You are so right my brother! When I was an apprentice electrician I was treated with nothing but contempt. I learned to keep my pie hole shut and man up and take it. When I became a journeyman I treated my apprentices with kindness but when they goofed up on something I let them know how they really screwed up and they could get themselves killed, but I always let them know the reason I was chewing them out was for their own safety. I am now retired but I was always proud to see these apprentices take the exam and become journeyman electricians! That trade has served me very well over the years and I was proud to be a heavy industrial journeyman electrician. I sure miss it!
ya, I worked with assholes when I was an apprentice to, but I would not sit and take it. maybe I am irresponsible, fuck a job, I will not allow someone to treat me like shit. I am a journeyman now, and treat my apprentices good, unless they fuck up. Of corse we talk shit to each other all day.
This is pretty good advice for any job. I have always said there are 2 types of people on the job. Those that make themselves look good by bringing teammates up with them. Then there's the guy who tries to look good by making everybody else look bad. Be the first guy. It will pay off in the end.
I don't talk much. If I have a question I research it at home. When at work, I'm either working as hard and fast as possible, or I'm thinking ahead of time what the journeyman will need and getting it before they even think to shout the command. I got 2 raises in 4 months. Started at 19 now I'm making 35 because of how much of an impact I make by learning so much and doing so much and thinking so far ahead.
I worked for over 38 years as a construction electrician, and I can count on one hand the good guys I worked with. I'm sure there are rotten people in every line of work but I am just talking about this line of work. If a person lives long enough they will be able to see just how low some people are. Good video, yes there is always something to do, (even if it's just to clean up) .
Great advice, some people don't like apprentices because they are probably annoying to the higher ups. But everyone has to start somewhere that is what I try to keep in mind. I like the advice about getting up early, that morning dump is a must.
Wow, everything you said I am going through right now at my job! It's hard to keep a positive attitude when the guys on the job make you feel worthless to them. I just started out with no experience 3 months ago and I feel I have grown leaps and bounds since day one. I've even been given a raise already. This last week I've been given a hard time and was questioned as to what I had accomplished the last two hours the day before. It through me for a loop as I am always keeping busy. I never stand around and look for something to do and if I can't find anything to do I ask what's next. I try and push myself to go faster while still trying to do good quality work and I find I make more mistakes. I was told focus on doing things right and speed will follow but now they are telling me to speed things up! It's very frustrating!
ive never been an electrician but i used to be a contractor (cultured marble install) and when i started out my boss was just like your saying... i could be outside all day busting ass burning myself out on everything i did and my boss would come out yelling at me making me feel worthless. Then i would see the other contractors helpers straight up dragging ass at the shop in the morning. I just focused on improving myself and tried my best to ignore my alcoholic bosses bullshit and 1 year later i was contracting for the same company he was! Just stick with it dude and focus on improving yourself.bosses will always try to push you farther for more money in their pocket, and you will probably catch yourself wanting to once you have a helper.
Your comment was a year ago, but I’m the same exact position as you are. This is my 2nd month, I try hard, don’t go on my phone, and try to not stand around, and I still feel worthless. My foreman seem to not like working with me, but I try hard
Sound advice. My first job was a shitshow with my coworkers literally cursing me out for not being fast enough to the point where the project manager actually called me personally to apologize for their unprofessional behavior, on my FIRST DAY. But then my lead tech put it to me this way: "Work harder on yourself than your job, and you'll be successful."
I had my 1st day work experience and some stupid things I did was give a guy a light switch instead of the actual light he asked for , but the people I worked with knew it was my first day and I can make mistakes , bad luck being with the wrong people
Most of the guys I have met in construction are there to make money and have some laughs, but theres always a jack ass on the job. Bottom line is that they will only be there to annoy you for a short time. Standing up to these bullies usually works but if its you foreman, then you gotta just put up with it and let it go in one ear and out the other.
Lots of good advice here for beginners or even seasoned guys, One thing I can add to that is once you leave work leave work problems at work if you bring them home they will become home problems. Lots of good advice in any trade or any job for that matter.
