Maybe if phantoms start attacking bees and foxes when they don't "sleep". An insomnia potion could be cool for pvp. Maybe each level adds 3 more phantoms and it lasts 15 minutes or such. Then, they immediately get phantoms.
Before I watch the video, I’ll make a prediction/hypothesis of my own: Phantoms don’t only spawn when the player doesn’t sleep. Rather, they show up whenever the player DOES sleep, and has some sort of symbiotic relationship with them. Probably commensalism, as sleeping doesn’t seem to affect the player positively or negatively at all. The Phantoms somehow gain something from interacting with a sleeping player. Evidence that they do show up while the player is sleeping is that whenever you have a cat sleeping with you, it has a chance to bring you Phantom Membrane when you wake up. This implies that your cat hunted and killed a Phantom that approached you while you slept. The reason they begin to attack you after 3 days without sleeping is because they begin to get ‘hungry’ for whatever it is you provide them when you sleep(dreams, perhaps?). At first only the hungriest Phantoms come to try to collect from you, but every day you don’t sleep, more and more Phantoms run out of patience waiting for you to sleep on your own. If we aren’t assuming that enemies just ‘spawn’ and that’s just for gameplay purposes, perhaps Phantoms live somewhere high above the build limit? If they come down from way up in the atmosphere whenever you’re asleep, this would explain why they can’t just spawn in the Nether or the End whenever you’re there and haven’t slept for a while. This also may explain how they survive in the day with out burning. Maybe the exist outside of the Minecraft Earth’s atmosphere, and there aren’t enough particles to reflect the amount of sunlight needed to burn them. What do you guys think?
“We don’t know where undead mobs go during the day.” During the day, they spawn in dark places, like caves. So, during the day zombies, etc. Retreat to the caves. I think you could speculate that for phantoms except for the fact that they don’t spawn at all during the day, which I see as a gameplay mechanic decision and not as lore.
There was a comment I saw that said that phantoms spawn DURING sleep, because a cat will bring you a phantom membrane after waking up. It's like they gain something from you sleeping, but when you don't give them that they will go after you.
I love how Minecraft is similar to SCP in a way when it comes to "lore", there isn't really much true base lore. The players/writers create their own lore as they see fit, and that's okay.
@@user-cg2hb3ye9v I think even 1.20 is far too soon for "complete" lore. That's just two updates away (not counting 1.17 because we of course already know what 1.17 is). More like 1.50.
The Phantom is the Minecraft equivalent of SCP-966 (The sleep killer), an invisible creature that prevents their prey from sleeping by emitting a wave until their prey succumbs to insomnia. I actually suggested a Death Battle between the two (personally, I think the phantom would win due to it's speed, flight, and bite force).
@@RetroGamingNow Ik u probably wont see this but I noticed that phantoms also have super green eyes so they may have something to do with experience or emeralds
It's interesting to note, the phantoms have an anatomy like that of a manta ray. Maybe the original animal was similar, sleeping and swimming in the oceans during the day.
Based on their physiology and appearance, I would NOT call the Phantoms “birds”. Rather more like rays. (I actually thought they were supposed to be water-borne mobs when they were introduced in Update Aquatic.)
I have an idea! During the day, Phantoms go high into the atmosphere where it's colder so they don't burn and skeletons go deep down being unable to swim while zombies go to water thinking they're safe but since they can't swim they turn into drowned. Just a quick idea that popped into mind!
About the elytra thing with phantom membranes being used to repair elytra, phantoms used to live in the end. This could be a connection, but probably is just game design because that was just in the snapshots and they changed it.
and when they came to the overworld they zombified maybe the builders that became enderman hunted them or took there food the chorus fruit maybe in the end they where peaceful the phantoms were able to teleport like the endearmen since they’re diet was entirely chorus fruit wich is how they came to the overworld
@@RetroGamingNow i think that since both have wings, it makes sense that the membranes will help repair the wings of an elytra, since the phantoms also have wings, that may also wear off and membranes are a general durability saver for wings.
I have a theory and it might be a stretch but hear me out: Phantoms came from the end and were affiliated with shulkers. Think about it, shulkers guarded the end cities and enderman couldn’t fight them and neither could the shulkers, so there was a 3 way alliance, the phantoms, who could go thousands of blocks and search for loot, enderman, who could make them more reliable and more effective long distance, as seen with them hunting for players that don’t sleep. I suspect the players that don’t sleep are hunted down solely for their infection, not because it was a magically inherited trait. The phantoms must come from the outer outer space in the end, as elytra must’ve been something that could be crafted by them,. I also think the end city ships were ships that could go very fast in the air, and they were used to travel where the phantoms were leading them to. This might be a stretch also but what if the enderman accessed the end through multiple portals at different locations? There’s strongholds everywhere and it makes me think that all but one portal was destroyed, and there is a 1,000 block distance from the end islands to the main site. I think in general phantoms came from the end but then after the builders got trapped they found their way to the overworld and got infected, and then hunted for their prey at night, it’s also weird that foxes sleep under the shade, which means that they could be aware of the phantoms existence. I think this is because phantoms can’t really attack animals under low blocks, as they get stuck.
