  • In this video I take you through the first steps of hand-binding a book. I begin by tearing down large sheets of paper, then folding them into signatures, piercing sewing holes, cutting the linen tapes, waxing the thread, and finally sewing the book block.
Subsequent videos will detail gluing the book block, backing, trimming and rounding, and casing in. Thank you for watching!

if its a one off book I'd recommend buying a handmade journal off eBay or Etsy instead, cheaper than the tools and supplies you'll need and you're supporting a small buisness, if its just for the experience though look for a local bookbinding class.

I took bookbinding as an elective in college when I was training to be a jeweler. The sounds of the paper folding and the feel of a bone folder running over the seam can't be beat! Easily one of my favorite hobbies. You're obviously incredibly skilled at what you do, and that's lovely to see!

I have been waiting 11 years to find an answer as to how to honor my father’s letters, journals, diaries, “snippets” as he called his jottings. All found in an old suitcase after he passed, unknown to his children. He was a craftsman, like Dennis, and as sad as it is that he is not alive to go on this journey with me, I am able to labor in love a book such as what Dennis is making, I am not alone. Right now I am going through each video while taking notes. My sewing/craft room is cleared out completely of distractions, as I begin this exciting adventure. I hope others will follow me with their thoughts, and Dennis has promised to be there for me also. I cannot thank you enough for that! Life is good!

My mother's an aspiring writer. Her works are truly incredible, but we're not financially ready enough to publish them officially. I really want her stories to be published in hardcopies, and it breaks my heart to see even though we all want it so bad we unfortunately need to have more patience. So until that happens, I want to do something really special for her. That's why I'm here, trying to learn bits and bobs from this wonderful craftsmanship through as many tutorials as I can. Once I'm bit more confident, I shall print her stories one by one at home, and bind the pages together and try my best for it to look lovely and strong. And I'll give it to her, hopefully on her birthday this year in May! Thank you for posting these detailed and absolutely magnificent videos and walk throughs, I'm learning so much and I'm looking forward to making the very first of my own! Have a beautiful day❤️❤️❤️

The fact that UA-cam (well, premium) has the option to slow down a video then I can pause it whenever I need to, in order to DO the step I am watching, I love it! Now I've been diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, and while the prognosis is good so far, I'm learning that there's really not enough time to dither about getting into things. Hi there, bit confused here sorry haha When you cut the large sheets into more manageable sizes you then fold them over but then after the 1st fold you turn them so that the fold is now at the top then fold them again. Doesn't that now leave you with a 2 layer page with a fold at the top? Sorry if I missed something I'm re-watching while I make a book following your videos.
    Thanks again! Stunning work!

In some of your other videos, you did this super cool thing where the explainy bits were in the subtitles. What are the odds we can get that again for this series?

I did enjoy watching this however I found it a bit frustrating as a lot of the time I couldn't see what you were doing as your hand was in the way. I hope you don't mind a little criticism of an otherwise very beautiful video.

I couldn’t agree more! This was filmed without retakes and so the shots I got were what went into the video, and it’s hard to keep the hands out of the way with such work. But I’m more conscious of the video quality now, and will work on my filming techniques. I’m glad you found some enjoyment in the final result!

How can anyone not like it, in such a beautiful video? It comes from those who don't know how to do the same, and they are envious. They are poor people 😪😒🙄