Great video...I'm a woman apprentice on an all dude crew. I have had to learn to take some teasing but I am all about asking questions and on my day off watching videos about electricity. Ultimately at the end of the day we are like family...hustling together to get the job done and at the end of the week we have a paycheck that looks pretty good. The best thing almost all of the journeymen have told me during my first few weeks was....there was a time when I knew only about as much as you do now. One master electrician told me...when he started out, the only tools he could identify by name were a flat and phillips head screwdriver. They make me feel good...also biggest lesson....get it done neat....speed will come with time but neat/accurate is the foundation of a good electrician.
Thank you for that advice! I am on my 3rd week as an apprentice and so far I like it. I am doing my best in learning everything. After watching this it has given me more confidence
:54 "don't take things personally" Awesome!! Generally people don't see the sign when they come on to a jobsite, but the sign usually reads: "leave your feeling here."
My boss would work until midnight everyday if he could. Fuck that, I have a life outside of this shit. I'm a journeyman, but I do not live for this shit. Good thing my boss has been my friend since we were kids, I tell him to fuck off, I'm going home.... and we do.
I’m in the IBEW. OT is not mandatory in my local, but other locals may have their contract structured differently. Non-union I would guess varies company to company and maybe project to project. And maybe even person to person.
What was stressful for me was being a green electrician put in charge of a bunch of guys who didn’t speak English. They were paid by each light they installed in the overhead of a drug store. Although they were very fast, the work was very shotty; wire was not properly secured into the tops of the light fixtures; & I found lots of arcing in the overheads above the false ceiling. I guess they were not used to someone calling on their mistakes. As a result, my boss fired me because these guys did not like working with me. Good grief ! 🤨
Thank you! Exactly what I’m going through. I️ have struggled not taking it personal and it affects my job performance. I️ will remember this wisdom and hopefully stop the trend when I️ make journeyman. Keep up the good work!
Thanks a million. The talk you gave is about many things I wanted to know and you are the first to talk about them. Even about what time to get going. I've trained myself to be up at 4:30 am every day, that's 2 hours before my old bed time. I'm coming out of retirement and I would really like to get 40 a week no matter what and I want to grow. I've done basically easy stuff that I couldn't mess up until now. Now I want to be a journeyman. I've had classes with a journeyman and got an A+. I'M HUNGRY!!
All sound advice, brother,. You nailed it with don't let it getting you down. Been a sparky going on 15yrs, am I the best, he'll no. Took a long time to get licenced, now I'm licenced in two countries. Started my apprenticeship in the states with an amazing company. Had to move because of immigration issues. Had to do my apprenticeship all over again in Canada. Main thing is be humble and check any ego atvthd door. Enough said, I treat my apprentices like my kids, joking when needed, father figure when needed. Great vid by the way
I have over a month in my new job as a commercial apprentice I love it, but there are times where I simply don't think I'm cut out to be an electrician.
wow, everything you talked about in this video is exactly what I go through at my construction job especially the " always something to do" nobody tells me but I learned how to look "busy" when work is slow or when the job is complete and there's nothing else to do. You're not crucified as bad when you're hustling WITH the guys. The skilled trades is very interesting career
All good advice, definitely don't take things personally. I advise my new guys of my attitude levels. I teach on the job too. My first level is getting to know them and see what kind of experience they have with tools. Level two is starting with the basic skills and introduction to material and how to do things. Level three is building on the basics to more advanced skills and knowledge. Show them, let them take a turn at it, monitor and give pointers, then give them a small area at first to do. Evaluate occasionally but don't stand over them.
Very inspiring dude. Thank you for being very informative. I am about to start my courses on Electrician very soon and I just cant wait. I have known less than a hand full of people that have been involved with the field and are very happy to have stepped into that kind of job. I am like every beginner..(or should I say future apprentice lol) looking to see what it takes, how it feels, and what it is like to be an Electrician. I have seen several videos so far, but you have been one of the few inspiring. I am very excited to proceed with this decision. Post more videos too! I subbed to eliminate the amount of subs you had. *666*. Now its 667 lol. Anyways sorry for the long message. Good luck to all whos headed the same direction!