Aside from the evidence against a hallucination with cats and drops, other players can also see your phantoms, so they cannot be your own hallucination
I tend to think of them has beings capable of traveling dimensions that no other mobs can because then that could explain why you never see them unless your tired
It’s very clearly not a bat. And if it was a lizard it wouldn’t be able to fly unless it’s some dragon variant. Do you mean it must be a reptile or mammal?
Its flight behavior is unlike any real-world creature, and kind of reminds me of how the Ender Dragon used to attack. So maybe the dragon idea isn't that far off.
I find the word "phantom" interesting. It suggests that in contrast to the other undead mobs, the Phantom is a ghost. So I believe it may have been some horrible creation, combining the soul (ghost) and a pile of bones, to make a creature that hunts down week beings to pick them off.
Eventually The End dialogue will be mentioned in this series, and I feel like the Phantoms could somehow be tied to that, since the two beings speaking mention dreaming and sleep, and then at the end of the dialogue say "wake up". Then again I'm not really sure how strongly connected it would be with just the sleep factor.
The End poem was made to be "silly over-the-top out-of-nowhere text" acording to the wiki which makes it dubious for theory crafting outside of the poem itself
hey can you make a deep dive on ghasts. I know you kinda talked about them in the iceberg video but i would love to listen to you talking about their backstories. keep up the good work.
@@jobee589 actually there is a lore. Ghasts were somehow abandoned in the nether for a long time. They originally live in the overworld. And if you save them from the nether with a big nether portal and fishing them through it, they can go through and when you kill it in the overworld it would give you an achievement.
maybe ghasts were magma cubes that died on soul sand. the trapped souls in the soul sand absorbed the magma cream, causing them to have a corporeal body. their ability to shoot fire also makes sense - as magma cubes have lava or magma inside their bodies. this is probably cringe but it's what I see fit lol
thats not bad at all , maybe they are in deed mechanical like guardians , and maybe they are a experiment frankenstein like , why not really? im not looking for a ultimate theory , the more theoryes the better and i like to know them all
Maybe a evoker ruler made vexes and then died from the player so the vexes merged into a greater threat (aka the phantom) to kill thr player on the aniversy of the evokers death at the dame time he died which explains why they dont attack if the player has slept because the event is skipped. My theory
See my theory actually includes the snapshot and pre-release content as part of my theory. The Enderman had green eyes in the pre-release, but then their eyes became purple. The Ender Dragon has purples eyes as well, I take this as evidence of the Ender Dragon's corruption or influence. The Phantoms all have green eyes, and they were able to spawn in the End back in their first appearance in Snapshot 18w07a. I think this is a sign they both came from the End, that End creatures for the most part had green eyes, and that when the Ender Dragon showed up it started to influence the Endermen, so the Phantoms (being actually more intelligent than we might think at first) united from across the End to escape the dimension before the Ender Dragon could close the portal between the Overworld and the End. The Piglins and Zoglins transform into zombies due to exposure to the airborne zombie plague when they cross over, so the same could've happened to the entire Phantom race when they did. This leaves thousands or millions of undead Phantoms roaming the Overworld, and none in the End since they all fled before the Ender Dragon could make the Phantoms part of their domain. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
@@Azarilh I mean it's all head canon and theory anyway, by that logic every theory we make needs not be done because any piece of our evidence could be switched out in the next update.
@@WWalton1996 Usually they don't change the lore with official versions. Snapshots are not official and most of the times they use "placeholders" like endermen that dropped diamonds instead of pearls. So, will you add that to the game's lore?
Dogs are physical protectors, while cats are spiritual protectors. Phantoms are spiritual apparations feeding on the unrest of your mind after not sleeping. They are invisible to the other mobs. Cats are the only mobs who can sense the spiritual threat, and they can protect you from it. For all the people commenting that creepers are also scared of cats, I believe it was to give cats a purpose before phantoms were added in. It is probably a gameplay feature and not related to the story
I like to think the reason they're undead is that they're vampiric beings, and are naturally undead as a result. This would explain their condition of spawning at night and burning during the day, as well as their bat like appearance.
what if the reason there are no live phantoms is because they've been hunted to extinction by the precursor builders after they realized they could make foolproof wings out of the phantoms' parts? That could explain why there seems to be an endless amount of elytras the player can find.
i feel like the elytra could still come from the phantoms, considering it is only found in an item frame which requires stick and wool which only come from the overworld

Congratulations retro! I found you from the iceberg video and have been watching your great content ever since! Why are phantoms so buffed in bedrock though?
