Definately a better screen. I do however like old school lcd screens so you can still read it without turning on the screen. I can never get myself to buy a UV-5R but I could get a new and improved model. :)
Ok why does almost everyone think that having a stopwatch on their handheld radio is such a great idea. I have used several Walkie talkies over the years. Not once have I thought, wow if this radio only had a stopwatch I'd buy a few more.
Just received one from Amazon - total fail. On VHF, the second harmonic was nearly 30 dB above the limit. You read that correctly - nearly 30 dB out of compliance. It will be going back asap.
Bought the UV17R and seems to be a nice HT so far. Definitely a design improvement over the UV5R. Extra battery with the USB-C connection is not easy to find however. I saw only one listing on Amazon with delivery ranging from mid-September to early October. Couldn't find any batteries listed on eBay or Baofeng's website. Also hoping the programming capability is eventually integrated with CHIRP as Baofeng's native programming software leaves a bit to be desired.
I got an orange one like yours, nothing will program it, including the software from Baofeng that you used on your black one. I'm eager to see what luck you had with that.
Purchased this radio about 2 months ago and overall it is an impressive radio for the price. However one glitch it has is when receiving a transmission from local repeaters and simplex, the first syllable is cut out before the rest of the transmission is heard. I have the battery save mode (menu option 3) set to Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
I am new to ham radio. Can you please refer me to a Basic how to work the radio for someone without any knowledge about any of this. I got the new uv17r. Not much out there for new users.
@@stevenmiscisin4892 someone said with the radio off, hold in the PTT, the am/fm button, the blue button and then turn on the radio. When I did that it appeared as though my radio was completely inoperable. Any button I pushed just turned on the flashlight. I removed the battery and reinstalled it and now I can TX/RX!!!

As always with any Chinese and especially Baofeng radio, is it really FCC certified? And when that question is asked, in a nutshell the FCC says in parts 90, 95, 97 that a radio that is intended for a particular service shall NOT be capable of being used on another service either by hardware or software, BY THE MANUFACTURER. In other words, out of the box it cannot be used in the Amateur service and say GMRS. For our purposes, if it can be manipulated to transmit outside of the Amateur bands, it cannot be marketed or sold in the U.S. I think all reviews of Chinese radios should always include this determination.
Chinese trickery again. Check out the FCC ID. Believe it or not, you will see that it is PART 15 CLASS B DIGITAL DEVICE certified *NOT PART 90, or any other applicable use. Back to their old tricks again
SERIOUSLY, if you don't even know how to spell upgrade, why would anyone trust anything in the video. If you're going to use the language, at least have the courtesy to use it correctly.
You know Baofeng is onto something when they have to worry about people cloning THEM.

@@Norseman2 I was able to find the software on the Miklor site. It was listed as Baofeng UV-18H nonGPS (P15UV v1.04). Good luck

Why does my radio manual say BF-17 series rather than UV-17R series? Did I get a different model? I ordered the UV17R.

So our 17 Pro GPS’s from AliExpress are fakes or vendor editions that do Air band and have a GPS?
They are real, hard to tell what is authentic though.

The pro comes with a USB charger and a few extras.

I did try programing yet. But a regular baofeng cable should work.
