#guitar #different #tunings
Great riff but when it hits that C standard, holy hell! It really came to life!
- WhyYy do you need another one guitar??
- I don't need a guitar, but the song is written in a standart drop #b## tuning..that's why I need it!
Pushing top-end of bass guitar into guitar bottom-end works for me. Careful to ensure the bass guitar grind doesnt mask guitar punchiness and they blend well. Awesome advice as always 👍
Great content as always! Maybe create a video where you teach some Cyhra riffs/licks/solos, for example the Game? 😛

that’s the beauty of guitar playing! trying with different tuning, different guitars and different amps. Is always what best fits the song. (and the mix)
Indeed!
Awesome video, as always Euge. I loved your explanation of how tuning effects the amps frequency response. Great way to think about pairing tunings with different amps.
I would love to know your recommendations on what string gauge you use for different drop tunings! Thank you for all the knowledge you regularly share with us.

@@EugeValovirta230V Amazing, thank you. I switched to DR Tite-Fit based on your suggestion from an earlier video. Wonderful strings with a unique sound and feel. Thanks again.
This vid makes me glad I bought creamback 65s. !!!!
🤣🤣 My wife tells me often "Why so many guitars???" I answer "tuning baby, tuning!! " 😉😂
Great content as always.... And brother, that Tokai is so nice!! That top is sick!
😎👌. Yeah! Thanks!
I've been in Drop A for ever and ever, after having been old enough to catch bands like Carcass at home in Liverpool, and then seeing bands like Quicksand playing in Drop D.
The thing I loved about B standard at first was how it resonated through your body in small venues. My last live band would play the majority of songs in Drop A and one or two in B.
From what you played, the C Standard on the ESP sounded best to me, especially when you play that run down to C Minor. 🤘🤘
Drop C# is the sweet spot for me 11-52 on my Jackson soloist for more old school groove, nu, thrashy metalcore vibe.
Then drop C 10-52 for my Ibanez rgd 26.5 scale. For a slightly more modern sound for big ambient cleans and then hm2 death metal/hardcore tones
🤟
Half step does magic sometimes! It can be like a whole new riff in some situations.
Thank you for your work Euge 🎯
Euge is the greatest!
The Master.
☺️🙏🕺
7:35 I was literally thinking this as I read the title ! I totally agree with you Euge, different tunings just give a different vibe, you can play the same riff and you just feel different with your attitude towards it and it changes the way you approach the rest of the arrangement. I do have a digitech drop which does allow you to do similar, but it's not the same feel (that being said, it is very good and about 90% there), and can feel a little off, but you get used to it - and is a heck of a lot cheaper than getting loads of guitars! That being said, more guitars is ALWAYS better !
Indeed! I use the Digitech drop live with Cyhra (for a few songs) and in those situations it works fine.
Fantastic. I use B standard (7-string), C standard, and Drop C.
Cool!
That particular riff sounded the best for me in E flat. Also that pink ESP is gorgeous.Never thought i would say this for a pink guitar.
👌😎
Nice work, Euge....
Thanks!
Euge - I picked up on something here: treble 4 (E), treble 5 (Eb), treble 6 (D) … as a starting point. I never thought of it that way - of course, what you said about settings makes total sense. My JCM800 is a bit brittle as I play in standard E for most of my 80s Hair Band tunes. Thanks for that bit of insight - I do use the wild twisty motion that you’ve demonstrated before, to hear the sonic movement of a knob when dialing in. As always, many thanks - Rock & Roll 🤘🤘
Glad to hear! Thanks!
Thanks Euge. Keep up the rocking mate 🇬🇧 🎸
Thanks, will do!
Myself. All my guitars are E Standard. You can make your playing heavy with pedals, strings, sound effects, etc. Great tutorial EV. Cheers🍺🍺🍺😎🎸
The heaviness can be applied with inverted power chords in standard
great video! I love using different tunings. I only have 3 guitars but they are all tuned differently: Steve Morse musicman tuned to E standard (occasionally drop D), Gibson Explorer tuned to either Eb or D standard (and also drop Db or C) and then Les Paul Custom tuned to C standard (very occasionally drop Bb). all 3 of those guitars have Steve Morse dimarzio pickups but they each sound totally different. the tunings make it even more so.