Thanks for the video man. I have been working for about 2 months now with no experience and im feeling like a burden sometimes. Im only getting like 3 to 5 hours per day because of the holidays i guess its slow so ive been discouraged and have thought about giving up on this particular job but i really like this trade so im glad to have found this video.
The way you think really reminds me of the way I do. I've been oscillating between being a mechanic, electrician, or a pilot. Definitely going to get a trade. I'm pretty sure after watching your videos, I'm going to be an electrician. Thank you for solidifying my convictions, you're the man.
+Derek Chessik Thanks partner, just remember that it takes a soldier to make it out there in the electrical field. If you choose to be an electrician you're going to learn a lot about a lot of things, but being a super human can set you apart from most people. If you stay off drugs, and master the trade you can do really well in business. Just make sure you're willing to sacrifice what it takes to achieve it. It takes a lot of energy during the work day especially for apprentices. Make sure you take good care of yourself, so that way when you get off work you still have stamina to take care of your family. Good luck to you.
I feel you on those points. I'm really careful with my diet and am currently going to the gym frequently. As for drugs and alcohol, I have no interest in them besides for the occasional beer. The reason your video struck me so much was the honesty behind it, and your obvious love for the challenge of the job. I personally enjoy challenges and growing as a person. From the way you described being an electrician. It sounds perfect. Thanks again mate!
@@juansaldana84 Been fantastic. Was non union for a while started hating it, joined the union. Was on jobs for Tesla Charging Stations, Nuclear Power Plants, Hershey Candy Plant, and lots of Hospital jobs so far. I love my job.
@@suheilsamih1485 The field is great and yeah it takes some physical work but not back breaking all the time. You pretty much choose, but standing... You usually have to do that the whole shift.
Coming from the railroad trade trust me you have a very nice schedule haha. That's very common to work those hours. But I'm looking to switch careers and this is good advice!
I’m currently an apprentice but man let me tell you, I’ve taken alotta shit from my foreman. I just shut my mouth and accept it. I don’t talk back and I don’t talk shit, but it does get frustrating. I’m very green, have no prior experience, so I get it, I just need to learn to not take it personally
I'm a general operative on site working with sparks doing cable pulling and this is exactly what its like I only left school haha. I've been fucked right in the deep end.
Did you start out with e a union or non union? I'm currently enrolled at my CC to get a certification in electrical technology. But im considering joing the IBEW or IEC. I just want to get experience and become the best electrician I can be
So true,I love to flip greenies shit to see if they got a sense of humor, which is a important job site quality. I'm not an asshole to em, cause I get they got stress learning a new skill, but I need a guy to have fortitude. When a guy gets chapped over job site banter I tell him I mess with guys I like,if they still are easy to anger I pitch em cause that's a sign of a guy who is full of drama and drama slows productivity.
I'm not sure if you answer comments but it would be much appreciated if you did.. I'm in high school right now and I want to be an electrician, but I'm very introverted. Do you know any introverted electricians?
+ZOMBlFY Yeah man, work on becoming a hybrid between an extrovert and a introvert. You can have the best of both worlds. If you have what it takes to be an electrician you can do anything.
I realised I'm pretty introvert and been doing my apprenticeship for about 5 weeks now. As you get comfortable you will learn when to come out of your shell as time goes by. But in the long run if you want to run your own business and what not your gonna have to work on talking to people and be a bit more out going
"take a good dump" lmao , dude i learned electrical from a job corps program and my first day of work my boss says "i need you to "tie in " a couple wires and believe it or not my teacher never taught me none of that......few weeks later i was fired because i kept messing up smh, now im discouraged man my teacher barely had us do hands on because students kept playing around in the labatory so i lost out...
