- Ranger Matt Atkinson leads a battle walk covering the actions of Alfred Iverson and Edward O'Neal's brigades on July 1.
Note: A major heat wave resulted in the walk being done entirely in the shade on Oak Hill for visitor safety.
Ranger Atkinson and the NPS hold the rights to the notes and lecture.
I really hope Matt has an idea of the amount of fans he has. Not all of us can make it to one of these walks. Thank you so much for posting these!
Agreed he’s most entertaining and n formative: I’m disabled and learning a great deal watching and listening from my wheelchair) ( from Ohio and now reside in VA which of course has many battlefields have a lot to visit and see if and when I can drive and walk again😬
@@lespangen Heyhey! It is what you make it new friend! Try your best to enjoy all the battlefields & history, luckily there are alot more wheelchair accessibility & people out there always willing to give a extra hand if needed. Virginia is very beautiful!!!

In history class you only get the big picture. With Matt you get the grunts eye view, well done! Matt's the best.
Thank you for all the videos posted. Matt Atkinson presents the information of the battle so well that anyone who listens, can gain knowledge of the battle. As a dedicated member of the American Battlefield Trust. It is very nice to see the younger generations on our battlefields. Only through them can these battlefields be remembered in such a way that countless generations to come can benefit through it's understanding.

Tremendous videos and thx to ALL park ranger guides. Scraped my shin on a stone wall at cemetary hill while walking in the snow a few years ago. It was perfect. Hurt at Gettysburg. 😬 Visitor center and panorama room were excellent.

Just watched this excellent video and then noticed the longer redux version. Then I watched that :-) Oh well. Just reinforces the belief that Matt and Stuffwriter produce great informative videos.
I can remember this ground from an old game I loved in the mid-90s, Battleground 2:Gettysburg. Great to see the ground in this battle walk. Matt is great.

No Excuse for O'Neal however Iverson did try and redeem himself gaining plaudits for his work with the cavalry where he showed bravery and competence late in the war , Its debateable where Iverson was at the time his brigade advanced most sources put him in the rear of the brigade but not in the woods its also worth noting the lack of senior officers in the regiments and the reason why no skirmish lines were thrown out to add to that Baxter's union brigade were hard as nails veterans.
General Oneal is buried in my hometown of Florence Alabama theres a bridge here named for him He later became governor of Alabama

Thank you stuffwriter and Matt... The question I am left asking myself is this: If Rhoades was such a competent commander, Why did he order an attack into the face of withering cannon fire? Because he had ordered his troops to hide from said cannonade, by withdrawing into the woods they would have to leave to make this attack???
It's "Rodes"...but can you name one Civil War commander who did not order a frontal attack against artillery? Iverson and O'Neal had their attacks broken by infantry fire, by the way.

After listening again the troop losses seem incredible. Were the commanders really drunk before they lead the men to the slaughter ? Ah they hid in the rear.

I wish there weren’t so much traffic noise but the roads are main arteries from surrounding towns. I thought also with the intense heat battle tours were cancelled.

I honestly felt all such walks should have been cancelled. It was nonsense asking any employee to do an outdoor tour and dangerous for visitors. The park had no sense st all.
I guess everyone should just stay at home and watch television. I swear people are so pampered today they think anything with even a remote amount of any danger shouldn't be done. How about we just plaster everyone in Kevlar to make sure everyone is perfect safe? I have no idea how these tours are any more dangerous than people getting out of their cars and walking the battlefield or should people just sit in air conditioned busses and view everything out of a window?
