Thanks, Harri. The original version was an instrumental called "Soulful Strut" recorded by Young-Holt Unlimited, written by Eugene Record (lead singer of the Chi-Lites). It was first recorded with lyrics as "Am I The Same Girl" by Barbara Acklin. The most famous version was, of course, by the immortal Dusty Springfield. But, this cover by Corinne and Andy has its charms, as they modernize the beat with some Afro-Caribbean rhythms. Corinne & Andy are still at it, into their 60s. Peace out.

Great song John I remember this by Young Holt Unlimited.

The truth is more complicated -- but interesting. It was first recorded with Barbara Acklin on vocals, but the producer removed her voice from the track and replaced it with a piano track. THAT was released as "Soulful Strut," but it was originally "Am I the Same Girl." And neither Young nor Holt actually played on the track, despite it being credited to them! Swing Out Sister's version of "Am I the Same Girl" is actually the most successful recording of the vocal version of the song.

This is why I love UA-cam so much. How did I not know this history of one of my favorite songs? Thank you both for that info!

Swing out Sister deserves a closer look. They are so diverse and interesting.

Barbra Acklin did and WROTE the ORIGINAL version, but her record label reissued it WITHOUT her vocals. THAT song became „Soulful Strut“ by Young Holt Unlimited.

I'm aware of the aforementioned versions, but, for my money, my fave is the Swing Out Sister version. They just seemed to have so much fun with it.

Barbara Acklin had the original in 1968, and one yr and my favorite singers Dusty Springfield covered it, fantastic as usual! This chick killed it, love it also. One of my favorite songs ever!!

I usually preffer original recording of classic songs, but in the case of "Am I the Same Girl" I preffer the Swing out Sister's one.
Corinne and the band did a wonderful job.

Northern soul, Manchester at it finest. Corrine was a big Sandy Shaw fan. The rythm section though! How can a bass sound so FAT! 🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎

Swing Out Sister is criminally ignored.
It's a shame that you haven't known how busy Swing Out Sister is.
During the shelter-in-place they posted videos of the bands rehearsals on UA-cam. They really are thoughtful to we their fans.
If you really want the answer to 'where are they now' query - Swing Out Sister is alive and well in Manchester UK.
Although they tour throughout Japan because the Japanese are avid fans of Corinne Drewery and Andy Connell aka Swing Out Sister.
It's the same story in the United States. The only time I was able to see them live was back in 2004.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they have more albums/CDs/DVDs than Lisa Stansfield.
If anyone has been missing from recording music it would most likely be Stansfield.

Barbara Acklin recorded it in '68, then Dusty Springfield in '69.

I never knew they did a cover of this song. As Mark says here, it was a song by Barbara Acklin, but the tune was originally released as an instrumental called "Soulful Strut" by the group Young-Holt Unlimited. The interesting thing was that Barbara's vocal version came first. Her vocals were stripped from the recording and new instrumentation was added, which became the Young-Holt Unlimited single. Then after that instrumental version became a hit, they dug up Barbara's vocal version and released that -- but alas, her version was not nearly as big on the charts. However, Barbara did hit the top 20 that same year with a song called "Love Makes A Woman".

I knew this as the instrumental, "Soulful Strut, " back 1968. Our rock band used to play this, as it was a hit on the radio at the time, and got everyone on the dance floor.
Later, when Swing Out Sister came out with the vocal version, I loved it even more. It was also a hit on the radio and on MTV videos. She is a great singer, with a great voice.

"The" vocal version? There was more than one vocal version. Barbara Acklin's and Dusty Springfield's vocal versions were much earlier, 1968 and 1969. Swing Out Sister is not a "she"; it is a trio that became a duo. I think you meant Corinne Drewery is a great singer and voice, and I agree.

Swing Out Sister is still recording, and I'd recommend checking out their most recent album, _Almost Persuaded_ which is quite lovely. Thanks for this reaction video, and I hope you react to more S.O.S. stuff.

This song does something to my soul too. I heard it once around 1995 at my mates house and it stayed with me. Been looking for it since and found it a few years ago. It is indeed a cover.

Best time of my life when this album was released, one of those perfect summers, met the love of my life, seemed like time stood still, nothing would change never... it lasted for two beautiful years, then his family went back to their country and lost contact, some things weren't easy back then. Anyway, beautiful album that holds my best memories. Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina 👍👋.

Harri! Try the tune, Now you’re not here, by Swing Out sister. Do the version with the lyrics on the screen. It’s one of my favorites, and I know you will like it as well. It’s always fun watching your reactions!

It's such a great, sweet song that I can't believe it wasn't a bigger hit for Barbra Acklin or Dusty Springfield, or that it took until 1992 for someone else to have success with it

Barbara Acklin recorded it first. It failed to become a hit. A few months later, producer Carl Davis removed Acklin’s vocals and added a piano solo. He called the instrumental Soulful Strut and attributed it to Young-Holt Unlimited. There’s even some question as to whether Eldee Young and Redd Holt even played on it.