Cool, thanks!
I have a 30" guitar for A standard and sometimes, when I put heavier strings tunning like a bass. (Sound very very deep but without the body of a standard bass)
D A D F# A E is one of my favourite alternate tunings. Similar to dadgad, but has really nice shimmering high E. Third Eye Blind used it in a tune called Narcolepsy. That’s how I found out about it.
Very informative video Euge, I mostly tune to Csharp or D standard or E flat, but the lower tunings just has that low end punch.
Thanks!
Standard D - Shining (SWE) tuning and also ESP guitar model used in Shining. Pour les connaisseurs. 🍷
Back to the business!
The title of this video is quite self-explanatory.
Good.
My guitars stay in
E-flat
I have others that are in D
And
C #- c sharp is awesome., lolreally grinds :)
Yeah man I'm jammin with some guys in d standard on one guitar and c# standard on another. I also have a 7 string in A# standard. I hardly ever play in e standard anymore except on my acoustic.
Different tunings are great. The same riff has a different character when it is in another tuning. But when you prefer Floyd Rose bridges and Randy Rhoads style rhythm playing you need a guitar for every tuning. And then there are all the pickup combinations.
Maybe that is why I have so many guitars.
It is much easier to track rhythms on fixed bridge guitars but then you can't do fun whammy tricks like Alexi Laiho.
Indeed. One of the reasons why pretty much all my Floyds are blocked (only down) is to be able to use the EVH drop tuna and to tune them easily in whatever tuning.
@@EugeValovirta230V This video about tuning made me think: do you like multi-tracking rhythms with the same guitar for a more "wall of sound" or do you like using different guitars so there are slight differences in tone for a more live sound?
Usually I have a slightly darker tone panned left and a slightly brighter tone panned right. Often I use the same guitar but different amps. I have been thinking about using different guitars for each side.
Thank you. :)
Hey Euge, is it possible to run 4 4x12 cabs from a Jcm 800? If so, how? If you could do a video about it, I would thank you, it would be cool. I ask you this because we always see 4 Marshall cabs behind the guitar player, in so many bands, since always. Thanks for the attention, brother, keep rocking!
Man that guitar is beautiful brother
🕺👌🎶
Loco!
I don’t know if you made already a video about this but any tips for mixing vocals?
Can’t remember but if I have it’s on my TUTORIALS - playlist 👌😎.
Great vid E! What's you're take on string gauges and choice of pickups, as you are using std. scale guitars (25ish inches) when tuning down lower than E flat? The regular scale and pickup (especially passive) combos are designed for std. tuning and still work ok when deviating a bit (say that Eb) from it, but going lower, you push their design boundaries.
Thanks! EMGs work always. Here you go:

Finally, a video that I really wanted to see, especially with the boss pedals, very good. But I would still like to know if you use it at 432Hz and if you do, would it be possible to show it too?
i rarely ever play in E its mostly the Arch Enemy C standard tuning, B standard, or Drop C...the most interesting tuning ive used is Open C Major like Devin Townsend from his Strapping Young Lad days
Been telling my wife that for 25 years, she smiles, but I know she's not really smilliing she's thinking , another fukn guitar!!!
😁👌
What the hell. I had the impression that Euge is drunk af in this video.
Then I realized, I still had youtube playback speed to 0.75 :D :D :D
By the way: E-flat standard crew represent!
😁
I change tunings alot
Yo Euge. If you can find one, I would love to know what you think about the DSM Humboldt Simplifier X or Deluxe. All analog 2 channel amp in a box.
I mostly played in C standard but lately, just because of the compositions, now I use lot of drop A#. And with that comes a lot of problems with the thickness of the strings. I still don't think I found the right ones.
I hear ya. I use these: www.eugevalovirta.com/gear/guitars-pickups-strings
How do you feel about extended range guitars?
Not my cup of tea.
What is your opinion on drop tuning pedals such as the Digitech The Drop?
what's about to one guitar + pitchshifter to RULE all tunings?
Interesting stuff! I've found that standard tuning likes alnico pickups. I'm currently using EMG 89-X and the XR variant in my LP. Have you ever tried the X-series or EMG 85 in bridge position?
