but it was still obvious that it was ancient greece, and the story still worked. in my opinion you're right- historical accuracy in these movies is cool to see and a fun little easter egg if you know the history involved, and it should be at least somewhat culturally accurate, but the main purpose of a movie is to tell a good story and entertain the audience.
In the og myths Hercules was driven into a battle rage by Hera his STEPmother (cruel stepmothers go back WAAY farther than Walt Disney himself) and killed his wife (yes, Megara) and kids and had to do those 12 labors (it was supposed to be 10 but he got marked down for 2 of them)
Tbh, acnient Greek mythology is like every myth. They're full of very bullshit and complicated details that look like the writers were smoking canabis while being on tight deadline of submission. So I encourage creative liberty to make these kind of works into movies. Same to game. I'm tired of anything getting realistic while the gameplay is just copy pasted of other game. Gimme something entertaining lol
Myths don't have "historical inaccuracies" They are STORIES, not historical accounts.