I have a good info about the phantom Phantom was actually planned to be a end mob but their presence made the end boss fight harder so they made it become a overworld mob and they was once living but when they were added they were changed into a undead mob
@@Silvermoonmaker I don't know I'm a bedrock player and I love phantoms I made a farm that I will just be afk standing at a specific spot and then when phantoms spawn my farm will work
Not sure how this plays into the phantom theories, but I think you should look at thunderstorms and lightning as part of the "cataclysmic event" that made the ancient builders undead. Not a direct cause, but possibly a leftover side effect of whatever happened. Lightning can change a villager into a witch, a pig into a zombified piglin, and can spawn undead horses and skeletons. Also, the drowned can spawn with tridents which can be enchanted with channeling, harnessing this power in a portable form. Ancient inhabitants still using their weapons that helped create the cataclysm perhaps?
Considering that the word "phantom" means ghost or apparition, I have another theory. What if phantoms are truly some sort of ghosts or maybe spirits, which are invisible and intangible during the day but when the night falls they manifest physically? First of all, ghosts are often considered hallucinations. And sleep deprivation is definetely the most certain way to hallucinate. So, phantoms' spawn condition can be simply a reference to debates whether ghosts are real or people just see things. Secondly, in many cultures cats were described to have supernatural powers and abilities. Including being able to see ghosts. And cats in Minecraft react to phantoms. Thirdly, ghosts are considered to be a manifestation of someone's soul. And many things in Minecraft are related to souls. We have soul sand and soul soil in the Nether. We have wardens who contain souls in their chests. Minecraft Dungeons have a lot of soul-related items and skills. So what if phantoms are corrupted physical manifestations of dead souls? We already have similar ghostly mob, the vex. But vexes are artificial and created by the summoners unlike phantoms, which spawn by themselves (with some help of players' insomnia). Furthermore, vexes can sense or see players through the walls, as they can fly through opaque and tangible blocks. What if phantoms have similar power to sence players but in much bigger radius? Btw, many monsters need darkness to manifest in the Overworld. But phantoms also need somebody's insomnia. Who knows, maybe phantoms come from some sort of dream world. Steve/Alex sleeps and regains his/her strength and energy by taking them from the dream world. The same energy, which would make phantoms escape from there to the physical world. But when the player doesn't sleep, no energy is drained from dream world and phantoms materialize in the real one. Here comes another theory that phantoms might not be ghosts but actually evil spirits similar to spirits of nature or natural disasters. But due to the fact that phantoms are categorized as undead, I stick to the first theory about physical manifestations of corrupted dead souls, which are hungry for fresh living human flesh. Maaaan, I wish this was the topic of my dissertation, not some human rights stuff...
I was playing Minecraft a few days ago when my friend spawned a wither. I play with subtitles on, and noticed that it says “wither released.” This could be another point to back up your theory about soul sand.
With the phantoms. Have you considered the old primer model from there introduction to the Minecraft community as the living version of the phantom? Wonder why the developers changed the design in the first place.
My theory, phantoms are shulkers that are grown up, shulkers are in the form of the baby in their chrysalis just like bugs, they have a hard shell to protect them from attacks until they grow up. Phantoms are the dead versions of the live phantoms that live in the end. We don't see live phantoms in the end because they either live low under the islands or they live high above the islands. Here's another reason why I think phantoms are the dead versions of the live phantoms that were once shulkers, the shulkers projectiles. The Shulkers projectiles when hitting a mob makes the mob float, this is a self defense mechanic that shulkers use when they are a baby, and have no form of attack. The projectile also leaves a trail of what seems to be some kind of smoke or dots, similar to the phantoms trails when they fly. This doesn't explain why phantoms attack players or why they spawn in the conditions they do but this is just a theory I came up with, also love and support to RetroGamingNow for making this video.
The phantom as a concept was always interesting. It's just the execution is very annoying, and that takes away the scare factor it's trying to give. Also, Phantoms just find you by not sleeping. You can sleep and then spawn in a phantom using commands or creative mode and they'll still attack you, it is just the locating part that's linked to sleep.
Honestly I think they're the ones talking in the end poem. They even state at one point they're sometimes called aliens, ghosts, angels, and green men by the players.
