Being hearing impaired I end up ordered one of these, AS I never had enough money to buy the Bellman & Symfon one which I have now but its playing up and not letting the alarm to go off but yet it says it has. But I hope it will be the same. and get least 4 years or more out of it as I use it to wake me up for work.
Oh most definitely in some cases but some people who are Deaf need a very loud alarm clock. It's personal preference though, some people like to use the vibrating bed shaker without the sound.

can you set it to a low volume or silent too? I only need the vibration function and don't want to wake my flatmates.
You sure can, you can choose the vibration mode and it will only alert the bed shaker!
btw waking up suddenly makes you sleepy in a bad mood and less rested
