Hi guys... minute 1:31, the painted Specialized Evade helmet... it's mine! The feathers are from a sparrow... not an eagle! It was painted by a friend that does those type of jobs. The theme of the customization relates to my Air Force background.

Roth is a special place for James, would it be possible to see a story about Roth through James’ eyes. The lead up to race day, his home stay experience highlighting his genuine love and care for his host, and what it was like crossing the line first in a time of 7:59.59. 😊

Major pain not knowing that we couldn't have the bottle cage turned around. Luckily the guy behind me had an Allen key or I wouldn't get into T1 and thanks to the Scott mechanic for getting me sorted... how did this not get communicated? It was carnage... hate I missed you guys!

They also said everyones helmet on their bikes couldn't be clipped up. Only found that out of race morning because an announcer said. After most people were done with racking the bikes etc....

The Problem was not, that the bottle wasn't allowed to be turned arround. The Problem was, that the bottle itself ist not allowed to be protrude in to the frame. It must stay at the length of the handlebar.

@@martinh.2196that rule does not exist and is not written anywhere which is why race morning it was allowed again and almost any pro had their bottles way back over the frame again. Some even with a double bottle holder 😅

The rule with the bottle doesn't exist and the limit with the steering axle was randomly made up.
Half of the refs said it was for our safety to not crush our chest with the bottle, the other half said it is because some people just exaggerating after bottle in suit being banned and they made super long bottle cages to get the effect.
They relied on the rule about equipment being mainly/ only for aero effects being disallowed.
It was a real joke being told that the moment checking in your bike. They could have shared their intention to place this rule for the event 3 days ahead and everything would have been OK. But they probably didn't make it up yet back then.
My Speedmax frame size S, long stem and long extensions, all to the max, was judged legal after moving the computer and bottle mount as far to the front as possible. The chief of the refs was at my bike to give me the go. (For me... a guy who needed 4 h 50 min for the bike course :D)
And for what I saw on the course next day, they didn't bother what was on your bike. Even Magnus had it quite far back.
But that rule being made up is my only complaint about this year's Challenge Roth. The rest was just great.
Edit because it might be unclear: The mess with the made up rule is not the organizers' fault. The german triathlon union and the bavarian subsection caused it.

In addition to this, this made-up rule (or interpretation of any vague existing rule on bike safety) was handled differently at the two entries to T1: At one entry, they explained the rule as Leon Chevalier did (bottle can not extent beyond the axis of steering), at the other entry, the bottle also had to face forward. I was not even told that my setup might be illegal at the check-in but because I hard that other people got a DQ warning for similar setups, I double checked with the ref. He told me that he himself does not get the rule, especially because it was not enforced properly (Didlev, Baekkegard, etc. all breaking it while other pros had to change their setup). I was only allowed to carry a 500ml bottle since a 750ml, which they provide during the race at the aids, was too long.
Final words: this was actually not the fault of challenge Roth but solely the German triathlon union or more specifically the Bavarian section of it, since they provide the refs and enforce the rulebook. We had similar issues with made-up rules at 70.3 Kraichgau where we were told that nothing on you cockpit can extent beyond the hight of the bar ends.

@LeonBdd-t7v this information you provided that Challenge Roth isn't on the hook for the rules and the German triathlon league is crucial information that everyone should know so they don't blame the event organizers. Which this comment was like on reddit so it could be up voted to the top

I recently broke a valve extender on my 88mm full carbon wheels as I was setting the bike up in the car park. As a result, I had to run it with the very old (possibly cracked) 58mm wheel I use when the bike is on the car carrier. Luckily, it was only a sprint distance - but a bike with a full carbon 88 on the front and an old alloy / carbon 58 on the back looked kind of odd. It was also interesting racing it on a 12 year old tyre and with carbon-specific brake pads on a wheel they weren't designed for!!!

I face my bottle backwards because my computer is above it. I’ve no way of knowing if it’s more aero, and neither do you, without a wind tunnel.
You can’t just eyeball aero test. A bottle down the top is aero because it splits the air around your chest with help from the clothing, creating a V shape. A bottle behind a steering axis does not.

Time to ban carbon bikes and most technologies offering unfair advantages, bring triathlon to the GOAT era Mark Allen, none of that expensive nonsense existed, this allowed those excellent modern athletes access to a sport which has unfortunately lost itself, the entrance tag will soon reach formula one proportions preventing the best from entering.