No we need our apprentices to fall in line and not make mistakes that can kill us talking as electrician and that has been a apprentice found a first week apprentice in a 277 panel switching breakers for 110 breaker for temp power told him u can not be in the electrical room without a mechanic and never touch live panels
Looks like not the job for me then cos anyone talks to me in a way I dont like then the red mist will descend and theyll get both barrells , metaphorically speaking.
hey S33 Electrical i wanted to ask. i'm leaning towards being an electrician i want it as a career BUT can you be a journeyman electrician your whole electrical career? becuase i don't like the idea of being a master electrican all the things that come with being a master electrician doesn't appeal to me at all. but journeyman fits me will. i would like to hear from you it would be really appreciated
Craig, I would say that if you want to be in construction, and you have what it takes to earn your journeyman license do it. You can go your whole life working for a company and be well off, or If later you decide that you want do something less labor intense you could always become a general contractor. In commercial electric.. Electricians are on the job from the projects start to the projects finish, so you'll be exposed to every stage of construction. I think I would make a fine GC even though that's not my current career path. 97% of people have to choose a career at some point, and I don't think being an electrician is a bad deal if you make good choices in life. Ultimately its for you decide because it's your life, and I want to encourage everyone to be responsible for what they choose to do.
HI I like your videos and I would like to try and be an electrician but I've never been very smart and have always hated math so my question is do you have to be smart to be an electrician? A response would be cool thanks
+Dovahkiin KhajiitMaster I think that everyone has unlimited potential. I'd bet that you're smarter than you think. The answer to your question is difficult because anyone can learn how to do electrical work, but yes you do have to have some book smarts to get fully certified, and run a legitimate business. Whatever you do make good choices, and hang around winners. Become a life long learner to educate yourself & you'll find your way. - Thanks
i have the opportunity to become an apprentice electrician. i have no 0 training in construction or electrical work. i am a hard worker and tend to learn fast, but fear id be wasting my time/the employers time by taking this. any suggestions anybody? is a big opportunity for me but dont want to make the wrong choice.
Austin Anderson I'm only 14/15 but my brother has just accepted an apprenticeship as a builder. I myself, want to become an electrician... If you don't accept this opportunity you've been given, you may not be given another. Whether it is low pay and harder work, it is all experience and a start for a career option you'll have forever 👍
+Austin Anderson I'm In the same boat I am 16 and looking to become an electrician because if I can make 60-70 k being an electrician I'm not trying to go to college
It's pretty much shut up, do what you're told, and learn. You went through electricians school. Great, that gives you the ticket to go out and learn how to actually do the job. If you can't do the scut work well and with attention to detail, why should you be trusted doing work that could get you or somebody else hurt or killed if you do it wrong? While you're doing those tasks, observe. Usually, the more you learn and the more you start contributing to job progress, the less crap you'll have to take and the more willing others will be to teach you new things and let you do them.

I'm glad you made this video, every bit of advice helps, I'm not there to make friends, its important to just get the job done
Hey thanks for the advice brother. I just started about 2 months ago and everything you said is very relevant to my life now.
Great Video! Thanks for the heads up and I hope to meet a coworker like you!!! Sent out resumes and hope to find work soon as an apprentice.
Thanks man. I appreciated this a lot.
Thick skin, eat good, big dump. Living like a champ.
Great video. I'll be practicing these virtues when I start.
Thank you very much for this video man! I start my first day tomorrow.
Jake Eakins how’s everything goin for u in the field
Yo jake I too thinking of becoming electrician. Is it physically demanding? I have knee problem i cant bare standing for long periods of time. :(
@@juansaldana84 Been fantastic.
Jake Eakins great job bro!! Iam 2 yrs in it so far!!
Good advice. It's really nothing personal. They love to get your goat. Don't have a goat to get. They'll move on to someone else.
Thanks man helped a lot I'm getting ready to take an apprenticeship with British gas soon
how's that going mate?
The apprenticeship i mean.
just started my appretoceship today and this video helped a lot.
Kurt Liebau how is it so far?
Cool video, very genuine. I'm considering finding a trade and being an electrician is one of the things I'm thinking about.
Man gets attacked by wasp lol
🤣
🐝
Great video, if it's possible I would like to see more videos about what it'd like being apprentice
this video just made me open up and realize everything youve said is really true.
Coming from the railroad trade trust me you have a very nice schedule haha. That's very common to work those hours. But I'm looking to switch careers and this is good advice!
