I am 60 years old, have listened to and LOVED gospel music ALL my life! I was working late 2 nights ago, around 2:00 A.M. I saw this video and click on it because I have NEVER heard of this singer before. I CANNOT GET ENOUGH! I've been looking for and listening to her (and her daughter) ever since. Talented, graceful, and anointed...HOW DID I MISS HER?!?!?!? I am a soprano fanatic. I will never forget her, now!
These clips always touch me because Billy is obviously so at home in this setting. He goes waaaay back in Gospel Music History. He played on some of the classic tracks before he was an adult himself. I shudder everytime I think about his end. BLESS YOU, MR. PRESTON. And I loved Ms. Hurley too. Very much so.
"He promised to never leave me alone!" This arrangement will certainly help the mind to remember the promise in His word when faced with an unknown and bleak circumstance in life. And this was an ideal lead for Sister Dunklin-Hurley! Thank you Pastor Rodgers for the post!
Amazing How sweet the sound. I love this song. I attended St. James Missionary Baptist. Does any one remember that Donald Vails taught music at Martin Luther King High School in the seventy. This is so wonderful. GOD Bless!!!!!!!
I had the pleasure of being there live for Detroit Remembers Vol 1 Recording and she stood out..Her dignity, elegance, and charm just spoke volumes..and that smile as she sang FLAT FOOT...a songbird in her own right...would have loved to have seen her and Doris Sykes together on stage together...Min Rogers, do you have her on Volume 1?
Truly one of a kind, Hula was! Thanks for sharing! What she and Jimmy Dowell along with Bishop Woods does with "Jesus Will" on "Detroit Remembers" Vol 1 is truly something special!
My brothers Bless YOU ALL from New Zealand.... My sister and partner and i wish there were Churches for us to attend like this the island and Maori community embrace your soulful words you would have a huge fellowship in new zealand
Thanks, Jimmie, for this one, as well as many of the others. Hulah Gene is one of my favorite soloists from the Voices of Tabernacle era recordings. I have been trying for about five years to get the original album with this song on it (Rev. Charles Craig and the Tabernacle Chorale) released on CD. Jimmie, and all of you, let's wage a campaign to get it released.
Mr Muzic I really would like to visit her, .Where is she living and I suppose Mis Hula had grandchildren.Please replied thank you and may the God of heaven continue to bless you always.
I so remember them singing together, "just the two of us," or something like that. Hula had an awesome voice and presentation of the same. Such memories.
@bridallejohnson1729 I am so sorry that I am 9 years late on this response. But somewhere around the 1980s and 90s, as it was told to me by the late Herbert Pickard several years ago before he himself died, Carolyn began to experience some private Mental Health mental health concerns. She attended her mother's funeral. Hulah passed before Pee Wee. And I'm told, it was a difficult thing. I think even in present day 2024, Carolyne is still alive.
By the way, the subject album was recorded on Savoy, titled "Heaven". According to the late Bishop Craig, they were still under contract to HOB at the time, thus the "Tabernacle Chorale" name. A few years back, I found a used copy in mint condition in Boston, of all places. What an album!
1 I’ve seen the lightning flashing And heard the thunder roll, I’ve felt sin’s breakers dashing, which tried to conquer my soul; I’ve heard the voice of my Savior, He bid me still fight on: He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone. Refrain: No, never alone, No, never alone; He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone: No, never alone, No, never alone: He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone. 2 The world’s fierce winds are blowing- Temptation’s sharp and keen; I have a peace in knowing My Savior stands between; He stands to shield me from danger When all my friends are gone: He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone. [Refrain] 3 When in affliction’s valley I tread the road of care, My Savior helps me carry My cross so heavy to bear; Though all around me is darkness And earthly joys are flown, My Savior whispers His promise: Never to leave me alone. [Refrain] 4 He died on Calv'ry's mountain, For me they pierced His side, For me He opened that fountain, The crimson, cleansing tide; For me He’s waiting in glory Upon His heavenly throne: He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone. [Refrain]

I love this song.
Amen... as do I.
1 I’ve seen the lightning flashing
And heard the thunder roll,
I’ve felt sin’s breakers dashing,
which tried to conquer my soul;
I’ve heard the voice of my Savior,
He bid me still fight on:
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone.
Refrain:
No, never alone,
No, never alone;
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone:
No, never alone,
No, never alone:
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone.
2 The world’s fierce winds are blowing-
Temptation’s sharp and keen;
I have a peace in knowing
My Savior stands between;
He stands to shield me from danger
When all my friends are gone:
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone. [Refrain]
3 When in affliction’s valley
I tread the road of care,
My Savior helps me carry
My cross so heavy to bear;
Though all around me is darkness
And earthly joys are flown,
My Savior whispers His promise:
Never to leave me alone. [Refrain]
4 He died on Calv'ry's mountain,
For me they pierced His side,
For me He opened that fountain,
The crimson, cleansing tide;
For me He’s waiting in glory
Upon His heavenly throne:
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone. [Refrain]
Amen… one of my favorite songs

That couldn't possibly be Shirley Caesar's mother who had been dead many years when this event tooknplace.
She was a member of the Argo Singers. She's the soloist on "What Did He Say?" I don't know her name but she was a powerful alto.
I'm speaking of this one that you've loaded...is there a DVD for this one as well?
Is hula daughter still alive, Please respond thank you and God Bless..