Thanks! Yeah I have EMG 85 on the Pinky ESP. It was a bit too bright with 81 but with 85 it’s 👌.
Hey Euge. Any recommendations for string gauge if I tune my Les Paul down to D standard/drop C? It's currently in E standard with 10 gauge strings.
Hi Euge! What set of string do you use for lower tuning?
www.eugevalovirta.com/gear/guitars-pickups-strings
@@EugeValovirta230V Thanks! 😊
Wht is DADGAD in 7 string ? Tuning john browne uses .. can sm1 explain pls
The best advantage is you can justify buying just one more guitar. And a back up for each tuning.
👌😎

I know everyone loves it, but I'm not a big fan of downtuning. Metal bands nowadays tune down way too much and they do it without a good reason. They tune down by default because they think that makes their sound heavier. Which is a misconception and very lazy. Heaviness comes from writing good riffs and arrangements and playing with the right attitude. The lower you go, the more simplistic the music has to become, and you're forced to rely on power chords, octaves and single note lines exclusively. That's just the physics of it. For me E standard does it perfectly fine 95% of the time. I do D standard for slower, groovier songs that don't have many 16th notes in succession. I think that anything below D or C# changes the timbre of the electric guitar so much that it doesn't sound good anymore, and you run into issues with chord voicings. Especially with distortion. It also introduces problems with the bass guitar. The lower the notes get, the more suspect the intonation becomes and it becomes harder and harder to hear intervals correctly. There's a reason why you don't play trills on a tuba. It doesn't sound like a trill anymore - more like some kind of tremolo or tremor effect. There's also a reason why you don't write close harmony and block chords for low range instruments in an ensemble. Just doesn't work. There is a reason why instruments are tuned according to specific standards. The more you move away from that, the more you steer away from what we call a "harmonically sound arrangement" and the more it becomes a sonic effect, which unfortunately modern metal music has become far too reliant upon.
Yeah. Downtuning is what makes modern metal bad to me. It started with Pantera around their 3rd or 4th album when they were too heavy into turmoil and alcohol. It's as if they went lower to be heavier and more bad ass to compensate for their arrangements and hooks being not as good due to their infighting and boozing. They were far better in standard to drop D. I really won't listen to a band tuned below D# standard. Guitar is meant to be around D to E. It's guttural and ugly to go lower. If you want to play bass, play bass. Guitar is mid rangey instrument
I agree to a certain degree. Live I find anything lower than b difficult to make out. Obviously it sounds somewhat good on a studio recording, but those sounds have been polished to sound good. Live the dynamics are completely different though. So I'd say it's more an issue live. Tuning will never make up for good songwriting
A lot of the modern metal bands think downtuned = heavy. It does not.
Lower interval limits are a thing, but no way anything lower than C# sounds bad. Do you really think bands like Carcass, Crowbar, At The Gates, old In Flames sound bad?
@@ceaselessdischarge479 I do. Most of that stuff would have had way more punch and aggressiveness if the guitars were tuned higher. Except Crowbar, it does makes sense for them given the tempos and the overall aesthetic.
In your case, your various tunings are a pain in the ass for me 😂.I have one guitar and sometimes I try to keep up with you, but I can't... I'm in E and you jump from Eb to C#, then D, and finally dropA 😳. Likely not in one song. It's hard to do it having just one guitar.
If Drop C# was a tuning it would look like Euge
😁
you just convinced me to buy a better tuner... my snark only does full step or # tunings no flat id have to guess it with the red bars on the display
No need since for example Eb is the same than D#, Db = C# etc.
@@EugeValovirta230V awesome thanks for letting me know brother
@@EugeValovirta230V I love your work and sound and talent...best on UA-cam seriously
Why nobody tunes up? 😎
437mhz.... Drop D is 🤴...
I have a few songs in that tuning.
🤫🤐 don't tell anyone it's my secret tuning 🫡 Chris 7 ways.... 🤩
Lmao that is what I told the queen too. Gotta have em setup in all the different tunings. Still need two more guitars for e flat and one in c standard. Got d and c# covered and a# on the 7 so might need a few more guitars. Lol
@EugeValovirta230V 437mhz.... Drop D is 🤴... try it.....
