- I don´t know why, but I love last twenty minutes of Puccini´s La fanciulla. There is few beatifull moments like this aria (and also recitative "Per lei...") or whole scene of Minnie. I understand why Domingo loves this opera... :)
I agree esclarmonde, it was one of the most beautiful, rich and even tenor sounds from top to bottom. I have no explanation for his fears, except that somewhere along the way someone planted a seed of doubt in his head and he never got rid of it. He is also one of the nicest and most approachable people I have ever met in this profession.
una voz preciosa un color divino , te llega al alma-
I had the great pleasure to met this wonderful personality this year. Your words are completely right!
I saw and heard Jaime Aragall live in "Tosca" in the late 80s. His Cavaradossi was wonderful. He sang an encore on "E lucevan le stelle" and received a standing ovation.
he was the cavaradossi in Tosca for my 1st ever time at the opera, and i've been hooked ever since. Saw him in Tosca again in the 80s with Kabaivanska and Milnes, had to go to every performance : a stage cast like this can only be dreamt of...
As to compaisons, I've been lucky to see on stage Vickers, Carreras, Domingo - I exclude Pavarotti as it was only for the 3 tenors extravaganza in Paris- they all gave me memories i will keep in my ears for the rest of my life and cherish.
I love all Puccini, but Fancilla is my favorite score of his. Highly under rated and under performed!
MARAVILLOSO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well said!... and then back to a Baritone, What a career! and despite some Criticism he reached the pinical of his career and stays there, achieving what a select few do in the opera world, enjoying what he does and bringing enjoyment to others.
I love his voice, but remember him from Munich and the absolute FEAR he had of going on stage. Look at his face at the end of this aria. He was constantly in doubt, of himself as a singer, as an actor. And yet when he opened his mouth, this beautiful, rich and warm tone came pouring out. He just wouldn't believe it.
He ranks above Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras and they all agree. The most beautiful tenor you will ever hear.
que hermoza voz.................
@corelli2 His doubts were unfouded, he was the finest singer/actor we have ever heard.
@ashbyjay The most beautiful voice of the 20th century.
@heasmans Alagna was a five year tenor, when I first heard him at Antibes, I thought at last another tenor. He squandered his voice by singing roles too soon and outside his repertoire.
@Redboy4 Yes I have heard him talk of his desire to have the voice of Aragall. Carreras said that if only he had recorded more often "The Three Tenors" would be in the second division!
@libro07 Pavarotti himself stated in an interview that in his opinion, Aragall was the better of them all (Domingo, Carreras, Pavarotti).

@libro07 Pav would (and did) agree with you there actually. He said as much in an interview that I believe is uploaded on here somewhere. He, Pavarotti, said something like "he was probably the best of us" in reference to Aragall, speaking of himself, Domingo, and Aragall.
Domingo is a baritone and how people can listen to the pushed notes , surprises me. As you say , he recorded everything offered but with his marking and baritonal voice ,he has debased opera.
A superb tenor, I wish he had replaced Domingo in most of his studio recordings.
Very nice. Last high note sounded a bit tight but otherwise he's on good form, shame he wasn't more recognized (or more consistent?)
Beczala ...
@esclarmonde1 Is that Alagna's problem?
Yes you can Domingo is a baritone and Aragall the finest tenor
hey victor no one asked why you like fanciulla but thanks
Lol, no subtle Alagna hint here?
Domingo is and always has been a baritone. He pushes his voice to try and attempt tenor roles and transposes the notes down .
Golifion l
Yes, Jan Peerce knew a few things about producing ugly notes...
Yes...Domingo is a baritone...but he successfully became a tenor!!!
He sings for so long because as a baritone he places no strain on his voice and because his recordings are transposed down.
What a pity this was never commercially recorded. I have tried to avoid this opera because of Domingo but as Giacomo did not feel comfortable singing dramatic roles, I feel that as he retired with an intact voice he should have been more adventurous.
Moving beauty from a truly great tenor, sadly neglected.
The world preferred Carreras and Domingo instead of Aragall and Kraus. Bad choice,if you not think of the glorious seventies. But later the choice is obvious.
I personally find this voice a little on the light side to sing this role. I believe that Dick Johnson requires at least Spinto voice-I actually prefer a dramatic in this role-and Aragall is not quite up to the task.
Of course they do, it is not a natural sound for a man to make.If tenors sing outside their particular tessitura their voices become strained and coarse. Many tenors are sensible and sing within their range , whether it be lyric, spinto, drammatico etc.Others do not and retire with damaged vocal chords and others simply refuse to give up and are publically booed.
