I love these chaconnes & passacailles too. They usually are the finale of an act or the whole opera and accompany a ballet. Dance notation for some has survived & you can see what they looked like if you search here on UA-cam for "baroque dance chaconne."

Yes, i think Jean Philippe Rameau is the greatest french music composer. Lully, Charpentier was also great composers.