You seem like a ripper bloke to have a beer with! We should become mates
Ok I hit subscribe when you told me to take a good dump in the morning, I was like “ok yeah this guy gets it!”
Great video , very good advice , thank you very much , my friend .
Thanks bro for the video keep your head up!!!
Good advice about there always being something to be done.
Great advice, thanks bro👍
10.53 Eat a good meal and take a good dump. That's all you need to know to be ready to be an electrician.
Thank You for this great video, made my day!
Great video!
thanks for the advice, they are really helpful for a beginner like me.Good job and thanks again Sam.
I'm a general operative on site working with sparks doing cable pulling and this is exactly what its like I only left school haha. I've been fucked right in the deep end.
Awesome vid. This is great advice.
Solid advice.
I'm in Austin also , but I'm not an electrician yet .
Thanks mate, great advice
there is word named " swap-meet" if you're considering to buy good used tools for starting ...!
Thank you buddy!
Going to a trade in a few months hopefully this helps.
Thanks for the advice
"take a good dump" lmao , dude i learned electrical from a job corps program and my first day of work my boss says "i need you to "tie in " a couple wires and believe it or not my teacher never taught me none of that......few weeks later i was fired because i kept messing up smh, now im discouraged man my teacher barely had us do hands on because students kept playing around in the labatory so i lost out...
Im not making friends, im just gone do as im told and get on with my life. I got enough friends
Cool advice!
thanks man...some good advice
GUARDING BY ELEVATION FOR 600- VOLT CIRCUIT REQUIRES AN ELEVATION OF?
thanks for posting this video. great advice.
Very Informative!
Your awesome mate I'm from LONDON Can I be your friend ? There's never a dumb question Sam lol
Does this video apply to residential electricians?
EvaSlash : No. Residential electricians are usually dumb.
Do you have to come to work sober ?
great video
No we need our apprentices to fall in line and not make mistakes that can kill us talking as electrician and that has been a apprentice found a first week apprentice in a 277 panel switching breakers for 110 breaker for temp power told him u can not be in the electrical room without a mechanic and never touch live panels
This isn't a democracy it's a dictator ship and I'm the dick
Thank You.
Looks like not the job for me then cos anyone talks to me in a way I dont like then the red mist will descend and theyll get both barrells , metaphorically speaking.
Sadly, construction is a lot like highschool; one big masculine chest thumping contest.
Yeah I figure that is the case man and it runs rampid in my family and way worst in the world
hey S33 Electrical i wanted to ask. i'm leaning towards being an electrician i want it as a career BUT can you be a journeyman electrician your whole electrical career? becuase i don't like the idea of being a master electrican all the things that come with being a master electrician doesn't appeal to me at all. but journeyman fits me will. i would like to hear from you it would be really appreciated
S33 Electrical b
- Thanks
thanks a lot for the reply i'm just wondering if its mainly math that you need to know
I'd also like to know whether or not math is highly involved on the job as an Electrician. Math is not my forte as well.
Iv also notived guys like this dude will plot against you too
Buy Klein Tools 🆒👍👍👍
Take a good dump lmaooo you deserve a like for that hahaha
Hey man, I have a ? about voltage spike... lemme know if you have time to help, thx
+Randy Mathews Sure man, What's your question?
+S33 Electrical What did the fox say?
+ButtsnifferStinkerface Animefan69 have you ever seen chef
i have the opportunity to become an apprentice electrician. i have no 0 training in construction or electrical work. i am a hard worker and tend to learn fast, but fear id be wasting my time/the employers time by taking this. any suggestions anybody? is a big opportunity for me but dont want to make the wrong choice.
Thank you!
+Austin Anderson I'm In the same boat I am 16 and looking to become an electrician because if I can make 60-70 k being an electrician I'm not trying to go to college
Use a derma-roller on your face to get rid of that nasty ache scaring.
this is a good video
I hear ya
I'm going to talk to a company today .
always take a good dump lol
Yes thats how the experienced workers know how to get paid for a visit to the porta john and just get a little break
good tips brother. I agree. Local 11
And if you get enough brownie points, you get to kiss the boss's ass!