It was stated somewhere that entities and objects in Minecraft are named in the same way a random traveler or discoverer would name them upon first contact. Which is why there are some basic names (like Zombie, Skeleton) and more complex ones (Ghast, Piglin, Ender-anything). Phantoms appear to the player in the darkness of night, release some weird particles during flying and their spawn condition is somewhat related to the fatigue caused by sleep deprivation which prevents human's brain from thinking straight and possibly makes them seriously believe in ghosts and stuff. Which is why Phantom was chosen as a name. But that's just my guess.
could you do a deep dive on the piglin and hoglin? , they have always fascinated me with their unique behaviours and attributes, especially when they're in the overworld, where both of them turn in to zombified version of themselves, which is, imo, really intriguing and might indicate some lores/connections to how the undead came to be in the overworld
My theor is that there's only one world. Each player comes in at a different point in time unless they come in together. All of the undead builders are actually former players who stagnated and gave up m on their works
I like to think that all Minecraft worlds exist as a parallel multiverse. Course, there's a LOT of junk worlds out there, but also some remarkable ones too. Either all the builders and history were a common thread, or maybe part of a prime universe before splitting
Im still confused on the anatomy of the phantom. It just seems so otherworldly. They have wings and a tail that resembles a manta ray but they don't have feet. Does this mean they fly all the time with no rest? It's just so hella confusing. I think you missed on explaining that.
Another theory: phantoms are evolved bats, and they have heightened senses that enabled them to sense insomnia in humans. The phantoms might smell pheromones of insomnia that nothing else can, they use the weakness of humans for prey, similar to vultures. It might look like I’m explaining things more twice, but I’m not. I’m trying to make my typing very grammatical.
my headcannon form where the zombies and skeletons come from during the night, it's the caves. When it's day time the undead go back to the caves. Some are undead ancient builders, others were created by the mob spawner and spread trough the caves. Also, mob spawner video please, I would love to see a canon explanation on how it works.
*Almost* Every house; there's a decent amount of houses in a village that *don't* have beds so theoretically that factor limits the village's overall population
Side theory, phantoms never attack villagers because they are under feline protection, that's why there are so many stray cats wandering around in every village. When a cat sits down on your bed, it's not sleeping on you, it's guarding you, and the gifts they bring you every morning are the haul from their nightly hunts, willingly becoming insomniacs just to lure out the phantom menace and destroy them

I had a thought that the phantoms could be (at least one of) the creatures that make up the giant underground skeletons (I'd imagine one of the ribcages) while no natural phantoms are that big they are one of three mobs (slimes, magma cubes and phantoms) that can be spawned with different sizes via commands. Haven't had the time to properly compare there bodies to the fossils but I do feel this could work as really what else could those fossils be. (And yes I am aware that even then there are some fossils that clearly aren't and even some in the nether but still it's certainly food for thought) Also yes I get command exclusives are odd to argue to be cannon but really the only possibilities we know of that could be those fossils are giants, big phantoms (both command exclusives) and dragons of which we only see one in a completely different dimension.
I think that just because they did in snapshot versions doesn't mean that we can consider that for the lore as the game is now
and when they came to the overworld they zombified maybe the builders that became enderman hunted them or took there food the chorus fruit maybe in the end they where peaceful the phantoms were able to teleport like the endearmen since they’re diet was entirely chorus fruit wich is how they came to the overworld
@@RetroGamingNow you used to be able to use leather to repair the elytra as well....

Due to the bones we can see and the membrane... I think the Phantom is either a Bat or a Lizard, not a Bird
It’s very clearly not a bat. And if it was a lizard it wouldn’t be able to fly unless it’s some dragon variant. Do you mean it must be a reptile or mammal?
@@pulatelephonics I probably meant that, yup.
That makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, it would be a really hard topic, since there isn't much lore around the ghast but I think it could be fun.
@@jobee589 actually there is a lore. Ghasts were somehow abandoned in the nether for a long time. They originally live in the overworld. And if you save them from the nether with a big nether portal and fishing them through it, they can go through and when you kill it in the overworld it would give you an achievement.
Do you understand what I said?

Maybe they wiped themselves out with experiments or war involving lightning?
It's already been stated that the pig - > zomb Piglin isn't lore friendly but an Easter egg

With the phantoms. Have you considered the old primer model from there introduction to the Minecraft community as the living version of the phantom? Wonder why the developers changed the design in the first place.
Make a piglin theory, i loved this one!
First I was thinking that you're actually hurting yourself in a hallucinational state
But then I learned the cat one
i love how even something as scary as a Phantom can be bested by a cat, natures purrfect hunter.
6:56 I love how its this deep, intriguing, intellectual dive into game lore, and then there's a random meme reference.
Are we going to ignore the word phantom? It means ghost, which might have something to do with the lore
Honestly I think they're the ones talking in the end poem. They even state at one point they're sometimes called aliens, ghosts, angels, and green men by the players.
Perhaps phantoms are possessed?
Phantoms are actually just your parents telling you to sleep.
Lol
Imagine if a hoard of phantoms enter your nether portal

What I meant by mutated is the zombification mutated them genetically, causing their offsprings to mutate and eat the inferior bats.
